To find a cheap or affordable DJ for your party or wedding, search for local DJs near you and ask for free cost estimates from several of them. While some DJ profiles may provide an automatically generated starting cost, it’s important to contact the DJ to get an idea of how much your particular request will cost. This also gives you the opportunity to ask them other important questions and make sure you are a good fit.
When you hire a local DJ, expect to pay roughly between $300 and $800. But be aware that the actual price will vary based on several factors, including the length of the DJ’s set and how much of a presence they need to be. Larger venues can drive up the cost, as this requires more equipment, soundchecking and setup. Adding extras like confetti, fog, light shows and black lights also adds to the cost.
Get cost estimates from the best DJs near you to find out how much you should expect to spend for your event.
To book a party DJ, start by comparing local pros in your area. Check out their ratings and reviews to find out:
Are they professional?
Do they show up on time to set up for the party?
Do they know how to feel the energy in the room and adjust the music accordingly?
Are they friendly to guests and take song requests?
Do they specialize in the genres you want (pop, Top 40, hip-hop, etc.)?
Do they have experience playing at your type of event (weddings, birthday parties, etc.)?
Whenever possible, watch videos of their performances.
Your last step is to contact three to five different DJs near you to ask them questions and get price quotes.

Excellent job!!!!DJ Daniel is definitely one of the best. This was my first experience hiring a DJ through Thumbtack. I needed a DJ for my mom’s 60th Birthday celebration. He was professional, punctual, responsive and granted request from our guest. I would definitely work with him again!!

Drew, aka DJ NorStarr, was great to work with. He was very punctual and professional in everything from responding to questions, getting contracts signed and sent out, to the day of our event. We hired him to perform as DJ for our wedding and he was able to play the ceremony music as well as DJ the reception, which helped a lot. He also was really great about helping us keep the reception running smoothly and on time. As the bride and groom with no wedding coordinator, we would have definitely missed some of the key reception moments if Drew hadn't helped us stay on track. We had several very enthusiastic kids at the reception and Drew was great about handling their requests (and verifying with us that we were cool with playing "Baby Shark" at the reception, haha). Everything went wonderfully and we would definitely recommend DJ NorStarr for any event. Thank you again for everything!

DJ Spud was an absolute pleasure to work with. He put together a great playlist for my event and the guests were really happy. Would book again in a heartbeat.

Toni was the DJ at our university's pregame reception before a bowl game at Ford Field in Detroit. He was fantastic to work with. A true professional. I'd highly recommend him!
Awesome job. Kept the party going even stayed an extended period of time because he had the party so hype. Will be booking Dj Bigg Smooth again
DJ BIGG SMOOVE THE WEDDING AND COOPERATE PARTY DJ
After reading the many rave reviews, my daughter and I considered Phat Music as a DJ for her October 2014 wedding. When we talked with Reginald, he informed us he had a conflict for the date, but another DJ would provide the services. He assured us it would be no problem compiling a playlist of the music genres we requestedChristian and 70s R & B. As a result, my daughter and her fiancée contracted with the company in April, 2014. In a nutshell, the DJ services at my daughters wedding were HORRIBLE. Listing everything that went wrong would be too much, but I will say I dont believe the DJ had ever been to a wedding, let alone DJd one. He was a very nice and respectful man, but he had no clue as to the type of music we requested. Thus, he was totally unprepared. I could not and still dont understand why he was unprepared since we had told Reginald months ago the type of music we wanted. I, the wedding coordinator and certain others were constantly advising him on the songs/artists to play. This is not what we wanted to be doing during the reception. After a while, we just gave up and for a good part of the reception my daughter and I had no idea what music he was playing. Afterward, he apologized and said he usually just DJs clubs, not weddings. That explained a lotespecially his handling of the reception itself, i.e. announcing the throwing of the garter, etc. He was really clueless regarding what to do. What made matters worse is through several emails we exchanged afterward, Reginald never took responsibility for what happened. He told me it was hard for him to determine what went wrong (seriously?), but the DJ would never work for them again. Thats nice, but no consolation for us since this once-in-a -lifetime event was over. Actually, between this and what the DJ said, it seemed like he just picked someone expendable off the street to DJ the reception without considering if the person was really qualified.
The music, and at times, the lack thereof, as well as his poorly performed announcing duties, negatively affected the entire atmosphere. As a result, it was extremely stressful for my daughter and I. At some point in our email exchange, Reginald blamed my daughter and son-in-law for the DJs poor performance. He had wanted them to meet with the DJ two weeks before the wedding. They told him there were unable to do that, and Reginald said it wasnt a big deal. Of course we didnt think it was a big deal either because we thought the music would have already been selected by then. The DJ told us at the reception that Reginald never met with him or conveyed the information about the requested music. When I told him we wanted gospel and 70s R & B, the DJ actually said, The 70s is before my time. What? It really shouldnt have mattered; there had been plenty time to research.
Even though in the beginning we felt justified in receiving a full refund, we didnt ask for it. We really just wanted Reginald to explain what went wrong and admit he or someone at Phat dropped the ball in more than one way. But that never happened. Initially, Reginald apologized and offered to buy dinner for my daughter and her husband. We didnt even respond to that because clearly he didnt understand how wrong it went. Eventually he offered a refund of a third of the fee (which I might have considered), but by that time, he hadnt addressed the questions I had about what might have gone wrong, and had shifted the blame to the bride and groom, which was not only a misplacement of fault, but terribly unprofessional. So we requested a full refund. I havent heard from Reginald since, and that was weeks ago. Id like to let it go, but its not right they took our money, provided extremely poor service, and took no responsibility.
Reginald was very nice and was prompt in responding to us before the wedding. But something went very wrong. We paid Phat to come up with the music, so we wouldnt have to and gave them the information they needed way ahead of time to do that. At the very least, they couldve contracted a DJ who knew how to DJ a reception. We are very disappointed.

Don did a great job. He made sure that right vibe was going on during our wedding night. He was very responsive to all of our DJ needs, including a list of songs we needed for the event. Great job!
We hired Toni last minute this June because our DJ backed out do to the epidemic going on. Toni was super responsive, friendly and well priced for the service type we were looking for. We can't wait to have him at the wedding!
We hired DJ Bigg Smoove for a big party at our co-op. He arrived early to set up, played great music all night, was friendly, relaxed and professional, and charged a very reasonable rate. I highly recommend him.
DJ BIGG SMOOVE THE WEDDING AND COOPERATE PARTY DJ
If your looking for a DJ for your event, this is your guy. He professional, respectful and punctual. Also he’s great at what he does!!! I hired him last minute for a 65th bday, an I’m glad I did! I would hire him again anytime! Thanks again 🙃
We had a great experience with Toni as our wedding DJ! Our venue space at the Detroit Historical Museum was oddly laid-out and could have presented difficulties, but Toni rolled with it and was very professional.
We appreciated that he was enthusiastic, but not cheesy.
Cheesy wedding DJs are the worst!
Toni was very communicative before and during the wedding. He responded promptly to emails and texts. In hindsight I would have provided better guidance for the playlist ahead of time. There were a couple awkward moments in the beginning, but Toni picked up on the vibe of our guests and everyone had a great time. We had a good crowd on the dance floor until we had to start shutting down.
Thank you Toni!
Searching for a DJ for a wedding when you live out of state can be a daunting task. Doing it with a three hour time zone difference even more so, but Phat Music Entertainment made everything easy! I informed Reginald Brady of all the details of the wedding and what we as a couple were looking for. His response time was always prompt, informative and as detailed as possible. He sent us a link to a "demo" and my then fiancee and I were sold. I was able to meet with Reginald in person a few weeks before the wedding and his personality meshed perfectly with mine and my parents. He was prompt efficient kept the music flowing and an absolute professional. We couldn't have been more pleased. If anyone is looking for a great DJ for any event in the Detroit area, do not hesitate to call on Phat Music Entertainment!

He was PERFECT! He exceeded our expectations.. I will NEVER hire another DJ unless it is him. He was on time, fulfilled all of our requests throughout the night, played all of our special songs throughout the night, and was just awesome! He is so great for what he does. Kept all the music clean while the older folks was there, but let us young folks turn up later in the evening.
Getting married through the crazy year of 2020 was an up and down roller coaster, but one constant throughout all of it was Tomas and Claire's unwavering commitment to our wedding. Their excitement, and communication leading into our big day was a bright spot among the many issues we had going into our wedding, and their execution on-site was A+. I would recommend Tomas and Claire for any and all of your DJ/MCing needs, as they truly were fantastic to work with.
Great people doing great work at a very reasonable price. We could not imagine our wedding day without these two. We were very satisfied with everything from their charismatic customer service, their organization, communication, and then on-site execution and overall great attitude.
