Nick did a great job on a pretty big job in my new home. He painted all the trim and windows white, and then the walls a shade of white. He was efficient, friendly and had great attention to detail. I really appreciated that he coached me through the process and helped pick out the right paint and provided suggestions on how to get the job done. He also moved everything around for me and required very little hand holding. It was nice to just know he was getting the job done. I actually had to travel the last few days he was finishing the project and got to come home to a freshly painted home. I was so impressed, it barely looked like the same home. I'm already planning to have him come back for a few other projects. Pics coming soon!

Jeremy and Aaron cleaned my windows this morning. They did a fantastic job. My windows are spotless! I cannot get over how clear they are. Both were on time and super people-friendly . I will be referring Klean Windows to anyone who wants spotless windows for a very reasonable price. Thank you both so much! Look forward to seeing you again.

Aaron was very responsive for a project that I needed to be done quickly. We were able to schedule something right away. He is also trustworthy. Because I was out of town at the time of the project, I gave him the garage code to the location. While painting, he kept me updated via text messages and sent me pictures of the final result. The project included painting a yellow/orange kitchen/dining room to a more neutral color and adding a layer of white paint to some window and stairs trim. I was quite happy with his work and would hire him again in a heartbeat.

A 15foot laundrytub drain line became completely clogged wth sludge. It took technician Bruce only an hour to bore out the line. It now drains better than it ever did.

Scott was a pleasure to work with. My roof was started and completed 2 days after i signed on the dotted line and its looks amazing. The siding and windows on my garage make my old garage new. In fact a neighbor asked me how they tore down and rebuilt it so fast. Several passer-bys have complimented me on the renovations. Everything happened very quickly and i couldn't be happier. Thanks Scott!

Barry repaired a kitchen window in my home. In spite of it being a seventeen year old window and challenging to get the correct part, he was very professional and did not vary from his first estimate to get the job done. I would reach out to him again and highly recommend Barry to others.

It was a very good experience working with Jam Handyman on my small condominium’s masonry work. We had a brick archway above an exterior window removed and replaced. He was prompt in assessing the work, providing a bid, scheduling the project, and doing the work. Additionally, he completed the work with some time to spare so did a few extra tuck-pointing areas around the building outside walls – all while coming in almost 10% under the original quote. If needed, we would gladly work with Jam and his team again!

Julio switched out some peeling linoleum on my kitchen floor last year to beautiful tiles that I picked out. It looks gorgeous now! He does expert work, and attends to the small details. I have an older house, and some of the windows need to be replaced. Several weeks ago, Julio installed replacement windows and built new frames for my kitchen windows, insulated them, and painted the trim to match. I can't believe how beautiful they look; I am so happy!

My husband and I purchased a new patio door from New Windows for America. The door is BEAUTIFUL…wooden interior patio door to match our kitchen, maintenance free exterior to which perfectly matches the existing trim on the rest of our home, and the door was custom sized (quite large). We selected New Windows for America for a few reasons. The lifetime warranty they gave us peace of mind that we wouldn’t have to worry about this investment in the future. The fact that New Windows for America is a local company gave us peace of mind that we knew that we weren’t just a number to some national company. The salesman was informative and knowledge about the product we were buying. He aided us in selecting a color that would match perfectly with our existing woodwork. The office staff did an excellent job in letting us know when our door would be installed. The installation team was fantastic and thoroughly explained the process before getting started that day. We highly recommend New Windows for America to all of our friends and neighbors.

Initially, I contracted Kellington to repair a woodpecker hole in the chimney and replace some damaged siding. In the process, they found significant issues caused by years of water damage that was not properly repaired by the previous owners. Chuck and his sons worked diligently to identify the full scope of the problem and worked with me to develop a plan of action. In the end, a significant amount of work was required to completely and effectively address the problem. Although I was not happy about having to deal with this issue, after being in the house less than 3 years, Chuck and his sons (Ryan and Chad) did an excellent job on the repairs. They not only addressed the current issues but also put things in place to help ensure there is no future water damage in that area. See before and after pictures. We ended up removing the siding from the majority of the back of the house, repaired and/or replaced support beams, new windows and new flashing all, around, then new siding, etc. I am very satisfied with the work of Kellington Remodeling. Chuck, Ryan and Chad always responded to my questions and ensured I understood the work they were doing and why it was being done in that manner. I will definitely contract again.

The project was a siding replacement for house and garage. Half of the house is two floors. In total there was about 2400 square feet of floor. We used heavy duty vinyl siding. There were a lot of lights, doors, windows, corners, etc to work around. The crew did excellent work meeting these challanges. Additionally, we went with full metal cladding for all window & door trim as well as fascia, and veranda support structure. The metal cladding was formed on site and perfectly fit everything it was applied to. The crew was here at 7:00 am ready to start and worked till after 6:30 pm. Mr. Lessard was here most of the time when he wasn't retrieving additional materials that were needed as the work progressed. The result was a project that went smoothly from start to finish. It is now a year later and there have been no problems due to winter weather or spring storms. We are totally happy with the results and have no regrets for choosing to go with Tier1 Restoration.

Our window AC stopped working on a Friday of a steamy hot weekend. I submitted my job "after hours" on Friday and John replied quickly and came out Saturday morning to install our new unit. We are very pleased with the weekend service and with the actual work done. John was very friendly and easy to work with. I expect we'll be contracting him again.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you replace a window?

You may want to replace a window if the glass has been damaged, you’re remodeling a room, or you want to upgrade your energy efficiency as well as your style by getting rid of those drafty single panes that are losing you money. When replacing a window, you can remove and replace the entire window down to the house frame. This method is best if the existing frame is damaged or deteriorating, but requires construction skills and know-how and will take more time and money. An easier and less expensive option is to install an insert replacement window into the existing frame. Insert replacements are only an option if your window frame is in good condition without rot or damage.

When replacing an entire window, first you’ll carefully remove the existing window with a pry bar and other tools. Next, you’ll make any repairs and adjustments needed to the existing frame or header and studs to ensure that the space is perfectly plumb and square, so the new window will sit perfectly within the space. Next, install the new window from the exterior, securing it into place. You’ll need to precisely wrap and insulate the window to ensure it doesn’t leak. Then, install the interior casing and exterior trim (as needed). If you prefer to hire a professional to install a window, consider replacing more than one window at a time, as the pro can work more efficiently.

How much is a custom window?

Choosing custom windows will increase your window installation cost but will provide you with exactly what you want. The average national cost for window installation is $2,650. Your custom window costs will vary based on several factors. The first factor is the type of frame you want. The four most common types of frames are vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Wood is typically the most expensive option, followed by aluminum. The type of glass you select will also affect cost. There are single-, double- and triple-pane windows. Most double- and triple-pane windows have gas sealed between the panes that act as insulation. Windows typically cost more the more energy-efficient they are, though this efficiency can save you money on utility bills in the long run. The type of glass used can also affect cost. There are different grades of glass — high-performance glass, low-e coated glass, and more — which all provide you with better insulation. In addition, the number of unified inches (window height x window width) you need will affect cost. The cost of custom windows will also be affected by installation cost and whether any repair or construction work is required to properly fit the new window.

How much would it cost to put in new windows?

The cost to replace a window can vary depending on factors such as window size, type of glass, brand of window, necessary trim repair, and any construction work required for installation. Labor rates and cost to do business in your region will also affect the cost. The national average window installation cost is $2,650 per project. Here are some examples of average trim repair and window replacement costs:

  • Trim repair:
    • Line and case a window frame with an MDF product: $400.
    • Line and case a window frame with raw hemlock wood: $500.
  • Approximate cost to install five windows at one time: $3,000.
  • Approximate cost to install one double-hung, energy-efficient 3-foot by 4-foot window: $500-$550.
    • For the same window size (3-foot by 4-foot) from a different manufacturer made with a specialty fiberglass exterior and all-wood interior, the cost could go up to $1,500.
    • Pricing can go as high as $5,000 for a bay or bow window with specialty glass and framing.
      • These examples include removal and disposal of old materials and window.
