Mercedes Jo Events was everything we could ask for in a caterer. She and her team delivered on-time a fantastic meal for a family gathering. The food was abundant and beautiful. Perfectly prepared and seasoned. All of our expectations were exceeded. The process of working with Mercedes to pick from her extensive menu was was seemless. We will not hesitate to recommend MJEvents to friends and will no doubt return again when we need a caterer. Fabulous. Thank you!

On a whim, I decided to use Thumbtack to find a caterer for my mom's 72nd birthday party. OMG. I am SOOOO glad that I did!! I have planned a number of parties in my day, and I have yet to find one with such great professionalism and wonderful customer service I experienced with AC Catering. First off, they can fix just about anything!! While I had a basic menu in mind, I was forced to rethink things based on the wide variety of options presented by AC Catering. Other caterers wanted me to come up with the menu initially without giving me an idea of their speciality items. With AC Catering, you can get ANYTHING from breakfast, lunch, dinner..including smoked pit grilled items. So, I contacted them with my initial thoughts for a menu. Within 2 days, I received a proposal from the owner, George. Pricing was perfect, even with delivery. Additionally, they provide utensils, plates, condiments, etc. I was pleased. I had to make a last minute change. George was able to accommodate my request with no hassle. I called him just to make sure this change wouldn't pose a problem. He said "No worries. I got you." And, he wasn't kidding. So, party day comes. I'm a bit nervous because I never tasted the food or visited his brick and mortar store. However, the previous reviews from Thumbtack customers were all stellar. After meeting George in person, I totally understand why the reviews are so stellar. George is extremely pleasant and engaging. He arrived on time and was totally prepared to set up everything. He shared some jokes with my brother. Gave compliments to the birthday girl. He even shared the history about his family business. This party was for 50+ people. So, everything had to be right. Let me just say that George and his team didn't disappoint! The greens (with smoked turkey), baked beans and rice were EXCELLENT. I've eaten a lot of rice in my day. But, can I tell you how fabulous the yellow rice is? Very delicious. For meats, I ordered bbq chicken and burgers. Again, everything was wonderful. You would think burgers would just be bland and lacking flavor. NOT AC Catering burgers. They were thick, juicy, and seasoned well. More than enough food was provided. In fact, I had to encourage guests to take home plates of food. The deviled eggs were tasty. However, they were a bit messy due to lots of filling. But, it was totally fine. My guests put the smash on them. All throughout the event, everyone had positive comments and asked "who catered the food?" I didn't hesitate to tell them about George and AC Catering. I HIGHLY recommend them. In fact, I'm trying to find another excuse to celebrate so I can utilize them again!! Thank you, George, for making my mom's birthday so great. You will be hearing from me again. May your catering business continue to grow. God Bless you and your family.

MK Catering was the caterer I chose to execute my Wedding Reception in July 9, 2011. They did an excellent job with the décor and food. I hear people talking about my Wedding Reception until today. The menu they suggested was great and the food was delicious. Not to talk about their décor, amazing. I was very happy with MK Catering. They delivered everything I asked for as far as food and décor goes. I could not have chosen another caterer to do my Wedding Reception. Every time I remember how perfect everything was, my eyes are filled with tears. I am very appreciative for all of your help and for delivering such memorable moment. Thank you very much! I was tasked with planning a last minute holiday party for my Coast Guard Headquarters office and assumed I would be scrambling to find a caterer. Luckily I came across Thumbtack, which put me in touch with Tortoise & Hare. Tortoise & Hare provided me with a wide variety of options that were all within my price range, which was greatly appreciated since my budget was limited. I spoke with Katie to make our arrangement, and she allowed me to keep it open ended while I finalized our headcount and menu selections. Katie also provided me the security information to get the caterers onto base, which I assume is an unusual request. Erik handled the set up the day of the event, and he arrived early and made sure everything was in order before departing. The food was good and there was more than enough to go around. We were even able to hook up the base facilities team with lunch. Overall it was a pleasure to work with Tortoise & Hare, and I would strongly recommend them to anyone looking to cater an event.

I highly recommend Shore is Delicious, Catering by Teresa. I contracted with Teresa to cater an after (Wedding) reception party at my house in Gambrills. Teresa was extremely helpful in helping me decide what menu would be appropriate, providing suggestions and alternatives during the planning process. Teresa was very easy to get a hold of when needed, and responded with the answers to my questions very quickly. A majority of the food that Teresa served to my 65 guests was hand made, and it was absolutely delicious! Teresa's cooking skills and ability to create a balanced menu were impressive. Teresa and her crew were on time, and had the area set-up and ready to go by the time my guests started to arrive after the wedding reception. She went out of her way by providing tasteful table coverings and center pieces, even thought I did not ask for those. The quality of her work was excellent! Aside from the delicious food, the most impressive attribute of Teresa's catering service was their willingness to provide the "Complete Service." Teresa prepared all of the food, delivered it, served it and stayed until the end, making sure that the area was 100% clean and in order before she left. In addition, Teresa brought along a crew of helpers that provided anything that was needed to ensure that my guests had a good time. When researching for caterers, this was tough to find. Most wanted to make the food, put it on the tables and go. Not Teresa. In closing, I highly recommend and without reservation Shore is Delicious, Catering by Teresa for anyone's catered event. The planning, preparation and care taken by Teresa and her crew was fabulous. Tom Doyle

PHG personnel where very professional and helpful from the get go. Candi, who set up the reservation for us, was understanding and very helpful to meeting our needs. The delivery was punctual. The food was great and everyone at the office party enjoyed the meal with complements that a great caterer was selected and a job well done. I wasn't to thank the PHG team for their service to DC Water and look forward to more opportunities with PHG. God bless PHG and may He grow their company beyond borders in Jesus name, amen.

I cannot recommend Sandra highly enough. She was such a pleasure to work with all through the process of planning a brunch to celebrate our children's baptism. She talked through the menu and the schedule with us well in advance and kept in touch as she pulled all the pieces together. Her food was beautiful and absolutely delicious. And, she was attentive to every detail. She brought tablecloths and accents to match the colors of our kids' outfits and arranged beautiful flower arrangements to help decorate the house. She was cheerful and clearly invested in making sure we had a beautiful event. We have found our event caterer and look forward to working with Sandra again in the future!

Hi Michelle, Everything was excellent! I could not have asked for anything better. My parents were surprised which was a plus. All the guests complimented the place and food. During dinner people were talking about how good the food was and some were even sharing with one another to try their food. Everyone loved the cake. A lot of people asked me where did I get it and of course I said at Two Rivers. I said they have a bakery department. Even one guest was not going to have any until her husband said how good it was and she took a VERY small sample and then had a slice. Nick and Joy were excellent, especially Nick. He provided excellent customer service, had a good rapport talking with the guests to see if they needed anything. I called my mom to get her take on last night and she said the food was wonderful and the service was exceptional. She said everyone felt comfortable with the way the tables were set up and the chimney gave the appearance like they were in a private room. The area was nice because you could not hear the noise from the restaurant being back there. She said she felt like spending the evening there. She said some of the guest had not been there and said it was worth coming back. Thank you too for all your assistance with menu selection and answering any of my questions. A fun evening was had by all! Most of the guests stayed until the end which speaks volumes. Everyone had a great evening! Thank you, Kristen Dieso

We had non traditional, small wedding on a private community beach. It was a crab feast but in addition we wanted to have picnic style food. Everyone complimented on how good the food was and the caterers were very accommodating. It was a buffer style and we, the bride and groom were brought our plates of food and the caterer came over and offered to cut our wedding cake for our guests. The price was very reasonable for the variety of foods and the quality.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

Do you tip a wedding caterer?

Tipping 15 percent to 20 percent on a $3,000 catering bill can feel daunting — especially in light of all the other costs of throwing a wedding — but tipping your wedding caterer is standard practice. Be sure to ask your caterer about their specific policies. Many catering companies include gratuity as a line item on their bill. If tipping is not automatically included in your total, a good approach is to tip all the people involved the day of the event rather than paying one lump sum to the catering company. For each server and bartender, you can tip $20-$50, depending on how long they were onsite and whether they did exceptional work. You can also tip the chef; experts suggest $50. It’s also a good idea to tip the catering manager, the point-of-contact person who keeps the catering service running smoothly the day of your wedding, ensures all the food looks beautiful and is plentiful, and resolves any mishaps. Industry pros recommend tipping the catering manager $100-$200. If gratuity is not included and you’re tipping individuals, set aside $200-$500 in cash to be safe.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

  • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
  • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
  • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
  • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
  • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
  • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
