Very satisfied with the level of service. The contractor arrived on time and performed the job efficiently. He made a couple of recommendations to help improve my plumbing issues. I took those suggestions and had him install them. Things are working better than before. I will definitely call on 1st Home Pro Services again if I ever need other plumbing work. Great Job!

Plumbing work is generally expensive. But the guy was honest at saying what happened and fixed the problem, even if in an unconventional way.

I had a great experience working with REMA Plumbing today. He was responsive over Thumback, quoted us a fair price, and arrived right on time. Plus having availability on a Sunday was especially convenient. We were able to combine two projects and cover all of our plumbing needs in less than 90 minutes. I would definitely reach out to REMA again for future plumbing needs. Great combination of responsiveness, quality, and value.

Donte demo'ed a house of mine. He was very professional. Called and confirmed every appointment. Had the best price by far of any bids I received. He actually gave me the bid on a Friday, and the house was completely demo'ed by Tuesday. Very impressive. Work was great! I will use him again on my future projects!

Josh was great. Knew exactly what he was doing and managed to do a fairly complicated plumbing job on some very old pipes and parts without any complications. He's the kind of guy you can trust to get it done right without any nonsense. Highly recommended.

AMAZING SERVICE !!! He has a customer for life !! This guy was able to fix an issue that these so called big plumbing companies ( like Roto Rooter, Marines Plumbing) could not fix. First he came on a Sunday, inspite of him not working that day - then when he came - he took his time to evaluate the issue first and then initiated the fix. He charged 1/3rd of what they other big companies charged me ( and couldnt fix the problem). I have him coming back to for other plumbing issues aswell now- He is an honest guy with exceptional service !! Thank you ! Dont waste your time calling the big companies and wasting your money. This guy does way better work and at a fair price !

I had an appointment that required adjusting at the last minute. Lee was flexible and accommodating. He was in my home for approximately 30 minutes replacing and testing my garbage disposal and ensuring that the dishwasher drained properly. He provided sound advice and instructions for my new disposal and left me feeling confident of the work done. I appreciate how quickly and professionally he worked. Highly recommend Lee for meeting you plumbing challenges.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What are plumbers and what do they do?

Plumbers are skilled professionals who are trained to install and maintain pipes and systems for drinking water, sewage and drainage. They usually have trained through four- to five-year training programs, which include apprenticeships, via trade schools and community colleges. Plumbers’ areas of expertise typically go beyond pipes to include mathematics, blueprint reading, plumbing codes and water distribution. They handle plumbing emergencies, such as broken pipes or clogged drains, and install and maintain everything from a new piping system to a replacement faucet. Plumbers also know how to install bathtubs and showers, toilets, water heaters and dishwashers. Plumbers may work on residential or commercial sites, sometimes designing and laying out a pipe system during construction.

How long is a water heater supposed to last?

Your water heater is an essential part of your home, heating water for showers, dishwashing, laundry and more. On average, a traditional water heater will last 8-12 years. The general consensus is that it’s better to replace your water heater with a new one than to repair one that’s 10 years old or more. Older models are less energy-efficient and thus more costly to run than newer models with better technology. Here are some indicators of when it may be time to replace an old water heater instead of repairing it:

  • Leaks: If leaking is not caused by loose connections, the water may be seeping out through slight fractures in the metal of the tank that have formed over time.
  • Strange noises: Clanking, rumbling and other noises can mean that sediment has formed on the base of your tank, contributing to fissures leaks, and inefficiency.
  • Age: If it’s more than 10 years old, it’s probably time to replace.
  • Discolored or rusty water: Have a pro check it out; if the problem isn’t resolved by draining and cleaning, you’ll want to replace the heater.
  • Lack of hot water: Inconsistent heating and hot water supply that runs out too quickly likely means it’s time for a new unit.

Why is the water in my house not getting hot?

If the water in your house is not getting hot, it may be time for water heater repair. Nationally, the average water heater repair cost ranges between $120 and $200, although prices can range up to $400, depending on the problem and materials. Competent homeowners may also be able to try DIY fixes, whether they have a traditional gas or electric water heater or a tankless gas or electric heater. Troubleshooting the different issues that can arise with each of the styles requires some knowledge of how they operate and what red flags to look out for. For a natural gas water heater, the first step is to check whether the pilot light has gone out. It’s important to follow the manufacturer’s directions if you want to relight it yourself. If you smell gas, stop everything and call your gas company — the smell could signal a dangerous gas leak. If your household’s water is not getting hot enough, you can try increasing the temperature on the water heater’s front dial above the standard setting of 120 degrees; for safety, always turn off electricity to the unit before adjusting temperatures. If you keep running out of hot water, your household may simply need a higher-capacity water heater, so consider upgrading. Quick professional fixes include replacing the thermostat or heating elements and cleaning and repairing the thermocouple.

How much does it cost to install a hot water heater?

You’ll know when it’s time to install a new water heater. Water heater installation costs average between $360 and $780 nationally, with rates increasing depending on the project. The total project cost will be higher when you include the cost of the heater itself. Select your new water heater based on the number of occupants in your home and the number of gallons of capacity you’ll need. Installation costs can vary based on the type of water heater you are removing and the type you are installing, any necessary repairs, regional cost of labor, and whether disposal of the old heater is included. Natural gas water heaters retail on average between $650 and $900 for standard models. Electric water heaters range between $300 and $700 for standard models. Tankless electric water heaters retail on average between $250 and $700 for standard models. Tankless gas water heaters retail on average between $200 and $1,300.

A company may charge approximately $1,000 to replace a 50-gallon tank-style electric water heater (not including any upgrades required by building codes). Replacing a gas-powered water heater might cost $1,100 (not including code upgrades). Some companies roll the disposal of an old heater into the overall cost of the new water heater installation. Other professionals charge an additional removal fee that can range from $35 to $150.

How do you find a good plumber?

Whether you need a plumber to perform drain repair, install a new fixture, or replace rusty pipes, you need to make sure you hire someone reliable who will finish your job on time and within budget. Start by asking the plumbers on your short list these questions:

  • What is the total cost? Make sure your estimate includes materials and labor. Find out whether the plumber will be providing the materials and whether you’re being charged an hourly rate (which is variable) or a flat fee.
  • Is removal and cleanup included in the job? Some plumbers leave behind old parts, while others include the cleanup in the cost.
  • Is the work guaranteed? Find out whether the work (as well as the parts or fixtures) are guaranteed under a warranty.
