Well well well, I'm not sure where to begin. Chef Serge is FABULOUS! His food is phenomenal and he is very creative with his menu. I had such a hard time narrowing down my selection. His personality is upbeat, lively and FUN! And all while cooking amazing food! I emphatically recommend Chef Serge to anyone looking for a CHEF, a cook, a caterer, anything you can use him for, do it! He also brought an assistant who was equally as pleasant and amazing. They were great!  Excellent customer service from start to finish.  Mercedes helped me create my menu as I had no idea what I wanted.  They were very timely and responsive to all of my questions.  The day of my event, they arrived on time and Mercedes even stayed for a while to show my niece (who was serving for me) how to plate the food like a pro!  I mean it really looked and taste much like a 5 star gourmet meal!  I was super impressed!

I can tell you from experience that Top of the City is by far and away the best deal for a 5 star catering experience. Our 6th daughter was just married and I wish we had found Top of the City for the first 5. They gave us the best price with the most elegance and the most complete service than any of the previous caterers we used or interviewed, and we probably have checked out 30 during the past few years. Our guests raved over the appetizers, the dinner was nicely prepared and plentiful. The staff was very professional and friendly. Our wedding reception went smoothly and we were free to enjoy ourselves. Maribel the owner was immediately responsive every step of the way in the planning and flexible in accommodating our special needs and desires. Top of the City gets my vote for the best deal in town. I cannot recommend Eleven Courses more. I worked with Megan as my coordinator and she was such a delight! She was very professional and easy-going to work with and answered all emailed questions quickly--I can honestly say that throughout the process I felt I was in good hands. I never felt uncomfortable asking about pricing or any strange questions or requests we had and the guidance Megan provided was much appreciated. We traveled a couple hours to Owings Mills, MD (we live in Springfield, VA) to attend our tasting at their offices. We met Jim and Megan in person, and the tasting decided it for my husband and me. We immediately knew these were the caterers for our wedding. The food was incredibly delicious and now, several weeks out after the wedding, our guests are still talking about how tasty everything was. Their prices are amazingly reasonable, especially given how beautifully presented and delicious their meals are--they have an affordable price point, however, the service and food delivered is that of the super-pricy, high-end caterers (services which I often use in my firm and am well-familiar with). It was very much appreciated how they didn't nickel and dime us and were proactive in helping out and finding ways to make the wedding special. We consider ourselves incredibly fortunate to have hired Eleven Courses for our caterers and intend to hire them again, should we plan another huge celebratory bash.

I would recommend Stonehill Catering to anyone! From the first time we spoke till the very last min they were responsive, thoughtful and listened to the needs. Our wedding was scheduled for last year and we had to move it a whole year and they did with no problem. They go above and beyond to fit your needs and ensure you are getting what you want! My guests could not stop talking about the food that was served. Lastly they did a awesome job in ensuring that the bridal party was taken care when they returned from photos! Honestly this company is the best and sweetest to work with! 👏👏😁

On a whim, I decided to use Thumbtack to find a caterer for my mom's 72nd birthday party. OMG. I am SOOOO glad that I did!! I have planned a number of parties in my day, and I have yet to find one with such great professionalism and wonderful customer service I experienced with AC Catering. First off, they can fix just about anything!! While I had a basic menu in mind, I was forced to rethink things based on the wide variety of options presented by AC Catering. Other caterers wanted me to come up with the menu initially without giving me an idea of their speciality items. With AC Catering, you can get ANYTHING from breakfast, lunch, dinner..including smoked pit grilled items. So, I contacted them with my initial thoughts for a menu. Within 2 days, I received a proposal from the owner, George. Pricing was perfect, even with delivery. Additionally, they provide utensils, plates, condiments, etc. I was pleased. I had to make a last minute change. George was able to accommodate my request with no hassle. I called him just to make sure this change wouldn't pose a problem. He said "No worries. I got you." And, he wasn't kidding. So, party day comes. I'm a bit nervous because I never tasted the food or visited his brick and mortar store. However, the previous reviews from Thumbtack customers were all stellar. After meeting George in person, I totally understand why the reviews are so stellar. George is extremely pleasant and engaging. He arrived on time and was totally prepared to set up everything. He shared some jokes with my brother. Gave compliments to the birthday girl. He even shared the history about his family business. This party was for 50+ people. So, everything had to be right. Let me just say that George and his team didn't disappoint! The greens (with smoked turkey), baked beans and rice were EXCELLENT. I've eaten a lot of rice in my day. But, can I tell you how fabulous the yellow rice is? Very delicious. For meats, I ordered bbq chicken and burgers. Again, everything was wonderful. You would think burgers would just be bland and lacking flavor. NOT AC Catering burgers. They were thick, juicy, and seasoned well. More than enough food was provided. In fact, I had to encourage guests to take home plates of food. The deviled eggs were tasty. However, they were a bit messy due to lots of filling. But, it was totally fine. My guests put the smash on them. All throughout the event, everyone had positive comments and asked "who catered the food?" I didn't hesitate to tell them about George and AC Catering. I HIGHLY recommend them. In fact, I'm trying to find another excuse to celebrate so I can utilize them again!! Thank you, George, for making my mom's birthday so great. You will be hearing from me again. May your catering business continue to grow. God Bless you and your family.

I highly recommend Shore is Delicious, Catering by Teresa. I contracted with Teresa to cater an after (Wedding) reception party at my house in Gambrills. Teresa was extremely helpful in helping me decide what menu would be appropriate, providing suggestions and alternatives during the planning process. Teresa was very easy to get a hold of when needed, and responded with the answers to my questions very quickly. A majority of the food that Teresa served to my 65 guests was hand made, and it was absolutely delicious! Teresa's cooking skills and ability to create a balanced menu were impressive. Teresa and her crew were on time, and had the area set-up and ready to go by the time my guests started to arrive after the wedding reception. She went out of her way by providing tasteful table coverings and center pieces, even thought I did not ask for those. The quality of her work was excellent! Aside from the delicious food, the most impressive attribute of Teresa's catering service was their willingness to provide the "Complete Service." Teresa prepared all of the food, delivered it, served it and stayed until the end, making sure that the area was 100% clean and in order before she left. In addition, Teresa brought along a crew of helpers that provided anything that was needed to ensure that my guests had a good time. When researching for caterers, this was tough to find. Most wanted to make the food, put it on the tables and go. Not Teresa. In closing, I highly recommend and without reservation Shore is Delicious, Catering by Teresa for anyone's catered event. The planning, preparation and care taken by Teresa and her crew was fabulous. Tom Doyle

Thank you to Creative Visions Cuisine, LLC for the delicious food you made for my dad’s surprise birthday party. It was a pleasure to work with a company with so much insight into menu options that would work best for what we had in mind and for an outdoor venue. The selections were perfect! Also appreciated was the flexibility with last minute menu changes and your willingness to go above and beyond by helping us move everything indoors when the rain started.

Soleia's catered a graduation party for us recently for about 50 people. They did a wonderful job from nuts to bolts, visiting our home beforehand to see where and how they would lay things out, bringing staff to assist in setup both with their food and equipment and our decorations. That was a welcome surprise. The food was delicious and we received a lot of compliments about the catering. The cake that she baked was wonderful and again many compliments. They went out of their way to make everyone happy and worked very hard while they were there. We ate leftovers for a week! They also arranged for a tent, tables and chairs because I wasn't sure about the weather and I had many people tell me it was a perfect event. Overall, they did a wonderful job and I would highly recommend them.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

Do you tip a wedding caterer?

Tipping 15 percent to 20 percent on a $3,000 catering bill can feel daunting — especially in light of all the other costs of throwing a wedding — but tipping your wedding caterer is standard practice. Be sure to ask your caterer about their specific policies. Many catering companies include gratuity as a line item on their bill. If tipping is not automatically included in your total, a good approach is to tip all the people involved the day of the event rather than paying one lump sum to the catering company. For each server and bartender, you can tip $20-$50, depending on how long they were onsite and whether they did exceptional work. You can also tip the chef; experts suggest $50. It’s also a good idea to tip the catering manager, the point-of-contact person who keeps the catering service running smoothly the day of your wedding, ensures all the food looks beautiful and is plentiful, and resolves any mishaps. Industry pros recommend tipping the catering manager $100-$200. If gratuity is not included and you’re tipping individuals, set aside $200-$500 in cash to be safe.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

  • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
  • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
  • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
  • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
  • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
  • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
