From the initial call to discuss details to the actual move, Name Your Price (NYP) Movers was incredibly helpful. After contacting NYP through Thumbtack, Ali and I spoke over the phone to discuss details of the 2 movers, 17' foot truck, 3 hour proposal. When I inquired about an extra fee for stairs, Ali suggested having 3 movers instead of 2, and they could still do it within the 3 hour timeframe, which sounded good to me. He then sent over a detailed confirmation proposal that outlined their services, licenses, etc. and I paid a $50 deposit to confirm the move date. Closer to our move date, Ali called to confirm everything and ask if I needed any supplies. I said I didn't think so, but he told me that his staff would arrive, fully armed with supplies in case I change my mind. Luckily, they did indeed come with supplies because it turns out I did need them! I needed blankets for the wood furniture (free of charge), some plastic tape to tape the blankets in place, and then plastic wrap to cover up my white couch (four rolls of tape and wrap were pretty minimal in cost). Stas called me about an hour early to let me know that they were on their way and were running about 30 minutes behind, due to traffic, and I appreciated the notice. He arrived with his two colleagues, Larry and a another man (whose name I didn't catch, sorry!). They parked the truck, and we did a walk through of my condo and what needed to be wrapped, moved, etc. It took approximately an hour to wrap furniture, take apart my two beds (platform beds with all those slats and screws and one hydraulic lifting storage bed), and pack everything up in the truck. I don't know how they did it, but they got everything into that truck with plenty of room to spare! We drove over to my new home, and then did another quick walk through of the rooms, describing where the big things were going, as well as the garage, where I had a number of boxes we moved over ahead of time, that needed to be moved to their final rooms. Bless these guys, but they were so nice and professional, and moved every single thing where it had to go, despite the fact that we have four floors in our new home. They got everything moved into my new home, and the requisite furniture reassembled perfectly, and finished the entire process within three hours. I remember remarking that it was three hours, on the dot, while I was signing off on the work. I had previously been informed that I could pay the remainder of the work in cash, or there would be a nominal fee to pay with a credit card. I had every intention to get cash out, but I was busy packing and forgot. Of course, I had no idea beforehand that I would need some supplies either, so I wouldn't have had enough anyway. To pay via card, Stas called Ali to run my card, but fortunately, when I had originally paid the deposit online, I had opted to save my card info. Ali asked if I wanted to use the card saved, confirming the last 4 digits, and I did, so that made the process super quick and easy. I would gladly hire Name Your Price Movers again and recommend them to anyone in a heartbeat. Thank you very much!! (and sorry for taking so long to write a review, it's taken time to unpack and get internet in our new home!)

Lewis Piano Movers moved a baby grand piano for me this morning and did a fantastic job. Extremely responsive during the scheduling phase, and quick turnaround on my request. They handled the piano with great care, and ensured it was just where we wanted it before leaving this morning. Highly recommended!

Standard 3 bedroom single family home move from Washington DC to Fort Lauderdale FL . The price was good considering the request of expedited service mean we received our stuff in 2 days. Nothing was broken and everyone spoke English. I would use again and recommend the service to family and friends. Quailty movers at A-1! Thank you!

These guys stepped up on MLK Jr. Day when my other movers bailed on me. A holiday! I get off the phone, Charlie has found a babysitter, and he and his men are at my apartment within 2 hours with little to no notice. Move-in process was a breeze. These guys are good, efficient, and extremely personable. We moved a fairly stuffed 1 bedroom in less than 3 hours. I was really impressed with the fact that Charlie is right there in the middle of the action. You know all of your stuff is being watched carefully, and you know the owner takes a lot of pride in his business when he's at the frontline. I HIGHLY recommend this company over any of the others. I've discussed several quotes with others on Thumbtak, and now know that this company's 60 mile work radius, flat rates, and professional yet personal demeanor made the moving process almost fun. I will use them again. And they will be the only moving company I recommend to others.

Despite this being the first night we are in our new house and there are hundreds of boxes I need to unpack, I feel that making this review is more important. The service we received today from Great Nation Moving, more specifically our movers was 5 STARS! These three guys went ABOVE AND BEYOND! My wife and I have moved cross country multiple times, so we have experienced many different movers and moving companies. The service we received today from these gentlemen with Great Nation Moving is by far superior to any other we have received in the past. Extremely professional, timely, efficient, and very personable. When an unexpected situation occurred, this company jumped into action and had solutions. If it weren't for them, I am sure the outcome would not have been so favorable and I cannot thank them enough! I would 100% hire Great Nation Moving in the future and highly recommend them to anyone! -Dr. Anderston and family

Jamel and his team came on time, worked very efficiently, and did the job quickly and professionally. I then asked Jamel to transfer some additional items from another location. He did this very, very well and agreed to meet me at the office on Sunday morning to move the furniture in. His terms were fair and clear. I would not hesitate to use PMS Services again.

I highly recommend these professionals. They essentially moved 2 pianos for me in 1 day, in the cold! The 2 movers arrived within their window of time to pick up the first piano from my house and dropped it off at a school. After that, they picked up another piano from a music store and moved it to my place. Very impressive Move Logic.

I was in need of an urgent move and had no option but to look for a company which would assist me with swift and immediate packing, at that point of time my friend recommended Pick Up Movers and that turned out to be the best decision I have ever made in terms of my packing need. They completely proved their metal, there was so much stuff that needed urgent movement and the task was really difficult. People who were working needed to be professionals; there was a lot of expensive stuff that needed careful handling. Lots of expensive crockery and things that were just very dear to us and we wanted that transported without any damage. To be honest I had never heard of Pick Up Movers and I thought twice before I finalised them. On my friend’s compulsion we did go ahead and just got A Class service. There was no damage, no price change and no deviation at all from the terms to what the company and we had agreed. Perfect shift at the end and that’s about it.

My two movers showed up and gave 100% the entire time they were there! Would definitely recommend this company to my friends. The only negative I have is that on Thumbtack and my responses the price states $89 and yet when I went to website is say $99. When I asked about it, I was told that the price they quoted was wrong and they still charged me the $99. They should either change the price on here or honor the price they advertised.

I ordered 4 movers but only 3 guys showed up.. However they work diligently and finished the job and they did a great job packing and organizing the truck. I was only charged the rate for 3 movers and not 4. However the movers accidentally packed my cat in a wooden trunk and put her in the truck unbeknownst to me.. It was an accident, of course. But it delayed my move 3 days trying to find my cat. One of the movers showed up on time the other 2 guys were right behind him. I had no issues with their arrival time considering I was just waking up myself. Over all they did a great job- they cat was obviously hiding and they were not aware that they packed her in the box, but would suggest being more careful moving forward.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.

How much should you tip furniture movers?

Moving furniture is hard work and potentially dangerous unless you’re properly equipped. For anyone not ready to handle their heavy oak armoire alone, professional furniture movers can safely and efficiently move your items to another room in your house or across town as needed. The national average cost to hire heavy furniture movers is $150-$200 per hour. This rate could include multiple furniture movers working as a team to move items such as beds, armoires, billiards tables, pianos, shelves, tables, entertainment centers and more. Hourly rates can vary by region. If your furniture movers have arrived on time, done a great job, kept your home and belongings protected from scratches and dings, and completed the move as planned, a tip will be greatly appreciated. Moving companies suggest approximately 10 percent of the total bill as gratuity for those doing local moving jobs, which is also a good guideline for tipping heavy furniture movers. If the total bill for heavy moving was $100 and two workers were onsite, consider giving them $10 total, or $5 each for a job well done.
