Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Do house cleaners offer remote or virtual services?

House cleaning is generally done in person, but some may be willing to offer remote services. If you find a house cleaner’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, contact the pro to talk about your options.

If you’d rather hire a house cleaner to clean your home when the pandemic is over, you may be able to book an appointment at a later date. Start by comparing local house cleaners in your area side-by-side.

How much does it cost to deep clean a house?

Deep cleaning a house goes beyond the surface level to clear out the dust, grime and gunk that’s collecting on the fan blades, hiding in the blinds, and built up inside the refrigerator drawers. Deep cleaning of a home or apartment costs more than regular house cleaning because it takes more time, effort, and cleaning products. You may choose to have a deep cleaning once or several times a year in addition to your standard cleaning services. You may have a one-time deep cleaning to prepare for company or to clean after a house party. Companies may charge an hourly rate or a price per square foot, or may offer you a flat rate after they have visited your home and estimated work time. The national average house cleaning price is $110-$150, with rates ranging higher for deep-cleaning services. Here are some examples of how a company may calculate their deep-cleaning prices:

  • 10 cents per square foot (compared with 5 cents per square foot for standard house cleaning).
  • $300 for a 3,000-square-foot home.
  • $25 per hour per worker for deep-cleaning services.

What should I ask a house cleaner or maid before hiring them?

There are many questions to ask a cleaning service before you hire them to make sure they’re the right fit. These questions might include:

  • How much do you charge?
  • How do you set your prices -- per hour or per square foot? Or, do you charge a flat rate?
  • What is your past work experience? Can I see a list of references?
  • Are you accustomed to working with different home or apartment types and sizes?
  • Can you work with children or pets in the house?
  • What types of cleaning products do you use?
  • Do you bring your own cleaning supplies and products?
  • How often can you clean my home?
  • Is there anything you recommend I do (or don't do) to my home before you arrive?

What is included in a deep house cleaning vs. a basic house cleaning?

A basic house cleaning typically includes tasks like carpet cleaning, wiping countertops, taking out the trash, doing the laundry and washing dishes. A deep house cleaning is a much more involved process, where all aspects of the home are given full attention for a cleanout. In a deep house cleaning, the cleaners will wet-wipe everything from door frames to light switch plates, making sure to also clean walls, windows, air vents, ceiling fans, furniture and more.

Should I hire a move-out cleaning service or do it myself?

You may benefit from hiring a professional move-out cleaning service, depending on your budget, time frame and whether you will be getting a deposit back. Hiring a cleaning service takes the stress out of your move. But if you’ve had your house regularly deep-cleaned, or if your landlord will charge you for cleaning anyway, you can save costs by DIY-ing it.

How long does it take to clean a house professionally?

Generally, getting your house cleaned professionally can take several hours. The time it takes for house cleaners to complete their job depends on the size of your home, the number of bedrooms and bathrooms you have, the type of service you require and the condition of your house. It also might depend on how many employees are cleaning and the supplies they are using. If you get recurring cleaning services, the first visit might take a bit longer than the subsequent visits.

When choosing the best house cleaner for you, ask for an estimate about how long their services will take.

How much is a house cleaning?

The national average cost for house cleaning ranges between $25 and $50 per hour, per cleaner. However, the cost of house cleaning services near you might be different.

House cleaning prices vary based on how many square feet your home is, how dirty your house gets and how often the cleaning service comes. And, prices can be lower in areas with a lower cost of living, higher in big cities or affluent regions.

Some companies charge a set amount — such as 5 cents — per square foot, with a minimum amount, such as $100. You may save money by increasing the frequency of your house cleaning visits. Often a company will charge you less per cleaning when you schedule more cleanings per month. The cost advantage rewards your loyalty, and also reflects the fact that more frequent cleanings make it easier to maintain a high level of cleanliness in your home. A housecleaning service may charge more for the first visit or for one-time services than for recurring cleanings.

How do I choose the best house cleaning service?

When searching for the best house cleaning service near you, consider the depth of your cleaning needs, your budget and the size and condition of your home. Read reviews from verified customers of any cleaning service that you’re looking to hire. Also, check out the reviewers’ photos and do background checks on reviewers to ensure they’re not employed by established cleaning firms or maid agencies.

When viewing house cleaners on Thumbtack, you might see a Top Pro badge. This indicates that the service is one of the most popular and highly-rated professionals using the platform.

How do I prepare for a house cleaner?

There are several things you can do in preparation for a house cleaning to improve the efficiency and quality of the job. If you’re unfamiliar with a cleaning service, hiding and locking away any obvious valuables lying around can offer great peace of mind.

Depending on the preference of the cleaner, you may need to lock up your pets before the cleaners arrive. Washing dishes and decluttering the house allows a house cleaner to do their job more effectively. And leaving special notes for the cleaners about certain areas in your home that need attention is also helpful.

Ask house cleaners near you about their tips to help you prepare for their services.

How much should you tip maids or cleaning services?

Tipping between 15 and 20 percent is considered an appropriate tip for maids and house cleaners — just as it would with a barber, food delivery driver or taxi operator. During the holidays, you might want to consider tipping a bit more.

It’s important to note that some housekeeping and maid services might include a tip within the service fee, which should be explained to you in the service contract. Talk to house cleaners in your area to find out what's included in their fees.

Just had my first "deep clean" finished and it made such a difference! It was amazing to walk in to such a clean apartment when I got home, and it is such a stress relief that I don't have to spend a day doing it(when it wouldn't even be this clean!). I would definitely recommend Genie in a Bucket to anyone looking for a house cleaner!

Jennifer is the real deal! Came home to a wonderfully clean house with much more done than I expected. The bathrooms and kitchen are spotless, and every surface is well-dusted. The house even had a faint, pleasant scent of vanilla when I came home. Worth every penny!

I hired Genie In A Bucket and they came to clean once a month for about six months. Then they quit on me saying I didn’t fit into their schedule. If they weren’t going to keep me as a client they shouldn’t have taken me on to begin with and I am disabled so it makes it very hard to clean the house myself if I have to. They didn’t even do that great of a job the few times they did come to clean. They always breezed through very quickly and aren’t very detailed and we’re in an out of my house in about an hour with only three people. It would’ve been nice to have cleaners that were a bit more thorough and that didn’t pick me up as a client and then quit on me a few months later because of scheduling complications.

Zoey was an unexpected pleasure. She was professional, detail oriented, and friendly. I was nervous about having someone clean my house while I was there but Zoey quickly dispelled that worry. Plan on having Zoey come again.

Quality is so so. The house got vacuumed, the toilets are clean, the fridge hot wiped off, counters are clean. Skipped a lot of things… did not clean kitchen sink, front of dishwasher or any kitchen cabinets/doors. Skipped the master bath counter and faucets, Skipped mirrors, Skipped wiping side tables and dusting, etc. looks like it got vacuumed, mopped and a couple things in kitchen wiped off. Will try someone else next time.

They're very well organized. Called to provide quote, then sent email with follow up documents. Sent reminder a few days before first appointment. They arrived on time and did the best cleaning job that this house has seen in 10 years.

They were very quick in responding to the initial inquiry, and when the appointment had to be rescheduled it was done fast and easily, which I really appreciated. They showed up when they said they would, got to work right away, and they did an amazing job! The house was a mess with so many little places with years of gunk and dust, but they saw all those details without being pointed to them and got them cleaned. Thank you so much for the great cleaning work!!

I contacted this company and within 20 minutes they emailed me back. Within half a day I had my first appointment set up with them. They came out today Monday and two men were at the door. Yes I was surprised to see two men however after watching these two guys work it is a blessing. They not only cleaned this house they were able to move things easily and could clean under them. They were very thorough and nice. The pictures I included are from a 10 year old stove that now looks brand new also both of my sinks were terrible and now they are shiny. These people know how to clean! I found them in my nextdoor neighborhood so I thought they were local. Upon talking to the gentleman they were from Ohio however they are up here in Michigan all over everyday! So no worries there at all. I am glad I took a chance on this company and they will be the ones to help me with my house I hope forever more.

My SpeedyFriends, I must say, I am impressed. I came in expecting that my disaster would be transformed into something that would be a realistic result and not a unrealistic expectation of luxury. I get it, I let my house go, but Lindsay came in and was very open to suggestions, asked good questions and clean my place for an artistic recharge. I feel as though, she was actually listening to how I wanted everything. I sincerely appreciate her. Not to mention, the individual I spoke with prior, which was absolutely spectacular with how fast that customer service op handles it. I said, "Help me, I have an immediate cleaning emergency." They assured me that I could in fact, have someone come to me within the next couple of hours. Hands down, impressed with the overall experience. I stayed pretty open minded about how the experience was going to turn out, not particular. That is where I found the most gratification. I appreciate you all for returning the favor! Sincerely, Joshua B. P.S. Next cleaning will be for a deep clean.
