Ruth is a godsend with my dog! She knows just how to handle my shy, 75-pound rescue dog to put him at ease and give him the exercise and sniff-time he needs while I am recovering from minor surgery. He comes back exhilarated from his walks with her! Super friendly and conscientious, Ruth is someone I would trust to take care of all my pet's needs if I ever went out of town. She is THAT caring and attentive and understands the way dogs work -- even mine, who gets separation anxiety and alpha tendencies. I am so grateful to have found Ruth who clearly has a big heart for dogs and people and really wants to help where it is needed!!! Thank you SO MUCH Ruth!!!!!

I never thought to look online to choose a house/pet sitter but I am so glad I did. My experience was great and I HIGHLY recommend The Animal Train to watch your furry or feathered friends. Hannah was so responsible and I instantly trusted that she and her team would take excellent care of my cat and chickens.... and they did. I have no complaints about the care the animals received. Everything went as planned and it is so nice to leave for vacation knowing that the house and the pets are in good hands. Thank you so much!

When my regular dog sitter had to have surgery and unable to work for a couple months she recommended Peggy. She was awesome and took great care of my girls. She added a personal touch of texting me a picture of them while I was at work. I will definitely use her in the future when needed.

Hallie and Lyra took care of our 4 cats for a week. As an indication of how satisfied with their work, I have booked them for multiple trips when I need cat care in the upcoming months. Communication, before, during and after, our trip was excellent! My cats, who usually hide from cat sitters, warmed up to them so quickly! I highly recommend using them!!

Barbara Jo Matson has been walking and caring for my two Westies at noon for over two years. She not only provides amazing care for my dogs, she loves them as I do. I trust her to administer medications, monitor their health, and provide useful suggestions to improve their overall comfort, safety and health. Barbara has also been part of an in-home care team for my two Westies and my guinea pig when I have been out of town, I particularly enjoy reading Barbara's entries in the "dog-log." She always includes interesting and helpful details about the pets which keep us in clear communication. She is reliable and trustworthy. I whole-heartly recommend Barbara as an in-home pet care provider. Her service is second to none.

I wish I could do 4.5 stars. I chose 4 because communication leading up to the sit was a little mixed-up, there were last minute changes to the sitters being used, and they don't do late night potty visits, so I had to enlist a neighbor to run over and do that. However, they took wonderful care of my very elderly dog and cat. We were gone for 3 days/2 nights and with the text/photo updates I felt very reassured that they were fine. I would not hesitate to recommend them and will definitely use this service again.

    About

I have 20 years of experience as a pet sitter and a clinical social worker. Caretaking is my passion and career! I love animals and belong to the Humane Society and ASPCA organization that care for abused, neglected, and abandoned animals. I have rescued many animals on my own. I would never walk away from any animal in need. I am exceptional with animals. Most are calm with me regardless of how they behave with others. I have had friends, clients, the Huron Valley Humane Society, Planned Pethood and Midwest Rabbit Rescue and Rehome notice this. In addition, I worked as a volunteer with a rabbit rescue. I fostered and did behavior modification with bunnies who were extremely anxious and aggressive. I was the only one who could get a bunny named Noah to stop biting. He had done this for years. Within 24 hours of fostering him he never bit me or anyone else again. I did this without violence or reprimands. I do not use that kind of training. After Noah, the shelter sent me more bunnies in need of behavior modification. I am very good with sick and older pets. I had to go to a friends home daily to give medication to his Cocker Spaniel because he could not do it on his own. I am experienced in giving medications and in administering IVs. I often diagnose health issues missed by pet owners and animal rescues. I have been able to diagnose diabetes and ear issues in dogs, cats who were in pain, and bunnies who had bladder stones. I also work very well with frightened and anxiety disordered pets. I provide overnight care, walking, behavior modification, house sitting, transporting pets to appointments and taking pets to training classes. I am happy to take your dog to a dog park and help them to learn to interact with other dogs. I have cared for others' pets for 20 years and I absolutely love animals, all types and breeds. I am comfortable taking care of exotic pets, have worked with therapy dogs, and work with people who need animals to balance their lives. I will love your pets like they are my own!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to hire a house sitter?

House-sitting can be a lifesaver when you’re leaving town for any length of time. Whether you work remotely, you’re taking a much-needed vacation, or you just want to road-trip for a few days, it’s wise to have a pro keep an eye on your house and pets while you’re gone. Your home is more likely to stay safe and you won’t have to wrangle the kitty into a kennel to travel with you. The national average pet-sitting price ranges between $20 and $30. Pet-sitting and house-sitting costs will vary based on where you live in the country and regional labor rates. Another factor in cost is how long you want the house-sitter to stay. Some people prefer to have the house-sitter stay the night at their house, perhaps to care for an elderly pet or simply to keep a watchful eye on the home at all times. Overnight stays will cost more, ranging anywhere from $50 to $100, depending on services provided. For day visits, house-sitting and pet-sitting prices will increase incrementally the longer the visit and the more service you want performed. For example, a quick 10-minute visit to feed and walk the pet and bring in the mail could be $12.50, a 25-minute visit could be $18, a 40-minute visit $25, and a 50-minute visit $32. How much should you pay for a pet sitter?

Pet sitting provides your precious pet with in-home care. A pet-sitter can make a brief visit during the day to provide snacks, playtime or affection, or stay at your house for one or more nights to tend to your pet. Prices for pet-sitting will vary based on length of the visit. Nationally, pet sitting prices range from $20 to $30, although prices run higher for your sitter to stay the night. Prices will also be affected by where you live in the country. Here are some examples of average pet-sitting prices based on length of time and region:

    • 30-minute visit: $17 in a small Texas town.
    • 30-minute visit: $25 in Southern California.
      • 45-minute visit: $28.
      • 60-minute visit: $32.
    • Overnight stay (10 hours): $50 in Texas.
    • Overnight stay (10 hours): $85 in Southern California.
      • 12 hours: $100.
      • 24 hours: $200. This is a good option for a sick, elderly or brand-new pet that needs constant supervision.
