Tim was great to work with - he was diligent and hard-working. He repaired our iron porch railing in two evenings, even working into the dark and rain!

I am very pleased with the results. I remodeled my kitchen. Several things were done - old back splash was removed and new back splash installed, over the stove microwave installed, granite countertop supports installed, painted cabinets and walls, added trim and molding to a patio door and window, etc.

I was really pleased with the overall experience with Baiza on my screened porch repair. From the owner to all of the workers on the job, everyone was extremely courteous and treated my home respectfully. The job site was keep clean every day; and when complete, you couldn't even tell that some minor construction took place. There weren't any issues for working around all the inclement weather or my changing work schedule. I wanted to be on-site as much as possible to give input; and they were happy to receive it. I would definitely have Baiza do the work on my next project.

To say Paul and his friend are amazing is an understatement. Paul solved a toilet clog that had been ongoing for 2 years & we had 2 plumbers before who could not fix it. He was able to remove a towel (accidentally flushed in) that had been stuck deep in the drain for 2 years. Really thankful to the team for fixing a toilet that had been unusable for 2 years. Their charges were very reasonable. Additionally, they also assembled/fixed our porch screen door that had been left partially assembled by a contractor before. The Langway Brothers are amazing. Would recommend them for any job.

Patrick installed a lattice shed under my porch and did an amazing job. His work was so good my neighbors hired him to do work at their house while he was here. His price was very fair and he was very gracious and kind to my wife and kids even bringing the kids a balloon one day. I have been disappointed in the past by handyman but I will definitely be using Patrick again.

I was very pleased with the professionalism, skill and attention to detail that Saul and his assistant provided yesterday. This was a relatively straightforward carpentry repair project -- replacing a damaged wooden balustrade on our front porch, and repairing woodpecker damage on the portico above it. The price was fair, and Saul even reduced it slightly when he realized that the job took less time than he had anticipated. An excellent experience all the way around.

We hired Christian and 5th Gen to do a full gut of our kitchen including opening up a wall to our dining room, plus some work to better integrate the former sleeping porch at the back of the house. From the initial meeting, Christian seemed genuinely interested in our project and in being a good thought partner for us, and that continued throughout the project. 5th Gen is a small, family operation with all of the associated pros and cons. They are helpful, friendly, responsive, and genuinely invested. With limited capacity, it can be hard to nail down a start date, or someone gets sick and hard to reach for a day or two. As they so often do, our scope expanded in the course of the project (along with our budget), but in the end we are SO happy with our kitchen and dining area. Hector, our foreman, was great to work with, and supportive of every crazy question or idea we came up with. If anything, he let us add too much without reigning us in. If your budget is firm, we would recommend pushing for regular timeline and budget updates to ensure you stay on track -- we would have benefited from some earlier communication on that front. All fair and worth it, but would have appreciated more warning. The team seemed to take this feedback very seriously when it was provided, and seems ready to make the adjustments. If a small, flexible operation you can really work with is what you want, 5th Gen is a great choice.

I hired Joseph for several small jobs around my house. Jobs included patching drywall in two rooms, repairing a porch, staining a deck, and inspecting a possible leak from the roof. He was on-site each day and made sure that everything got done to my satisfaction. He's definitely committed to making sure his clients are happy with his work, and I'll be using him again.

Jesus was great! After another company tried to upsell me on expensive work to my front porch that I didn't want or need, "Master Handyman" Jesus Paredes gave me honest information on what repairs I actually needed and offered excellent work at a fair price. The work took less time than expected, and Jesus left me the unused materials so I could return them to Home Depot for a refund, so the project wound up costing less than the original estimate. I will certainly call Master Handyman for future projects -- they do carpentry, painting, electrical, plumbing, drywall, pressure washing and more -- and I would recommend them without hesitation.

It was the most difficult job I've ever asked in my entire life. Many American companies refused to do it. Basically I felt badly to ask Deck Professionals to do such a horrible job. They had to cement the floor under my porch because groundhogs had made big holes, the size of my body! I needed to go sometimes under this long hot tunnel to get an animal stuck in the vent (mice, rabbits, snakes and so on...). I was afraid of the animals or falling thru the holes where the ground was not stable. Yet Deck Professionals came on time to do the job in 1 day 1/2. They had to squat to spread both gravels and cement since the long tunnel was less than 3 ft tall. I'm flabbergasted that they managed to do the job in this horrible "inferno" where one could hardly breathe. Before hiring Deck Professionals, I did read one client's bad review (I always read bad reviews). However I decided to hire them, among others, because the other companies wanted to cut corners. I went thru youtube to understand what was necessary to install cement. I learned that one has to first install gravels and then put cement. All the other companies refused to do so. They tried to persuade me that the heaps of dust would be enough to fill the holes and flatten the ground. I told them that if gravels were not used, groundhogs could come back and eventually make the cement collapse! Those shiesty companies tried to say the contrary!

Al Barney is my hero. He has been a part of our lives for 15 years here in Leesburg. He is my "GO TO GUY". I come up with an idea and I call Al. He makes it happen. In my last home he created an amazing outdoor space with a screened in porch and deck, flowing to an amazing patio. Years later he created a front porch that made my house unique to others in the neighborhood. Now, I have an older home that needed updating. He gave me an amazing kitchen with an island and cabinets that are breathtaking. Please come see my kitchen. I am proud to say that Al Barney is my friend, my designer, my builder and my mentor. Next stop....my master bathroom.

GET Home Improvement and Cleaning LLC completed both inside and outside the house projects. Inside the house, GET Home demoed, framed, drywalled, sistered a joist brace, painted, completed the trim, installed hardwood railing, doors, and corrected the toilet connection. In all three county inspections (framing, pre-conseal, final), Arlington county inspectors reviewed and passed GET’s interior work in the first inspection. Outside the house, GET Home power washed the large patio, stripped and painted a wooden front porch cover and cleaned the property. Overall, I was very satisfied with GET Home’s work and professionalism.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.
