Who can fix my computer?

If your computer needs repairs, hire a technician who has experience with your computer’s model and brand. Ideally, the pro you choose should have certifications, training and/or a degree in a related field.

Look for top-rated, qualified computer repair services in your area on Thumbtack.

Is it worth replacing the motherboard on a laptop?

If your laptop’s motherboard was damaged by physical impact, liquid, heat or electrical damage, you may need to replace it or buy a new computer. You should consult computer repair experts near you to determine if replacing your laptop’s motherboard is worth the cost. Compare the price quotes you receive with new laptop prices, and decide which option is the most cost-effective.

What should I do before sending a computer in for repairs?

Before you send your computer to a technician to fix it, take the following precautions:

  • Make sure you hire a reputable, top-rated professional to handle the repairs. Look at past photos of work they’ve completed and read their customer reviews on Thumbtack.
  • Back-up your data. To ensure you don’t lose the data on your computer, back-up your files to an external hard drive.
  • Ensure you have access to important information. If you need to access certain files or information from your computer, make sure you can access that information through a cloud storage system or external drive.
  • Erase sensitive information. If you have files (documents, photos, etc.) that contain sensitive information about your finances, accounts, passwords, etc., delete them before you bring your computer to a repair shop.
  • Log out of your accounts. Make sure you’re logged out of your bank, social media and other accounts.

Is it cheaper to replace a hard drive or buy a new computer?

Buying a new hard drive is almost always cheaper than buying a new computer. If you suspect you need to upgrade or replace your hard drive, ask a computer technician to diagnose your device (and request a cost estimate if the culprit is indeed the hard drive).

Is it worth fixing a computer?

It depends. If the damage is severe, you might be better off buying a new computer than spending hundreds (or thousands) of dollars on repairs. Always get price quotes from a few computer repair services near you, and compare those estimates to desktop and laptop prices. If it's cheaper to fix your computer,  consider doing so. But if it's cheaper to buy a new device, that's probably your best option.

Should I repair or replace my computer?

To determine if you should replace or repair your computer, consider the following:

  • Has your warranty expired?
  • Is your computer old and out of date?
  • Is the cost to fix your computer 50% or more of the cost of replacing it?
  • Before it broke, was your computer working slowly and inefficiently?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, it’s probably time to replace your computer. When in doubt, consult a technician for their expert opinion.

How many years does a laptop last?

Depending on its quality, age, condition and maintenance, a laptop may last only a few years or up to seven years. Of course, your laptop may last longer or shorter depending on how well you take care of it. If you think your laptop needs repairs, don’t procrastinate — hire a technician to look at it before the damage becomes irreparable.

Amir is quick to reply. He did a free diagnosis for me on my desktop for a hard drive issue. A replacement was required and he researched them. Dell offered me a repair deal and Amir simply gave the computer back, no questions asked. I'll be using him again if I need something done in the future.

I had an issue with my desktop computer. I had somehow corrupted windows 10 and the computer would not boot up. Since being locked down because of the corona virus situation I turned to google to figure out how to repair my system. I happened upon Thumbtack and Pellescom and decided to send a message...Rami responded several minutes later and asked my to explain my problem...I gave him my phone number and he immediately contacted me. We then started a Skype call and he explained what he believed the issue was and what we needed to do to fix it. I was also adding a new SSD drive for the operating system and was concerned about losing data from the 2TB hardrive...Rami set my mind at ease and we scheduled a time a couple days out to give me time to gather an SSD and SATA cable from Amazon. I got back with Rami via Skype and he walked me through the entire process. He had visual aids and encouraging words throughout the process. He made suggestions on how to best organize my system and taught me much during our time together. He is a Pro. He is not just the technician that got me up and running again...I would call him my friend! The absolute BEST customer service I have ever received in my 59 years on this earth!! I will recommend his services to everyone I know and anyone who has computer issues. I have dealt with others in the past with varying results but never have I had such great personal service. I am so glad to have met Rami, He made my day and not just because he fixed my computer.

My 8 year old desktop computer crashed a couple of weeks ago and I decided to research a local repair service through my phone. I was led to the Thumbtack site and received two immediate responses. John from RapidByte Tech followed up several times after an initial email and offered his phone number and a consultation. After several emails and conversations we both came to the conclusion that my motherboard had “given up the proverbial ghost”. I told John I did not want to spend more that $200 as I had looked at a couple of refurbished units. John offered to look into a replacement board and upon writing me back concluded that due to the age of my current CPU and my budget it made sense to go with the refurbished unit and even sent me a couple of recommended links to a couple of suppliers. Being a senior, I must admit I was wary of “free” advice....fortunately I was delighted with his recommendations. I am writing this review on my new computer (with double the memory, twice the processing speed, the same hard-drive so I was able to transfer my old data, all under my budget). I highly recommend John and RapidByte Tech to anyone (particularly seniors)! John is professional, knowledgeable, courteous, keeps his word and most important is an honest man...Thanks John! David L.
