I wanted to remodel my row house and spoke to Ed about remodeling the kitchen first. He gave me lot of options to choose from. The options are very high end and i wanted something in a budget, he gave me options within my budget and it's been 2 days since they started working. There planning and workmanship is excellent. I will recommend this contractor for remodeling kitchen. I've proposed him to Remodel my entire house and also to build a deck as well. Had to pay a retainer to EBRR for the drawings and permits, but I'm happy with the services I'm getting.

Because of a scheduling quirk in a kitchen remodeling project, we needed some spot demolition while our contractor was out of town. Dante took care of this work in outstanding fashion. 1. His crew did the work efficiently, safely, and carefully. Even though they were removing plaster, they were able to leave the site immaculate after taking the wall down. 2. Dante always responded in incredibly timely fashion, immediately answering all my e-mails, arriving early for the estimate and work appointments, and finishing the job for us on a very tight schedule. 3. FamilyBiz's estimate was very reasonable, almost half my other estimates. I recommend Dante wholeheartedly.

Jenrri from Ordinez Home Improvement was awesome and I highly recommend him. I had receding lights put in, a light from the ceiling and porch light fixed. A few hours, reasonably priced and he cleaned up after the work was done. Very professional!

Ryan did a fantastic job in remodeling our bathroom with a reasonable price. He is responsive, punctual and very experienced. He finished the tasks ahead of the schedule and made recommendations for other professions, who are as experienced as he is. Ryan treats everyone with courtesy, is truely delighed to work with. He worked with other people well, so I would like him to do my other projects in my home as well. Looking forward to see him again.

I had a great experience working with this contractor. Initially I asked for a quote for one part of the home and since he was there, asked he if could provide a quote for other parts of the home including my half bath. The price was right and he answered my questions to my liking, so I eventually moved forward with the contract for the half bath. He offered to help me pick up any materials prior to the project start date, though I was able to have materials delivered or picked up on my own time, but I appreciated the gesture. He and his team arrived the day of the start of the project on time and finished in 2 days. There was a hiccup with the piping in my home that was discovered once they started working but they fixed it without issue. I would definitely recommend this company for bath remodels.

Erick and his team did a kitchen remodeling project for me in Fairfax. They installed recessed lighting, removed the bulkhead moved the air vent that was in the bulkhead, installed the cabinets and backsplash, installed new appliance and a new sink, faucet and installed new breakers for the new appliances. They did everything in a professional, neat and timely manner. He even came on a Sunday to accommodate my tenants schedule. My tenants told me that they have never seen any contractors who left the house clean and tidy at the end of each day. He was a true pleasure to work with and made the project easy even though I live 800 miles away. I highly recommend Ordonez cleaning service. He has earned my trust and I told him that I will count on him to take care of my house. In Virgina.

After a heavy storm, we had water leaking from our lights in the kitchen and from our electric panel in our basement! I called MJ Home Services and Dale came out the next day to investigate the leaks. He quickly turned around an estimate to fix both issues as I told him I wanted to fix the issues ASAP. Prices were very reasonable and he insisted on finding the cause of the leaks instead of assuming the obvious (the bay window in the kitchen). The "obvious" cause of the leak wasn't actually the problem after his investigation as Dale found that the problem was actually the window on the next level up. It was allowing water in and running down the brick into the kitchen drywall ceiling. I couldn't be happier that we chose MJ home services to complete the repairs and everything was fixed way beyond my expectations. Also, the coordination of service by Melissa was amazing.

Our experience with Mr. James and his team was very pleasant. All of the guys were very knowledgeable and professional. They handled all permits and inspections necessary to complete the project. We noticed an infestation of mold growth in one of our properties. We were already contemplating remodeling this area of the basement anyway. We decided to not only remediate the mold but also to hang new drywall throughout the entire basement, install about 13 recessed lights with smart motion switches, slate tile flooring, and rough in and install a full bath in the space. James came in and offered my husband and I a lot of different options to reach our desired goal beyond the mold remediation. He also did the bathroom design, and suggested some beautiful tile combinations and we loved them all. In short we decided to go with James to do the work and the project went flawless. Very professional, clean within reason during a renovation, and very organized and personable. He kept us informed at every stage and there were no surprises. They completed the project in about10 days including county inspections. James followed up with us a month after the job was completed to make sure that everything ok. Great customer service!! We will definitely be using Unlimited Resources in the near future and have recommended James and his team to several people already.

I'm a do it yourself'er type of person. However when I found water damage from a poor gutter installation I needed help. American. Home & Hardscape were hired to replace the exterior wood finish on a dual bay windows, reconfigure gutters and partial roof finishings. The job took only a few day to complete the major work. Impressive! The final product was clean and seamless. An important fact considering they worked on the front of my townhouse. My neighbor commented that the house didn't look sad anymore. Richard and his team are very knowledgeable, personable and skilled. They worked with me and provided invaluable suggestions on completing my work on the interior water damage. We encountered a few hiccups such as a miscommunication on number of paint layers and typos on a change order. Richard was very accommodating, understanding and worked quickly to resolve them. All in all, great first experience. I would recommend them for any project and plan to use them for my future bath, laundry and kitchen projects.

Mike and team did a fantastic job today. I requested for a junk removal service initially. When I spoke to Mike over the phone, I explained to him what other thing I wanted to get done to see if his team could offer me a one stop shop. Mike was able to give me a quote rightaway without hesitant. Mike was extremely well communicated on pricing, arrival time and estimated time for completion. We maintain communication prior to the day of the job and I was impress with how responsive and polite Mike was. I took pictures of the stuff I had and he was really confident that him and his team can do all of it in one trip. My husband and I was skeptic at first but we decided to give Mike and his team a try. We want to respect our contractor’s time as well as our time. We already did all the initial work and move our stuff to the garage and front door, making it easy for just to lift everything into the trunk. Mike didn’t ask us to, but we just renovated our floors and re-painted our walls so we didn’t want the moving of stuff up and down the stairs to stratch any of our new flooring and walls. Upon arrival, the team got to work right-away. The inspection of the junk was about 5 minutes, then they just started breaking the furnitures into smaller, packable pieces for the truck. I didn’t even know they can do that. The team load the junk in our entire garage, the mattresses, and finished the caulking service I asked for initially in an hour and half. Total trip for moving our mattresses to another location and loading the truck full of junk takes about 3 hours. That was pretty impressive. They were all included in the price quoted upfront. Note that I specifically described what I wanted done and distance travel prior to the day of the job. I’ve used many movers and haulers in the past and I wasn’t happy with the results. This was why I always try to look for a better team that I could trust. Thanks to Mike and his team, now we know who to call for our future projects. Will definitely use their service again.

Cesar and his team gutted our entire bathroom, retiled the tub area and floor, and replaced all the fixtures, medicine cabinet, lighting, etc. They also installed a new fan and recessed lighting in the tub area and primed and painted the bathroom. The bath now looks like something out of House Beautiful. This was BY FAR the easiest reno we've ever done. Cesar and his assistant provided the labor and he gave us a very detailed list of everything we would need to purchase. He recommended a tub and ceiling fan and told us how to order large items from Home Depot so they would be in the "pro area" for his pickup. We investigated granite counter tops and picked out the slab and sink we wanted but Cesar saved us a fortune by picking up the counter top from the fabricator and installing it himself - perfectly. The job was more difficult because the opening for the vanity was a non-standard 47 1/2 inches and vanities come in 48 inches, but they completed everything flawlessly. Cesar and his team arrived at exactly 8 AM every morning and were immaculate about cleaning and bagging refuse. We received estimates from companies who do all the buying and installing and they were $5000-7000 more! Even the all-labor estimates were higher. Cesar did an amazing job, was totally reliable, and saved us a fortune.

Squash Blossom Remodeling renovated our master bathroom and opened up our kitchen by cutting out a "window" in the wall separating the kitchen from the dining room. The bathroom - 1. Installed backer board and ceramic tile from tub to ceiling, 2. Installed shower doors, 3. Installed new toilet, 4. Tiled the floor, 5. Installed granite sink top and sink. 6. Installed vanity drawers and matching medicine cabinet, 7. Installed new lighting and a quiet fan. 8. Installed a large mirror to custom fit the area between the sink top, vanity lighting, and the outer wall. 9. Installed a wide door (36") on the bathroom. The kitchen - 1. Cut an opening 4' x 4' between the kitchen and the dining room. 2. Installed an "island" beneath the opening consisting of two base cabinets and a quartz countertop to match the existing countertop and cabinets. 3. Painted the new cabinets to match the existing ones. In order to give us a roomier bathroom and accommodate it for wheelchair use, the outer wall of the bathroom was moved out about 14". 36" doors were installed on both the bathroom and the adjoining bedroom. The bathroom, although it was the "master" bath, was really too small to accommodate more than one person at a time. Even though the space was lengthened by just a little over one foot, it now has the feel of a much larger space due to the large mirror and door and narrow sink and vanity drawers. We now have room to turn around. I can assist my wife, who is disabled, with her toiletry. If my wife should need a wheelchair in the future (it is likely she will), we will have a space that can accommodate entrance and exit for a wheelchair, both in the bath and bedroom. Mr. Lundberg selected a beautiful granite countertop and floor and wall tile for us as well as all of the fixtures because we were unable to go out shopping due to my wife's disability. Our little townhouse now seems much larger because we have a roomier bath and an "open" kitchen. Mr. Lundberg is quite an innovative and talented problem-solver.

FP Home Improvement did a wonderful job on our bathroom renovation! We hired Fausto and his team to complete the conversion of a tub into a custom walk-in shower. Not only did he do a beautiful job with the tile and fixtures, he also corrected several issues from prior work, such as releveling the floor. He was professional and very tidy. He was communicative and showed up when he said he would. As a bonus, he was able to complete the work in only a week! It is clear that he takes pride in his work and is committed to getting the job done right.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

Where should I start when remodeling a bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Before starting a bathroom remodel it’s crucial to know what you want and have a clear understanding of your maximum budget. If you’d love all marble fixtures but have $3,000 total, you will have to compromise. Being realistic about materials and money before you even contact a contractor will have you on the road to success. Here are some simple steps to follow in the planning stages of bathroom remodeling:

  • List your remodeling priorities in order of importance (e.g., 1. New shower head, 2. Replace flooring, 3. Install recessed lighting, etc.).
  • Calculate what you can realistically afford to spend on your bathroom remodel. Identify an “all in” price — meaning the absolute maximum you’re willing to pay, as well as what you’d prefer to spend.
  • Gather ideas from Pinterest about colors and finishes.
  • Research the costs of the materials and finishes you want and begin making choices about what is and isn’t possible to fit into your budget (once labor is included). If you’d like to stay under $10,000 total, but really love a $2,000 tub, plan to downgrade in other areas.
  • Request quotes from at least three reputable general contractors, share your vision and ideal materials, and work together from there.

How do I plan a bathroom remodeling project?

If you’re stumped on how to plan a bathroom remodeling project, it pays to hire a designer. This is especially important if you’re changing your bathroom layout in any way. Designers create contractor-friendly drawings indicating exactly where each tile and fixture will be installed, down to the light switches. This investment might cost you $300-$500 but save you significant frustration and miscommunication, while ensuring you get precisely what you want.

If you’re going to do your own design, planning a bathroom remodeling project means being organized and planning ahead. Create a general outline of what you want and the budget you have. Identify the specific fixtures, tiles, paint and vanity you prefer. Get all this organized before requesting quotes from two to three reputable general contractors. Once you find the right pro, get a written contract outlining scope of work, materials that will be used, timeframe and payment schedule. Communicate clearly about when to order your materials so they are ready and waiting by the time the contractor gets the permits. Your job from here is to communicate clearly, pay the contractor as the work progresses, and enjoy your remodel when it’s done.

For more on where to start when remodeling a bathroom check out The Complete Thumbtack Bathroom Remodel Guide.

How long should a bathroom remodel take?

With proper planning and a good general contractor, your bathroom remodeling project doesn’t have to take forever. The construction phase of the project will always vary based on your scope of work, the square footage and the condition of your bathroom under the surface layer. Inevitably an 80-square-foot master bathroom with major changes will take longer than a 25-square-foot guest bath undergoing a minor renovation. For a smaller bathroom, a facelift — the industry term for sprucing up the surface layer (such as paint, vanity, tiles or light fixtures) but keeping the existing footprint of the space — may take five to eight working days, as long as there are no surprises like mold waiting when the old vanity comes out. A more complex bathroom remodel that revamps the shower area (customizing the plumbing, installing tile and changing the shower door), updates the flooring and cabinetry, and adds new paint and new lighting could take anywhere from one week to three weeks. A full bathroom remodel that guts the room, changing the footprint and moving the electrical wiring and plumbing lines, could take four to eight weeks or more. To keep your bathroom remodel on schedule, have your materials ordered and waiting, and don’t make any change orders once construction begins. Planning is key to keeping a bathroom remodel on schedule.

For more on how long a bathroom remodel should take check out The Complete Thumbtack Bathroom Remodel Guide.

How much does it cost to remodel a bathroom?

Nationally, the average cost of bathroom remodeling is $14,000. Bathroom remodels can vary widely, from standard makeovers to luxurious master bathroom revamps. The factors that affect your bathroom remodeling cost are the finishes you choose (marble tiles can cost 20 times as much as standard subway tiles), the square footage of the project, regional labor rates in your area and the scope of work. Changing the layout or size of the bathroom will also raise costs. Moving electrical wiring and plumbing lines will also dramatically increase costs, as you’ll need to hire plumbers and electricians to handle the work. What’s happening behind your walls and under your floor will also affect bathroom remodeling cost: Rot, damage or mold can lead to additional work and charges. Overall, bathroom remodeling may offer great return on investment and also improve your daily life. Here are some examples of average bathroom remodeling costs:

  • 6-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $3,500, including labor and materials.
  • Standard renovation: $6,500-$10,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased. Labor may include taking out the shower and shower pan, installing new shower pan and shower, and installing new door, new vanity, new mirror, new bathroom fan, and all new fixtures.
    • Price variation depends on the quality of the finishes.
  • 10-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $7,200, including labor and materials.
  • Mid-range renovation: $12,000-$15,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased.
  • Upscale renovation: $35,000 and up. Price includes labor and materials. Items might include digital displays for fixtures, multiple shower heads and custom showers.
