NK Movers proved to be a good choice for me. They got my boat load of boxes in in a timely matter and somehow got my heavyset mattress. I had a television which was mounted above the fireplace and NK helped with that. There was some junk which was disposed of. As I helped direct what should go where they also held nice, professional chats. It was a smooth move, no furniture damaged.

Patrick's work quality and creativity are fantastic. He created custom shelves for us in a bathroom that didn't have storage, and the result is beautiful and functional and exactly what I wanted. I also asked him at the last minute to mount our TV over the fireplace, and he came MORE than prepared, with extra cables and parts, in anticipation of getting the TV up on our plaster walls but also minimizing the appearance of the cords. He's also extremely punctual, responsive, and professional. Highest of recommendations from me, and can't wait to work with him again on our next project!

Ed is an excellent eletrician and we would highly highly recommend him based on several criteria, including but not limited to, professionalism, quality of work, affordabality, patience with all our questions and other estimates. We had him install and run new wire for a new switch and light fixture in our bathroom remodel project. We will be using Ed in the future to maintain and update our electrical amd fixtures in our 1920's home for sure.

Mr Clifton Davis did a good job on installing my 2 toilets and vanity in my bathrooms. He went above and beyond when I had purchased a solid backed vanity, which would not work with my old house pipes. He offered to come to my house to help me return the first purchase and then take the new vanity to my house for installation. This was on the second day because he also worked with my on starting the job both days at 3 pm so I didn't have to take off work. Great attention to detail and concern that everthing worked as it should. He measured for my next project. I already have plans for more work as I can afford it throughout this year. Thanks, Clifton.

J & J did a fantastic job from start to finish. They came out for an estimate to take down a half wall, remove a popcorn ceiling, install a bathroom fan, and build a small shelf, the same day I contacted them. They were available to start work quickly, made sure everything was done properly, covered everything to ensure there was less of a mess, and tidied up afterwards. Jose and his team were consistently on time (or even a bit early) and finished the job when they estimated. I really appreciated their honesty and attention to detail. I had already arranged for a different company to do some work and they helped manage the situation when those contractors did a disastrous job, even helping to fix mistakes that were not their own. They were excellent communicators and ensured there were no surprises along the way. Their prices are competitive, and their team was wonderful to work with. I would (and have already!) recommend them enthusiastically. (I have more photos to add and will upload them ASAP.)

Julio was awesome. He installed a new vanity and sink in my sons bathroom. It turned out to be more complicated than just removing the old one and putting the new one in but he stayed until the job is complete and paid very close attention to details.

Cory was a pleasure to work with on our bathroom tiling project. He did an excellent job and is very knowledgeable and hardworking. He was communicative and very friendly and went above and beyond (he cleaned up the mess from a separate project that other contractors had left, much to our surprise!). We plan to work with Cory on our next next project!

Adam Reyes did amazing work plaster repairing and painting my living room walls and bathroom ceiling. I had several long cracks in my walls that needed repair and skim coat. He and his assistant efficiently did the whole project is 8 hours and left the place spotless afterward. I highly recommend him to anyone looking for someone to do plaster work and painting. Pros 1. Job quality is good. The bathroom ceiling need some repair and doing that they spent a lot of time preparing/sanding the surface so that the outcome is spotless. 2. Attention to details. The deck is covered with stain fully. They didn't miss any corner. 3. Reasonable price. 4. Responsive. Cons 1. Communication 1.1 They are suppose to replace several cracking boards on the deck, instead they just put extra layer of stain on the whole deck to cover the cracks. Although the outcome is good, I still wish they can discuss with me beforehand. 1.2 I wish they let me know before they start some of the work so that I can remove/cover any items close to the working area, instead of end up got dusty on the stuffs. 2. Navid misunderstood my requirement to paint the whole kitchen ceiling to cover a patch, instead only touch up the patch. Having said that, I should've have read the contract carefully. Lesson learnt. 3. Although I feel what they ask is reasonable, their quote doesn't include any materials and paint. And that is not indicated on the contract (they do mention 'labor only', but that's for the deck power washing).

Michael and his team did a great job on a lot of diverse handyman needs around our house and yard (landscaping beams installed expertly, replacing a bathroom fan vent, replacing a leaky faucet, and reattaching the soap tray in our daughters bathtub). He even talked me through making some repairs myself to save some money! Incredibly grateful for the wonderful work - and already scheduling a second appointment for a few more minor repairs!

Nick did a great job dis-assembling an existing bed frame and installing a new bed. He also fixed a bathroom fan that was not operating. He’s professional, very responsive, fair, and was even considerate to work quietly with a baby napping in the house. Would hire again for Handyman needs!

Carlos renovated our whole townhouse, before we put it on the market. He did all the flooring, bathrooms, paint, carpet, and many more. It was so good to work with him. His price was the best and the quality of the work was awesome! He was always available via phone or email which was great too. I would totally work with him again. He made our move from VA to WA much easier and less stressful! Keep up the good work, Carlos!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
