Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a house cleaner during the COVID-19 pandemic?

The best way to set up a consultation with a house cleaner during the COVID-19 pandemic is by using virtual, online tools. Start by performing an online search for local house cleaners. Message them to set up either a phone call or video call to perform a consultation. During this call, they can give you recommendations and may be able to estimate the cost of their services. Be sure to discuss whether they accept virtual payments and any precautions they can take to perform the job safely.

Can I use digital payments to pay for house cleaning?

Not only do many house cleaners accept digital payments through platforms like Zelle, PayPal, Square Cash, Google Pay, Venmo and more, but this may become more common as the COVID-19 pandemic pushes more service workers to digitize. This means you can pay your house cleaner without making physical contact or handling money.

If cleaning is absolutely essential during the current crisis, consult with the house cleaner beforehand to ensure a safe monetary transaction that complies with current government guidelines and recommendations for social distancing.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a house cleaner when social distancing?

If you hire a house cleaner to clean the inside of your home, do not make physical contact. Stay at least 6 feet apart at all times, sanitize any surfaces after cleaning and wash your hands thoroughly. Exchange all payments digitally instead of with cash. When contacting a house cleaner, put a plan in place to ensure everyone's safety.

How can I find out if a house cleaner is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

A house cleaner is generally not considered an essential service sector during the coronavirus pandemic. To find out which services are considered essential, visit your city and state government, and read their guidelines. A national list of essential service providers can be found on CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 site. This webpage lists 16 different infrastructure sectors considered to be essential. However, not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Does a house cleaner need to enter my home?

Yes, in almost all cases a house cleaner needs to enter your home. However, a cleaner may not need to enter your home if they are solely cleaning outside areas.

There may be some cases in which a cleaner is necessary. If so, take precautions — avoid being in the same room, make no physical contact, sanitize any surfaces and pay through a digital service instead of using cash.

Do house cleaners offer remote or virtual services?

House cleaning is generally done in person, but some may be willing to offer remote services. If you find a house cleaner’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, contact the pro to talk about your options.

If you’d rather hire a house cleaner to clean your home when the pandemic is over, you may be able to book an appointment at a later date. Start by comparing local house cleaners in your area side-by-side.

Should I hire a move-out cleaning service or do it myself?

You may benefit from hiring a professional move-out cleaning service, depending on your budget, time frame and whether you will be getting a deposit back. Hiring a cleaning service takes the stress out of your move. But if you’ve had your house regularly deep-cleaned, or if your landlord will charge you for cleaning anyway, you can save costs by DIY-ing it.

How long does it take to clean a house professionally?

Generally, getting your house cleaned professionally can take several hours. The time it takes for house cleaners to complete their job depends on the size of your home, the number of bedrooms and bathrooms you have, the type of service you require and the condition of your house. It also might depend on how many employees are cleaning and the supplies they are using. If you get recurring cleaning services, the first visit might take a bit longer than the subsequent visits.

When choosing the best house cleaner for you, ask for an estimate about how long their services will take.

How much is a house cleaning?

The national average cost for house cleaning ranges between $25 and $50 per hour, per cleaner. However, the cost of house cleaning services near you might be different.

House cleaning prices vary based on how many square feet your home is, how dirty your house gets and how often the cleaning service comes. And, prices can be lower in areas with a lower cost of living, higher in big cities or affluent regions.

Some companies charge a set amount — such as 5 cents — per square foot, with a minimum amount, such as $100. You may save money by increasing the frequency of your house cleaning visits. Often a company will charge you less per cleaning when you schedule more cleanings per month. The cost advantage rewards your loyalty, and also reflects the fact that more frequent cleanings make it easier to maintain a high level of cleanliness in your home. A housecleaning service may charge more for the first visit or for one-time services than for recurring cleanings.

How much does it cost to deep clean a house?

Deep cleaning a house goes beyond the surface level to clear out the dust, grime and gunk that’s collecting on the fan blades, hiding in the blinds, and built up inside the refrigerator drawers. Deep cleaning of a home or apartment costs more than regular house cleaning because it takes more time, effort, and cleaning products. You may choose to have a deep cleaning once or several times a year in addition to your standard cleaning services. You may have a one-time deep cleaning to prepare for company or to clean after a house party. Companies may charge an hourly rate or a price per square foot, or may offer you a flat rate after they have visited your home and estimated work time. The national average house cleaning price is $110-$150, with rates ranging higher for deep-cleaning services. Here are some examples of how a company may calculate their deep-cleaning prices:

  • 10 cents per square foot (compared with 5 cents per square foot for standard house cleaning).
  • $300 for a 3,000-square-foot home.
  • $25 per hour per worker for deep-cleaning services.

Ginger was phenomenal with getting my house cleaned after I moved out. Some furniture hadn’t been moved in 15 years so you can imagine the filth on the hardwood floors. These wire shelves in the closet were filthy and she was able to get them looking like new again. The new owner was very pleased with how it looked and thankful that I had it done. Ginger is very friendly and even helped load my car with plants before she started cleaning. I highly recommend her.

Let me preface this review with we have recently had remodeling done to our home and there was drywall dust "everywhere" because the contractor failed to put up barriers. So we requested a "deep clean" service. I am very selective on keeping a clean house and have had some health concerns forcing me to ask for help. In my opinion, we got some areas cleaned deeply, others were "breezed" over. Fred (owner) was very responsive with communications and requests. He used this app a lot to communicate with and I finally requested he call me as texting back and forth gets tedious when details are trying to be laid out. They did text when they were getting close and when they arrived I showed him what needed to be done and with his partner, they separated and began to work. I tried to stay out of their way. They brought all their own equipment. Fred came in with neatly pressed pants and shirt, his partner wasn't as fixed on those details, and unfortunately I honed right in on that. I respected a tidy ironed uniform, having worn one for almost 30 years. When a uniform is well cared for, ironed and professional, it represents that person is also professional and has attention to detail. I was a bit wrong. They used a Swiffer type mop (which I loathe as it smears floors with solution and dirt, never truly rinsing and cleaning with fresh water). So while my floors look clean, I'm sure if I skate on them with white socks, I'm going to be grossed out. They used a power drill with a wide bristle brush to clean showers and bathtubs. I loved this as we had some scale build up on our fiberglass equipment. But then the other fixtures they left hard water scale buildup around the sink faucets, which I was expecting to be deep cleaned and removed. So a bit of a disappointment there. I showed Fred's partner a specific wall hanging candelabra that had been covered in drywall dust and wanted that cleaned and he left it without so much as a vacuum to it. The same goes for the light switch plates and outlet covers. They all had drywall dust just on the tops of them. A quick wipe would have removed both the dust issues as well as the obvious fingerprints on the switch plates. I had to clean these after they left. Interior windows were not cleaned. Some of my windows are casement windows and so the screens are inside the house. I would have been OK skipping those, but I did specifically point out the windows with "dog nose prints" and again, in one ear, out the next. I cleaned them after they left so my wife wouldn't see those. Overall, average expectations were met, but above average hopes were not. They were in the house about two hours and while pleasant and easy going, I don't think I'll have them back.

I was so disappointed! They came to my home to give quote after we set a meeting. Provided a quote and we agreed on cleaning date. Two days later they texted and canceled their services due to the distance to my house from their location. How did they not know this would be a problem when... 1. They scheduled our first meeting 2. They visited my home in person Highly unprofessional to do! I have waisted my Saturday morning waiting for them and canceled other companies for quotes as we have agreed on a cleaning date. I would not recommend them if you want reliable people to work for you. They came late to our first meeting and then canceled with no notice for distance. If they cannot stick to their initial commitment how will you trust them with your home?
