We were in a jam, the sink in our bathroom at our business fell off the wall and was hanging precariously. I had tried calling several plumbers and was told they couldn't send anyone out until next week. I went on to Thumtack and submitted my request. Right away I received a response from Matt at Plumbing Professors letting me know that they could have someone here today. Their technician was out in no time, repaired the sink and reattached the plumbing. He was friendly, professional and maintained a very clean work area. He even gave me helpful suggestions to keep the other sinks from falling. I will be reaching out to them with any of our plumbing needs in the future. Thanks!

I give Tony Harris 5 Stars all the way!!! Our job was a bit more complicated than expected. Replaced a laundry room faucet that had been installed many, many years ago. There were a few "kinks" in the job itself, however, Tony was professional and very accommodating. He did an amazing job and we are very happy with the results. I will call this company for any and all of our future heating, cooling and/or plumbing needs. I HIGHLY recommend this company. Price was great! Thank you again, Tony.

I liked everything about working with SIGMA PRO PLUMBING LLC. Stress-free process. Yesterday, My leaking water heater was replaced with a new one. Horror stories I'd read online about getting a new water heater, had me nervous. But not one of those horrors occurred. I'm glad that I hired SIGMA PRO PLUMBING LLC.

Kim is what you want in a plumber. Knowledgeable, easy to schedule, on-time, and able to advise you of any concerns. Quick in his work, he's courteous, friendly and easy to converse with, taking the time after the job was complete to instruct me about the gas valve/pilot operation. Kim's prices are very reasonable; he's not looking to tack on extra 'fees'. He left his price the same despite a little extra work, and left the area clean and tidy. Most importantly, he work is top notch. Kim is the man I will call when I need any additional plumbing work in the 60 yr old house. Now if I could only find an electrician of his caliber.......

Frank was excellent. He was punctual, knew his electrical knowledge, friendly, and could handle many other handy man jobs. I would recommend him very highly. He can do any home repair including carpentry, drywall, electrical, plumbing, and even landscaping. The fact that he made an appointment and I didn't have to sit around all day waiting for him to show up was great.

Both the owner Darren and his son Daniel are enjoyable and respectful to have in your home. They call when they say and arrive on time, which is so refreshing after dealing with "no shows." They did a nice job and I will definitely rely on their services in the future, both for carpentry and painting. And, now that I remember, add plumbing to that list!

Stephen did a very good job of installing muslim showers in our two bathrooms. He was very professional. Arrived on the dot and carried out the task in pretty good time. The rate he asked for is reasonable too. The only problem we had was not able to figure out how to install wall holder of one shower so we had to find a work around. The holder loosened up after some use but I'm sure Stephen did the best he could. Would definitely recommend his services.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What are plumbers and what do they do?

Plumbers are skilled professionals who are trained to install and maintain pipes and systems for drinking water, sewage and drainage. They usually have trained through four- to five-year training programs, which include apprenticeships, via trade schools and community colleges. Plumbers’ areas of expertise typically go beyond pipes to include mathematics, blueprint reading, plumbing codes and water distribution. They handle plumbing emergencies, such as broken pipes or clogged drains, and install and maintain everything from a new piping system to a replacement faucet. Plumbers also know how to install bathtubs and showers, toilets, water heaters and dishwashers. Plumbers may work on residential or commercial sites, sometimes designing and laying out a pipe system during construction.

How long is a water heater supposed to last?

Your water heater is an essential part of your home, heating water for showers, dishwashing, laundry and more. On average, a traditional water heater will last 8-12 years. The general consensus is that it’s better to replace your water heater with a new one than to repair one that’s 10 years old or more. Older models are less energy-efficient and thus more costly to run than newer models with better technology. Here are some indicators of when it may be time to replace an old water heater instead of repairing it:

  • Leaks: If leaking is not caused by loose connections, the water may be seeping out through slight fractures in the metal of the tank that have formed over time.
  • Strange noises: Clanking, rumbling and other noises can mean that sediment has formed on the base of your tank, contributing to fissures leaks, and inefficiency.
  • Age: If it’s more than 10 years old, it’s probably time to replace.
  • Discolored or rusty water: Have a pro check it out; if the problem isn’t resolved by draining and cleaning, you’ll want to replace the heater.
  • Lack of hot water: Inconsistent heating and hot water supply that runs out too quickly likely means it’s time for a new unit.

Why is the water in my house not getting hot?

If the water in your house is not getting hot, it may be time for water heater repair. Nationally, the average water heater repair cost ranges between $120 and $200, although prices can range up to $400, depending on the problem and materials. Competent homeowners may also be able to try DIY fixes, whether they have a traditional gas or electric water heater or a tankless gas or electric heater. Troubleshooting the different issues that can arise with each of the styles requires some knowledge of how they operate and what red flags to look out for. For a natural gas water heater, the first step is to check whether the pilot light has gone out. It’s important to follow the manufacturer’s directions if you want to relight it yourself. If you smell gas, stop everything and call your gas company — the smell could signal a dangerous gas leak. If your household’s water is not getting hot enough, you can try increasing the temperature on the water heater’s front dial above the standard setting of 120 degrees; for safety, always turn off electricity to the unit before adjusting temperatures. If you keep running out of hot water, your household may simply need a higher-capacity water heater, so consider upgrading. Quick professional fixes include replacing the thermostat or heating elements and cleaning and repairing the thermocouple.

How much does it cost to install a hot water heater?

You’ll know when it’s time to install a new water heater. Water heater installation costs average between $360 and $780 nationally, with rates increasing depending on the project. The total project cost will be higher when you include the cost of the heater itself. Select your new water heater based on the number of occupants in your home and the number of gallons of capacity you’ll need. Installation costs can vary based on the type of water heater you are removing and the type you are installing, any necessary repairs, regional cost of labor, and whether disposal of the old heater is included. Natural gas water heaters retail on average between $650 and $900 for standard models. Electric water heaters range between $300 and $700 for standard models. Tankless electric water heaters retail on average between $250 and $700 for standard models. Tankless gas water heaters retail on average between $200 and $1,300.

A company may charge approximately $1,000 to replace a 50-gallon tank-style electric water heater (not including any upgrades required by building codes). Replacing a gas-powered water heater might cost $1,100 (not including code upgrades). Some companies roll the disposal of an old heater into the overall cost of the new water heater installation. Other professionals charge an additional removal fee that can range from $35 to $150.

How do you find a good plumber?

Whether you need a plumber to perform drain repair, install a new fixture, or replace rusty pipes, you need to make sure you hire someone reliable who will finish your job on time and within budget. Start by asking the plumbers on your short list these questions:

  • What is the total cost? Make sure your estimate includes materials and labor. Find out whether the plumber will be providing the materials and whether you’re being charged an hourly rate (which is variable) or a flat fee.
  • Is removal and cleanup included in the job? Some plumbers leave behind old parts, while others include the cleanup in the cost.
  • Is the work guaranteed? Find out whether the work (as well as the parts or fixtures) are guaranteed under a warranty.
