Mike was very helpful and willing to jump in and provide some last minute SAT Test prep and tutoring for my daughter's second time taking the test. Mike helped her with her weak points (Math) as well as general test taking strategies. Her confidence was higher going into the second test after Mike's help. He was thorough and knowledgeable.

I am very content to find Kate as my math tutor. She's very organized and knows how to explain the math problems thoroughly, even though it took me like 5 times to understand the question or equation :( (I'm not a math person). She prepared me for my math placement test in college and I was able to advance at a higher math class. I am very happy with my results. Kate was simply great and very patient with me. I truly recommend her if you are struggling in math.

My sister and I had Mrs.Griswold for ACT English and Reading tutoring. She met with us every Saturday at my our home for hourlong sessions. From my time with her I have learned many things, Mrs.Griswold is an excellent teacher. I felt that learning with her was not a hassle or struggle, and that she allowed me to progress naturally and comfortably. She has a very kind and light-hearted personality and is very easy to work with. I would recommend Mrs.Griswold to anyone who is looking to understand the material, recognize patterns, and score highly on the test without all of the stress usually associated.

We've had just 2 tutoring sessions for pre-calc so far, but my son just took a test at school and said he finally KNEW the material, including bonus questions. Bennett has been easy to work with and has been able to explain and teach the subject matter so that my son gets it. We look forward to continuing to work with him.

I love reviewing my math with Mrs. Raj. I always go the day before I have a test and we go over everything I need to know. She makes you do problems until she knows that you understand. I always feel very prepared when for my next test when I walk out of her house. I would really recommend her to people because I have had other math tutors before and they just do not compare to Mrs. Raj.

Jatin worked with my daughter for only a few weeks prior to the SAT focusing mainly on her greatest area of need --the math sections. The tips and practice information provided a good foundation for my daughter to go into the test with confidence resulting in a score increase of 250 in math section. We will contact him again prior to the next test.

My 15 year old son is being tutored for Algebra 2. He went very unwillingly to the first session. He is eager for the next. Mr. Abron engaged him and gave him insight into why things were not working out for him. INSTANT CONFIDENCE! It also helped that he was nice, patient, smiling, and extremely knowledgeable about the content. He provided resources that the school was not providing and gave us a game plan that will carry him through the school week. Besides all of that, he strikes me as a wonderful, caring person to whom my son will make a stronger connection. Nurturing and fatherly conversation. Very, very satisfied!

I wanted to write in support of Brad Kelly in teaching my son the skills needed to improve his scores on the SAT. My son has a 95+ average in high school, taking predominantly honors and AP courses. His knowledge base and understanding of material for tests is impressive. However, the SAT is not about what you know, but about applying test taking skills that are not routinely used in everyday high school classes or even AP/IB exams. Despite his knowledge base and baseline test taking skills, with a simple 6 week course and his own efforts, he was only able to achieve a 1330 on his first SAT attempt. We then approached a test prep provider where we live, and were connected with Brad Kelly. Brad spent five 2 hour sessions with my son developing the skills necessary and the confidence in those skills for the June 2017 administration of the SAT. On this test his scores increase to a 1470, 780 in Math and 690 in Verbal. I would highly recommend Brad to assist your student in developing the necessary test taking skills to improve their performance on the SAT or ACT, a major factor in entry into the academic school of their choice.

Christine Kalcic was instrumental to my success at MSU as a premed student. She proved to be an asset to my success during my first semester, and I continued to work with her throughout the rest of my coursework. She is proficient in multiple subjects, and is excellent at breaking down material and getting you caught back up when behind. Christine was invaluable for exam prep and taught the material to truly understand it, not just to pass. Working with her taught me time management and how to approach very complex material and a tough course load. I truly feel very lucky and fortunate to have worked with her. I have recommended her to multiple students of various age, and she has done an excellent job with everyone. There is no way I could have taken on the course load I did without Christine, she is brilliant and just a really awesome and kind person!

About

At Schollegiate, we are confident that there’s a school for everyone — and we work to help students find that school. We help them make sense of their aspirations, dreams, and academic and extracurricular interests, and we help them find the schools that make for good matches. And when the match — or in most cases, matches — has been made, we make sure students craft applications that speak to their “fit” on that specific campus; that illustrate why they merit strong consideration.

About

Our school is different from all the other tutoring schools because it creates Individual Learning Plans for each student. Students do not have to waste time traveling. All of the materials are uploaded into the virtual classroom. Students do not need books or notebooks. They have a dashboard for their assignments. Students receive and ID and password, which they can use to log into their accounts and to the assignments. Once the students have enrolled into one of our programs they receive a troubleshooting lesson. Our IT team is always prepared to assist with all the questions and challenges. Students can contact us anytime.

About

Hello! My name is James Mandilk, and I am a recent graduate from a local high school, Walled Lake Central, and a current student at Yale University. I was fortunate to earn a perfect score on the ACT as a junior (36 Composite + 12 Writing), and now I'm providing other students with both the knowledge and the strategies they need to succeed on the ACT. Ivy Insiders is a different kind of test prep company: - Ivy Insiders students increase their ACT score by 4.4 points on average - that's double the results of most test prep companies. - Our instructors score in the 99th percentile, rather than in the 90th. Moreover, since most applicants are Ivy League undergraduates who have impressive ACT scores already and those with the best mentoring abilities can be selected from a pool of many qualified individuals. - Our curriculum is revolutionary: we believe that the ACT is not a test of "intelligence" or "aptitude," but of concrete skills that can be improved through practice. Since the ACT is a standardized exams, strategies that succeeded before will still succeed today. - Ivy Insiders is also a socially responsible company, offering scholarships to those in need to ensure that test prep is available for everyone. I am offering free events, private tutoring and classroom courses this summer. Full course information is available on my website, and you may receive $100 off if you use code MI4TT. Thank you for taking the initiative to invest in your future! James Mandilk, Yale College

About

We help parents and students understand and master the new SAT, focusing on what's different and the way to practice for the test based on how much time the student has to prepare. Each student takes a complete practice test from which is created a PPA (personal plan of action). We provide tips for getting teachers involved and referrals for one-on-one tutoring, use games to make skill mastery fun and challenging and place students in online study groups to motivate and encourage each learner. At the end of the session, a post test is given, along with an updated study plan for continued review of the weak skills up until the test date. Options for learning include the following: * Online * In a Classroom Setting * At Your Home * A combination of two or more of the above, for maximum SAT score gains

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you study for the SAT?

Your SAT prep strategy can mean the difference between a great score and a mediocre score, as well as the difference between being accepted to or rejected by your school of choice. The Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) is a college entrance exam that measures a student’s knowledge and understanding of what they have learned up to this point in school and what they need to succeed in college. In addition to arming students with the knowledge they need to excel in the math, reading and writing components of the test, SAT prep can help improve scores by teaching students crucial strategies for taking the test itself. Professional SAT prep tutors can work with students one-on-one or in group sessions. Typically, tutors recommend that students who are comfortable and caught up with their regular schooling begin SAT prep at least three months before the test. If you’re targeting an elite school, six months before the test is a good time to begin. Students who are behind in school are advised to start early to ensure they’re caught up and feeling confident in all the relevant subjects. Suggestions for long-term SAT prep include taking challenging high school courses, completing all homework assignments, preparing for class tests and quizzes, and participating in class by asking and answering questions. There are free SAT prep training tools online; for those who’d like a one-on-one tutor to take them to the next level, the national average rate is $70 per hour.

How do I prepare for the GMAT?

If you’re thinking of enrolling in graduate school to earn your MBA, it’s time to start thinking about preparing for the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT). Working with a GMAT tutor is for many people a wise investment to help you strengthen the academic areas you may be weak in and improving your overall test score. A GMAT prep tutor should teach you not only the kind of information you need to know for the test, but the best test-taking strategies. The GMAT tests you on four categories: quantitative, verbal, integrated reasoning, and an analytical writing assessment. Cramming is probably not going to give you good results for this standardized test; give yourself between two and six months to prepare, focusing on your most challenging areas first. Successful GMAT prep means planning ahead and studying thoroughly. Those students who reported studying under 75 hours were more likely to score 400 or lower on the test, while students who studied 121 hours or more were more likely to score 700 or higher on the test. Hiring a GMAT prep tutor can range in price from under $50 to over $200 per hour.

What is ACT test prep?

The ACT is a college entrance exam taken by students (typically in their junior year of high school) to determine admission eligibility and merit-based scholarship eligibility. The test may be taken as many times as desired and is not limited to high school juniors. Originally the acronym stood for American College Testing, but now ACT is the stand-alone name. ACT prep is a way for students to strategically prepare for test-taking. ACT prep helps students improve scores, practice taking the test, learn test-taking strategies, and improve material comprehension. Students can get help with ACT prep tutors in one-on-one sessions, via group tutoring lessons, in online self-study programs, or online with a tutor in video calls. The ACT test covers:

  • English
  • Science understanding and reasoning
  • Math
  • Reading
  • Writing essay (optional)

How do you prepare for the ACT?

The ACT is a universally accepted college readiness exam. There are multiple ways to prepare for the exam. One-on-one ACT prep tutoring is one of the most effective ways for students to ready themselves for the test. A tutor who specializes in ACT prep will coach the student on the type of material they can expect while also working specifically with topics that are more challenging for that particular student. Group tutoring sessions are a more cost-effective way to reap the benefits of an ACT prep instructor; a suggestion is to gather a group of four friends or classmates to share the cost. Professional tutors often recommend that test prep begin approximately three months prior to the exam. Cramming — unfortunately — doesn’t provide the same score results as consistent study, test-related homework, and practice exams do. Weekly two-hour learning sessions are what many pro tutors suggest for their college exam prep students. For top test-taking performance, tutors usually provide work throughout the week and the weekly session is used to cement knowledge and address weak areas. Math is a hard topic for most students, so plan accordingly.

How long does it take to prepare for the GMAT?

Pros recommend planning to spend two to six months for GMAT prep. The test itself is only 3.5 hours long, but your score will have a major effect on what schools grant you admission. If you’d like to be considered for one of the top-tier schools, it’s recommended to score at least a 700. Your goals for your MBA can help drive your GMAT prep. GMAT tutors will guide your study plan and help analyze your strengths and weaknesses. GMAT tutors also offer professional guidance and insights on strategic GMAT test-taking. Avail yourself of free GMAT prep software that provides sample test questions for you to practice. The creators of the GMAT recommend creating a structured study plan detailing when you will study each day and what topics you will study during each session. Take into account what style of learning works best for you (solo study, one-on-one tutoring, group tutoring, study groups, prep courses) and proceed accordingly. The test is made up of these four categories, each with an allotted time:

  • Analytical writing assessment: 1 topic, 30 minutes.
  • Integrated reasoning: 12 questions, 30 minutes.
  • Quantitative: 37 questions, 75 minutes.
  • Verbal: 41 questions: 75 minutes.
