Hiring Curtis Moore was the best decision I could have made regarding my search quest. I researched many professional, experienced Private Investigators, both online and locally, and chose Curtis as the best possible option from the 23 contenders. Now that I've experienced: his superior work ethic, his valuable insight in discerning my needs, his thoughtful follow-up call the day after I'd processed his investigation results and his incredibly prompt response-I have but one conclusion. *Curtis Moore walks on water.* This is your choice, People. It is impossible that so many glowing reviews from his clients can't lead you to desiring the same peace of mind and spirit which he will offer you. I'm incredibly grateful to have crossed paths with him via this site. Believing for the best for all who enlist his services as well. Thank you so much, Curtis. You rock!

I requested a skip trace on six individuals and even provided a lot of information that i had uncovered myself to help make they're job easier. I paid for the agreed upon service on April 24th and got a total of one skip trace returned. After several e-mails I asked for a refund and because I used Paypal, was able to dispute the charge to hopefully get a refund for the services that were never performed. I know that not all private investigators are as horrible as this one but STAY AWAY from this company.

Having dealt with another investigative firm who delivered less than stellar results, LIA Security & Investigations LLC shows how it’s supposed to be done. They were on the “case” from the beginning, have routinely gone above and beyond and have been very thorough and communicative. They present their findings in a clear and concise manner and quickly establish a level of trust that is critical when dealing with highly sensitive matters. Great firm!

I have nothing bad to say about my experience. From the initial phone call through the receipt of the affidavit, STW Research & Investigation Services was very professional. Not only did Harry explain thoroughly how the process works, but he also worked with my schedule, and reimbursed me with no questions after I realized that I only needed to serve one party instead of two.

Great communication from the beginning via phone and email. This is a very professional company. We received great tips from the CEO personally that led us in the right direction. The staff communicates well with us and reply quickly. I don't want to go into too much detail since the case is ongoing, but I highly recommend this company if you need a private investigator.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a private investigator do?

First and foremost, good private investigators follow laws. Unlike on TV, they don’t break in windows or hack into hospital computer systems to get you intel. When you hire a private investigator, you’re hiring a professional to gather facts and find information for you. Although they can’t obtain certain information (such as health records), they do have access to information that most civilians do not. Often private investigators are hired to perform surveillance or background checks or investigate cases such as adultery, child custody, missing persons, hidden assets, or debugging, and theft or other crimes.

Private investigators can be hired to interview people and provide that information to the client, perform photo or video surveillance, monitor activity at a location where you suspect criminal activities or questionable behavior, track a person’s movements, find missing people, do deep-dive background checks, and more. Private investigation can be helpful if you’re trying to get a court order but need evidence. Private investigators can also help find birth parents. Nationally, the average price range for private investigation is $70-$210 per hour.

What does a private investigator cost?

Private investigation isn’t just for blockbuster action movies. Hiring a private investigator can help in all kinds of situations ranging from finding a birth parent to improving personal security. Nationally, the average price range for private investigation is $70-$210, although pricing often hovers between $40 and $100 depending on the complexity of the services you need. Where you live in the country will affect your costs for private investigation; larger cities have higher business overhead and a higher cost of living, which in turn means higher service rates. The complexity of your case can also affect cost. A basic background check may have a flat rate, while hiring a private investigator to help with your child custody case may require more legwork and research, and therefore cost more. Some private investigators work on retainer. A retainer is essentially a nonrefundable deposit you pay to the professional — meaning you have retained their services — who then works against that amount. Here are some examples of average private investigation costs:

  • Hourly rate: $60-$70; costs can vary based on current fuel prices.
  • Flat rate: $100 for comprehensive background investigation services.
  • Retainer: $1,500 minimum retainer required by some pros before starting work.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
