My husband and I were thrilled with Stef's professionalism and genuine love of animals. This being our first time using a pet service, we weren't sure what to expect. She took great care of our cat who looked well and was very happy when we arrived home from our trip. We highly recommend her to anyone looking for a caring and responsible pet sitter in the DMV. Best regards, Nikki & Oliver

Having quality care for the pet that I love so very much, required much research and someone who genuinely cares about my loved one. After looking for quite some time for a local pet sitter, I was blessed to have found Walking with Renzo & Ruby! My dog and I were one of the lucky ones that got the Renzo & Ruby experience! Their amazing owner Natasha is top notch and is very accomodating. She met all the needs that I asked for and more! Natasha welcomed us to a break the ice session. Mink and I were invited over to meet Renzo & Ruby to help with my dogs socialization skills, this helped with Mink's aprehesion she sometimes has with other dogs. Natasha offered the in home care and drop by visits if I needed it. I was assured that my dog would do fine in her home or mine because Renzo & Ruby were very good about sharing their space! Mink's nervousness diminished as she warmed up to Natasha and the introduction to her babies Renzo & Ruby, prior to her stay! I was elated and impressed at the attentiveness being displayed. While on vacation, Natasha sent the cutest pictures of Mink on the ride over and while warming up to her dogs! I will definitely recommend her services to anyone who is looking for superior care for their pet/s. Thank you Natasha! Alindia

Donna Andrews has done an excellent job looking after our dear cat. She has a genuine love for cats, founded in long experience, and will make a point of getting to know and appreciate the individual personality of any cat she cares for. Donna prepared conscientiously for her responsibilities with our cat, was meticulous in following all care instructions in letter and spirit, communicated regularly and fully about how things were going from day to day, and left a detailed written summary. We returned to find our cat doing beautifully well, happier after being in her care than with any of 3 other previous cat-sitters. Highly recommended.

I needed someone to watch my cat while I went home for Spring Break. Dee did an amazing job for a great price and I felt completely comfortable leaving my baby in her hands. She is now my go-to pet sitter. Highly recommended!

Clare Owings was just wonderful. Something that I found extremely valuable was that she listened to my situation very well so she gave me pointers and suggestions taking into consideration my lifestyle. My 9-month-old dog has learned so much just after two sessions with her. She is excellent with dogs and, maybe more importantly, with dog owners. She knew how to "handle" my dog and me pretty well. I appreciated her coming not only to my house but also to the dog park and to places where I walk with my dog. I really recommend her!

Barking Trails has been excellent to work with so far. Their rates are outstanding, and their responsiveness is on point. I was really hesitant at first to have someone in my house while I am not there, but the dog walker they sent has put my mind at ease! She texts me before arriving, sends me photos of the dogs every day, and texts me again once she leaves the house. (Not to mention that my dogs love her!)

Oh my goodness, Jenny was the best, and affordable compared to DC area dog sitters. She had Pet Vet Background, so she's on top of everything, especially if your dog has meds. Sounds as if she was totally on top of walks and such. I will be using her again for our dog Daisy, hoping she doesn't become super popular from this positive review and others' reviews. I asked her if she would want to.watch my Teens too! (ha ha)

We had a wonderful experience with Thumbtack and Shatiya. Our longtime pet-sitters left town. We gave the website a try and quickly made the connection to Petstigious. We liked the team's experience, and rates were competitive. The initial meeting was helpful, and we felt confident while we were gone. It was fun and adorable to get pictures and updates. We know the cats were happy and well taken care of. Thank you so much! Until next time, Stacia and Brian (+B & B)

I had two senior Yorkies and one had special needs. Their pet sitter always provided professional and exceptional services. She would always provide care that met their individual needs and thus provided reassurance to working pet parents.

Kim is very professional and sweet, she took care of my kitty cat and chinchilla while we were away for our wedding. I have an incredibly needy cat but he wasn't super desperate when we got home so I could tell he had enough attention. We then used Kim to check on the house and chinchilla while away for our honeymoon. I usually worry a lot about my animals and can get a bit anxious but she was very understanding and I felt relieved to have her with them. I left my cat at a friend's house for our honeymoon but I think if we go on another long trip I will just ask Kim to come back. She has even brought in packages for us and made an extra stop to turn off my ridiculous house alarm so the beeping noise wouldn't bother my chinchilla. Highly recommend. (Oh and she is one of the only pet sitters we have had who isn't scared of the chinchilla. I can tell she is a real animal lover)

FourDogLovers was able to watch my puppy, Biscuit, for about a month while I searched for a dog friendly apartment. It was amazing! Prior to arriving, my puppy and I practiced basic commands like "sit" and "down," but we mostly struggled with her crate training and going to the bathroom outside. After spending time at FourDogLovers, she knows the basics of the commands mentioned above and she is even listening to her crating command. This was all after one month! I can only imagine how well she will do with more sessions. The trainer, Kevin, was very hands on, informative, and inclusive. He made sure to keep me updated on Biscuit's progress and he gave me trips and tricks to try at home with her. I proudly recommend FourDogLovers, specifically Kevin, for your family!

Angie is so wonderful with my dog and she loves her right back! Angie is always flexible and works with my hectic schedule all the time. I trust her in my home because she is so professional. Her love of and commitment to animals is apparent in her attention to them...she has sometimes noticed ear infections and the like I haven't even! I feel lucky that I found Angie and recommend her to anyone that needs a pet sitter/ dog walker.

Theresia and The Pet Stop have been our go-to sitter for our dog. Tucker loves going to Theresia's and practically pulls my arm off to get inside every time we arrive. Theresia treats all of the dogs who stay at her bed and biscuit like they are her own and I know Tucker prefers playing with those dogs and having the huge yard to play in over any other option when we have to board him somewhere. Theresia has also been great at making sure Tucker gets any medications that he requires while staying there. I absolutely recommend her.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to hire a house sitter?

House-sitting can be a lifesaver when you’re leaving town for any length of time. Whether you work remotely, you’re taking a much-needed vacation, or you just want to road-trip for a few days, it’s wise to have a pro keep an eye on your house and pets while you’re gone. Your home is more likely to stay safe and you won’t have to wrangle the kitty into a kennel to travel with you. The national average pet-sitting price ranges between $20 and $30. Pet-sitting and house-sitting costs will vary based on where you live in the country and regional labor rates. Another factor in cost is how long you want the house-sitter to stay. Some people prefer to have the house-sitter stay the night at their house, perhaps to care for an elderly pet or simply to keep a watchful eye on the home at all times. Overnight stays will cost more, ranging anywhere from $50 to $100, depending on services provided. For day visits, house-sitting and pet-sitting prices will increase incrementally the longer the visit and the more service you want performed. For example, a quick 10-minute visit to feed and walk the pet and bring in the mail could be $12.50, a 25-minute visit could be $18, a 40-minute visit $25, and a 50-minute visit $32. How much should you pay for a pet sitter?

Pet sitting provides your precious pet with in-home care. A pet-sitter can make a brief visit during the day to provide snacks, playtime or affection, or stay at your house for one or more nights to tend to your pet. Prices for pet-sitting will vary based on length of the visit. Nationally, pet sitting prices range from $20 to $30, although prices run higher for your sitter to stay the night. Prices will also be affected by where you live in the country. Here are some examples of average pet-sitting prices based on length of time and region:

  • 30-minute visit: $17 in a small Texas town.
  • 30-minute visit: $25 in Southern California.
    • 45-minute visit: $28.
    • 60-minute visit: $32.
  • Overnight stay (10 hours): $50 in Texas.
  • Overnight stay (10 hours): $85 in Southern California.
    • 12 hours: $100.
    • 24 hours: $200. This is a good option for a sick, elderly or brand-new pet that needs constant supervision.
