True to the other reviews, Brandon was not only on time, but he was early! I need help anchoring furniture to the wall in my baby's nursery, installing a stair baby gate, lowering a crib mattress, and fixing a faucet. He worked quickly while he was here without sacrificing quality. The quote was fair, and he even helped do another small project while he was here. I definitely plan on using Brandon's services again in the future.

Brandon Construction was very reasonably priced and the quality of work was excellent. I was so impressed with their professionalism and prompt service that instead of one job, I had them completed seven different jobs ranging from hardwood floor replacement (3 rooms), widening doors, opening a wall to add counter space and painting. All works was done efficiently - most within one day for each job. When I had to select materials (granite/ flooring, etc.) they recommended vendors that have quality materials and knowledgeable staff as well as reasonable pricing. Every step of the process was easy and the results were amazing. I am so pleased!!!! I would highly recommend them for any home improvement needs. They are really great to work with.

I think Costa Flooring did a great job installing and finishing two floors of (about 2200 sq ft) unfinished hardwood flooring in my home in April 2018. Hugo, the owner, is very personable and works hard to ensure his customers are satisfied. All of the members of the installation, sanding, and finishing crews were also very nice and hard working individuals. I also had the crew sand and refinish a staircase, install and caulk new baseboards through the entire house, install and finish hickory shoe molding and stain the staircase unfinished railings, newell posts and rosettes, which I installed). The hardwood we selected to be installed was 6.5 inch wide hickory hardwood planks with character. This particular hardwood is much harder to install and finish than your typical oak flooring so I think the crew did an good job with installation. The quote/price was very reasonable for all of the work they completed. They told me it would take 4 days to install, but it only took the crew 3 days. The sanding process took about two days and that included sanding 14 stair treads and risers. There would a lot of knots and natural wood imperfections that needed to be filled with wood putty, which they made the sanding process more difficult than most jobs. Overall, I think they did a great job sanding. The subcontractor that Hugo hired to install the baseboards was not good. However, he gave me a nice discount and fixed most of the mistakes made by this subcontractor. I would have to say the staining and finished process completed was excellent. The finished product looks better that any prefinished hardwood that I considered purchasing before making the decision to go with unfinished hardwood. There were a few spots that I thought needed to be fixed and Hugo came back and fixed them to my liking. Overall, I am happy with my choice of hiring Hugo and his crew to complete my job. They did a great job!

After talking to several contractors (including HomeDepo and Lowe's), my wife and I realized that it was not easy to find someone who could genuinely offer us a quality work at a competetive price and save us time; until we found the Fenix Flooring team (Edwin and George). They did an exellent job by completing the project ahead of schedule and at the best rate (saving us critical time and money). We highly recommend if you are planning to do any flooring job!

Erick and his team are exceptional. I contracted Erick initially to do some minor house repairs. However, after not being satisfied with the work of contractor hired to paint, I asked Erick to do a lot more work to include painting, installation of kitchen appliance, replace flooring, miscellaneous carpentry, and electrical work. Erick was so responsive to my need to get the work done quickly as getting ready to list house. Quality of work is good, Erick knows his trade and made suggestions and recommendations that proved to be invaluable. His team are hard workers and take pride in what they do. And, the pricing is exceptional. Definitely recommend and will use again in the future.

Ben and Paul were a pleasure. The meeting for the estimate went smoothly we discussed expectations for the job and worse case scenarios. The work was to repair preengineered flooring that was lifting as a result of water damage. Soon after the work began it was discovered that the damage was more extensive than imagined. They got right to work; were flexible; and completed the job promptly. The initial price had to be revised up based on the more extensive damage. The new pricing was reasonable. I have been left with great peace of mind after the completed repairs.

Very good experience. The estimate was completed in three days and the work was scheduled shortly after. The work was completed as planned and on time. Marvin's contract requires that you inspect the work and sign off on the job before final payment. I like that this step is part of the formal process. They did a great job. Marvin is very responsive and his price was very reasonable more in line with what I expected to pay. The job was to paint the exterior wood/trim on a townhouse (HOA compliant - in general the trim is in good condition). Other companies on Thumbtack and Angie's List were quoting me much higher prices. I would hire him again. Great balance of quality and price.

Jose and his crew recently installed nearly 1700 square feet of hardwood flooring in our family room, five second floor bedrooms, upstairs hallway, and the stairs. His crew was always prompt, friendly, conscientious, polite, knowledgeable, and most importantly, meticulous. They took the time to do the job right and cleaned up after each day. And you can see the quality in their work. His price was very competitive. And they really liked my dog! We highly recommend Ventura Carpeting. P.S. They are coming back to install a custom stair and hallway runner.

During the recent torrential rains in my area, water leaked everywhere into my basement. Based on reviews, we called MJ Home Services & Flood Restoration and they came out promptly to remove the damaged flooring/floorboards and to dry out the walls before more serious issues could develop. We were thoroughly impressed by them. Everything was Great! But the rate was a little higher then what I thought and that is why I am giving you a 4 stars rating instead of 5 stars!!!!

This company is beyond awesome! The crew arrived ahead of schedule and got to work immediately. Within a matter of 2 and a half hours all three of my kid's bedrooms were completed. I was very impressed not only with the quality of their work but the level of professionalism as well. I highly recommend them and definitely plan on hiring them again in the very near future. Thank you all again for a job well done!

Jose with Ordonez Floor was great to work with! He is very nice and was extremely responsive throughout the process. He and one other gentleman installed carpet in our basement and it looks fantastic!! Also, besides being very competitive with the price, the turn-around time was unbelievable...Jose totally worked around my schedule, which was great, and very much appreciated!! (I requested a consultation on Friday, which was set up the next day, and then carpet was installed on Monday, so the whole process from start to finish took less than 3 day). I will recommend Jose and Ordonez Floor to anyone I know who needs new flooring!! They did an excellent job!!!!

The painters showed up on time and did an excellent job. I didn’t have to move anything because they moved my furniture to the center of the rooms and covered everything: furniture, floors, counters, etc. I was very satisfied with the time it took the 3 workers to complete the job. They put everything.back in place before leaving and left my house very tidy. I would highly recommend this business. Thank you for a job well done.

I had an amazing experience with Free My Timber. They were the first quote I received and after speaking with numerous contractors I came back to this company. They were the most knowledgeable and answered all of my questions which gave me a detailed understanding of wood floors. They were reasonably priced and also provided high quality work. I had a quick turn around time and luckily they had a last minute opening and were able to fit me in. The owner is very professional and personable and truly appears to love what he does. I highly recommend this company. I can only uploads four pictures, the first two are before (I pulled up linoleum in one area) and the last two are after in different areas of the home. The floors look beautiful throughout. My floors are red oak (learned that through the owner) and I had them apply a dark walnut stain.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

  • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
  • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
    • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
  • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
  • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
    • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
  • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
    • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
    • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
    • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
      • Includes removal of the dura rock.
  • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

  • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
    • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
  • 620 square feet of maple floor:
    • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
    • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
      • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
