After several landscape companies failed to quote or respond within a reasonable time period, it was refreshing to have Tom Gray respond within minutes, come out and offer an estimate right there on the spot. His crew came out the very next day and knocked out everything I wanted within a 6 hour period. The results were beautiful and I cant thank him enough. Really thought this was going to go on for months on end before we ever got the results we wanted. Tom has a great crew of guys who work with him, his rates are competitive and his suggestions are spot on. Our landscaping looks GORGEOUS! When we need the trees pruned we will definitely use you. Thanks again, Mary Pageau

Quick to quote work and schedule. Super detailed and beautiful results with a challenging yard that was not regularly maintained by owner. We will definitely be hiring Greater Greens Lawn Care for our future lawn and landscape maintenance and projects. Thank you so much!

After reviewing three contractors, I went with Nicholas and Anthony, his tile guy. He did an amazing job! Anthony was a pure perfectionist and neat in his work and gave me exactly the look I wanted for a backsplash and fireplace surround. Oh yeah, he sanded some windows and repainted the trim. Windows look brand new!! Will definetly use ADRM again for other jobs I need done around the house in the near future! The price wasn't the cheapest, but wasn't the most expensive either. Nicholas gave me a fair price for great work, what more can you ask for?

Needed areas of grass patched. Superior did a great job and even patched some additional areas they noticed were in trouble. Also trimmed some dead tree branches and added mulch to some existing landscaping. They were great and fast.

I was looking for someone to repair a slate walkway in my backyard that had been partially pulled up for some underground repair work .. not exactly a standard job for a landscape company. ZLM assured me their team had the experience to do a good job with this slate, and they were true to their word. The finished job looks even better than when it was new. The crew was friendly and hard-working, and I do highly recommend ZLM Services!

Hector and his crew replaced the front half of my double drive which had been badly cracked and had sunken in. I had five contractors bid the job. Hector's knowledge and quality of materials was up there with the highest price contractors but he was able to beat their bids slightly. What really set him over the top that no one else did was that he offered to fill a large depression in the lawn next to the driveway as well for no extra charge. Maybe it's a little thing, but it shows his commitment to excellence. The driveway looks great.

If I could I would give vintage landscape 10 stars I would. Derrek was very professional but down to earth. Derrek and his employees did a excellent job. They started the job and finished just as promised. They cleaned up every night before leaving. They went above and beyond all of our exoations. I highly recommend vintage landscaping. You won't be disappointed at all. Such a great company from the owner Derrek, supervisor Nick and all their employees.

So far their work has been excellent. The worker actually got off the tractor and used a weed wacker. Our previous contractor damaged the building and property driving the tractor too close to objects.

I needed guidance redesigning our front yard landscape. Jessica listened to my wants and obstacles (deer) and carefully designed a plan that included all the plants I love, while introducing me to new things as well. Her design incorporated items we already had, which helped our budget. Her plan was comprehensive, including a detailed plant list and soil instructions. We will definitely hire her again when we tackle the backyard.

Stafford Landscaping has been a great company to have for all of our landscaping needs. We called them when our mower broke down and they were able to be out here the next day, they've been taking care of our lawn maintenance, weed control and our landscaping projects. With their rates being competitive and the owner Dave having a great sense of customer service and being so helpful, my lawn has never looked better. I recommend them to anyone looking for a lawn maintenance company or landscape design.

Valuable creative ideas in the design and placement of our patio. My wife loves the low maintenance landscape applied. The choice colorful shrubbery lightens up our yard. They completed our project and cleanup within the agreed timeline. My wife already has a desire to ask them back for front yard ideas. We have recommended them to friends and family.

We had a massively over grown yard in the middle of the spring cleanup season. The automated emails for responses on quotes became a bit redundant but that did not in the least take away from the work this team did, in the middle of a vacation myself and the initial person I talked to went on a vacation, the team still managed to get the work done in a super efficient manner. More importantly they had ample opportunity to upsell and take me for a bit of money by doing a half way job on particularly some reseeding. Instead they advised me against paying them extra to do a job that wouldn’t have been right, they thought of ME instead of THEIR wallet, that says a lot these days. Great job guys and good luck.

He turned my blotchy thick grass into a beautiful nicely stripped lawn. I was overall pleased he went above and beyond even gave tips that worked. I was amazed at the pretty lawn stripes he left I mean they were on point. I was overly satisfied.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
