We moved into a two-bedroom house and our designer recommended EBRR as a general contractor for our major renovation projects. Luis, the project manager, came in, listened to all our needs and specificity notated our request. We had a complete estimate for everything within only a few days including cost and time frames. Barry and EBRR was able to accommodate with all architect's drawings, all subcontractors and permits. The work was done on time and within budget, even with the inevitable surprises that always come up during renovation. They were punctual, always respectful and very neat.

GUEMRI Appliance Repair responded to my request within the hour, which was a late Saturday afternoon. A technician showed up 10:30am Sunday, and my problem was repaired in less than an hour. He explained the two circumstances which caused the problem, how they most likely occurred (poor workmanship by previous contractors) and how he made additional provisions such that not only would the problem be fixed, that it should not occur in the future. The price was so reasonable I paid a little extra. I would definitely recommend this company, and will use them again in the future if the need arises.

After three disappointments with previous contractors either not showing, overcharging, and lack of response, our company was assigned Logan Mechanical. I can honestly say they were great. I appreciate their professionalism and true passion for the job. They could have easily tried to get one over as other companies have, but instead they came in, fixed the issues created by another company, as well as the original concern. Not only were they prompt and helpful in explaining the process, they provided different options for our situation. Because of their great work, we have happy clients now, with working AC ;)

Our thermostat and heating system suddenly stopped working on one of the coldest days of the winter. We initially called our home warranty company, who has been reliable in the past, to request an emergency service technician for the repair. After several hours of waiting anxiously, the warranty company informed us they weren’t able to locate any available HVAC repair technicians in our area...they said the reason was because it is a Sunday and there is an unusually high demand for heating system repairs. Disappointed, we decided to try Thumbtack, and within a very short time of submitting our request, Andrew called us back, came by our house and got our heating system back up and running. We are very grateful for his responsiveness, professionalism, value, and quality of work. Thank you, Andrew!

After meeting with four different general contractors, Mr. Marvin Guzman with Baiza Construction, Inc showed his best attitude to take part on a serious complete home improvement we had for our 1956 home. He didn't only provided a quick estimate, But time frame to complete and over all his price. My project was based on a full 2 bathrooms remodeling, plaster walls removal/replacement, insulation, plumbing, electrical, kitchen remodeling and about 2500 square foot of hardwood floor installation. My best recommendation to future hires and families of his great quality work. My contract worth 86k were put on the best hands.

Robyn was great. He showed up on time, was tremendously professional and knowledgeable. He was able to help me with multiple jobs. He is officially my new appliance repair go to! He was able to fix a dishwasher in about 15 minutes. That three companies came out to repair (american home shield contractors) and couldn’t repair it in months. I highly recommend him.

Working with Salvation LLC was a wonderful experience. Ernesto and his team are outstanding. In fact, Ernesto found a creative solution to my HVAC/water heater issue that several other HVAC companies had not even considered. The finished installation was beyond my expectations; pre-installation preparation and post-installation cleanup could not have been better. I have had HVAC/water heater work done in the past but Salvation's work was superior to all of these other companies. The work was done at a reasonable price in a timely manner and Ernesto made sure that I understood all that would be involved in the installation. I highly recommend Salvation! I have already scheduled some additional HVAC work with Salvation and they will absolutely be my go-to HVAC company going forward :-)

Brian was absolutely amazing! My biggest concern when dealing with contractors is their honesty and integrity. Brian found what problem existed in the system and basically saved us thousands of dollars. I can honestly say if I had hired someone else they probably would've taken advantage of us and charged us more. I will recommend Brian to everyone!!

Great service at a great price! Nash and JD took my call and finished the job late on a Saturday night. I didn’t even notice my problem until after 5pm Saturday but I went to sleep that night with cold AC. The company I’ve used for years couldn’t get to me until Thursday so I tried thumbtack for the first time. I’m glad I did. I’ll be using Nash for my HVAC work from now on. Highly recommend.

Mr. Bogans was one several contractors that responded to my AC repair request through Thumbtack on a Sunday morning. After he answered a few questions I had, we agreed on a time later that afternoon to service my AC unit. He arrived promptly at the appointed time, just as his Company name indicates. He performed a thorough system diagnosis and determined that the internal fan motor had failed. Because of my AC unit's brand, and being a Sunday afternoon, he had to order the replacement motor the following day. On Monday morning, he provided me with his final quote and soonest availability, and completed the job on Tuesday. I was satisfied and pleased with Mr. Bogans' professionalism, and customer service-driven focus throughout the entire process.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who fixes furnaces?

If your furnace needs to be repaired, you’ll want to find a qualified heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) repair technician. Each state has its own licensing requirements; some require all HVAC technicians to have an HVAC license, while others only require someone operating an HVAC service and installation company with employees to hold a contractor’s license. For example, in Alabama, the Alabama Board of Heating Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Contractors regulates licensing, while in Kansas there is no state regulatory body and HVAC licensing can vary by region. For simple furnace repairs like changing out a filter, a trusted handyman can probably handle the job, but a trained professional should be hired for tasks like replacing a gas valve, installing a new inducer fan motor or other critical furnace repair jobs that involve dealing with gas leaks or other dangerous conditions. What is an HVAC system?

The letters in HVAC stand for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. An HVAC system enables you to regulate your home or building’s internal temperature (thermal control) for comfortable living and working. You can bring heat levels down in the summer and up in the winter, keeping your home or office livable year-round. HVAC systems can also help with humidity levels and regulate indoor air quality in a home or office. There are many types of HVAC systems and technologies available.

Many homes have a forced-air HVAC system. Both the heating and the central air conditioning units share a ductwork system where they either push in or pull out warm or cooled air. There are also heating and cooling systems that don’t require ductwork — such as ductless mini-splits — but work on the same principles of heat exchange. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670, with costs varying depending on the work you need done and the equipment you are installing.

How many years does HVAC last?

The number of years an HVAC system lasts depend on the type and brand of components that make up your system. The lifespan of an air conditioner averages between 15 and 20 years. The life expectancy of a tankless water heater is approximately 20 years, while a storage water heater is closer to 10-15 years. Ducts may need replacing within 10-15 years. Your equipment will have a longer life if you have regular tuneups and maintenance to keep everything in good working order. If you’re having repair problems and your HVAC system is over 10 years old, it’s a good time to consider the costs and benefits of repairing vs. replacing. Energystar.gov provides the following tips to help you decide whether to repair or replace:

  • Your HVAC system needs frequent repairs and your energy bills are increasing.
  • Your cooling or heating equipment is less efficient.
  • Rooms in your home are too hot or too cold.
  • Your heat pump or air conditioner is more than 10 years old.
    • Replacing your system with an Energy Star-certified unit could save up to 20 percent on your heating and cooling bills.
  • Your furnace or boiler is more than 15 years old.
    • You may choose to replace your system with an Energy Star-certified furnace (which is 15 percent more efficient than a conventional furnace) or an Energy Star-certified boiler (which is 5 percent more efficient).
  • Your home has humidity problems.
  • Your home has excessive dust.
    • Leaky ducts can pull particles and air from attics, crawl spaces and basements and distribute them throughout your house. Sealing your ducts may be a solution.
  • Your heating or cooling system is noisy.
    • You could have an undersized duct system or a problem with the indoor coil of your cooling equipment.
  • Your score on the Home Energy Yardstick is below five.
    • That means your home energy use is above average and you're probably paying too much for your utilities.

How much will it cost me to replace my furnace?

The national average for furnace replacement is between $1,800 and $2,500. The cost can range dramatically higher depending on the model of furnace you select, any repair work you require, your location and the cost of installation. Furnace installation costs can be more than the furnace itself due to the cost of doing business and the expertise needed to install the HVAC equipment. Installing a new furnace generally requires technical know-how and the proper tools and licensing. It’s best to hire a pro and budget for furnace installation rather than risk potentially unsafe DIY installation. This will ensure your home’s safety. Check to see if your HVAC contractor has the proper licensing to do the job. If you need duct repair or replacement, expect to pay more for your furnace installation costs. The price for duct repair could be an hourly rate ranging on average anywhere from $85 to $150 per hour, with additional costs for parts.

How much does it cost to get central air?

Prices for central-air HVAC systems will vary. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670 but can run as high as $5,000 or even $12,000 depending on the capacity you need and other factors. Installing central air conditioning requires an entire system that works together to draw hot air out of your home. The system includes an outdoor unit, which houses the condenser and compressor, and the evaporator coils. If you don’t have an existing duct system, ductwork will need to be installed, which will affect labor and material costs. Leaking or damaged ducts will also need to be replaced.
