Fantastic! These guys really know about garage doors and figured out the issue with mine where several others hadn't a clue, but charged me nonetheless. Would hire them again in a heartbeat and recommend with confidence.

I can't say enough about good things about Aaron's service. I needed a repair done the same day. Most other service providers while courteous would not come out on a Saturday morning. After responding to me within 30 minutes of my request, Aaron articulated his game plan for getting my door repaired and was on site within 90 minutes. 1 hour later the job was completed to my satisfaction, job site cleaned and I know have the rest of my day to enjoy. Aaron is reasonably priced, professional energetic and polite young man. He is my preferred handyman going forward.

Replaced both of our garage doors quickly! A few months after having them replaced, one door started to come off the track (just slightly and we noticed it right away and was likely due to our large car bumping the track above) and they sent someone out ASAP to get it back on track. We haven't had an issue since:)

I can't say enough about how professional Handyman Pablo is. I hired Pablo to hang some large pictures and a very heavy mirror and it was perfectly done! Also, he helped me fix a closet door that was off it's hinges. Lastly, he charges a very affordable rate; you need to hire him. He's a true Pro! Chris Tearse Wayzata, mn

Hired originally to design and install a barn door in a hallway but his work was so reasonably priced and his craftsmanship was excellent that we also had him build a mantel. Along with that he mounted our 65 inch tv on tile. I will keep his number handy for additional projects in the future.

We had Kellington Construction company replace our old hollow core doors in our family room level. They picked up the 8 doors at Menards for us. Color matched stain for our existing wood trim. The 8 new 6 panel solid oak doors were sanded, stained, & sealed to match our existing woodwork at Kellingtons workshop. They installed the doors in a very timely and professional manner. our new doors look beautiful and have updated this area of our home. Extremely happy with the craftsmanship! We are now inquiring on another quote on a roof repair for a bump out window seat. The project list continues!

The project was a siding replacement for house and garage. Half of the house is two floors. In total there was about 2400 square feet of floor. We used heavy duty vinyl siding. There were a lot of lights, doors, windows, corners, etc to work around. The crew did excellent work meeting these challanges. Additionally, we went with full metal cladding for all window & door trim as well as fascia, and veranda support structure. The metal cladding was formed on site and perfectly fit everything it was applied to. The crew was here at 7:00 am ready to start and worked till after 6:30 pm. Mr. Lessard was here most of the time when he wasn't retrieving additional materials that were needed as the work progressed. The result was a project that went smoothly from start to finish. It is now a year later and there have been no problems due to winter weather or spring storms. We are totally happy with the results and have no regrets for choosing to go with Tier1 Restoration.

Al walked into a mess with my closet doors. I had a previous Handyman help me paint and detatch the doors. He corrected the errors and helped until the project was finished. Very easy to work with.

For install of a jack shaft in a shed. First start that I really appreciate JS providing a military discount. For the install we worked with Troy and I'm very happy his work. He came out here quickly and clearly explained the work to be done and the cost. Most notable however was his attention to detail. He ensured the unit was tweaked to optimum performance and that is what makes the difference between an install and a professional install. Additionally he gave me me tips on maintenance and provided color match samples for the weatherstripping. I highly recommend Troy and JS Garage. Thank you!

Saul (Wilson) was absolutely great! I had a huge amount of interior painting. There was one area that was higher priority due to some new flooring being put in. He had a quick response and was able to accommodate the quick request and quoted a great price for the entire project. I changed from very dark colors (Red, Dark Brown, Burnt Orange) to lighter Greys. He was spot on with the amount of paint needed. Throughout the project (which took a few days) he was always on time, and ALWAYS had very pleasant attitude/personality (which I greatly appreciated). There were a few areas I noticed the old color bleeding through. (He worked a little later at night so the lighting wasn't the best to show the bleed through). I showed him the areas the next day and he took the feedback very well. He made sure touch up the areas I mentioned and said if I noticed any other areas (even after the project) he would come back and touch them up. He had a helper come in a few days that was also very nice. She did a great job helping Saul. Towards the end of the project I asked him to do a few extra items like paint a door and trim that our dog chewed when he was a puppy. He was very accommodating and got the extra areas done super fast. He really did an amazing job. If I ever need any more painting done, he's going to be the person I call from now on. I would highly recommend him and intend to refer him to friends and family.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you fix a broken garage door?

Garage door problems don’t have to mean the end of the world. Garage door repair is typically a one-day process and can be done for only a few hundred dollars. Common garage door repair requests include fixing slow or erratic garage doors, addressing strange sounds coming from the garage door or motor, fixing cosmetic damage such as dents or scrapes, repairing broken doors that are stuck open or closed, and troubleshooting inoperable doors.

The two main garage door operating mechanisms are sectional roll-ups or tilt-ups. Garage door repair services can fix single-car, double-car or RV-height doors. Your garage door may be made of wood, steel, aluminum, masonite, vinyl, fiberglass or another material. The type of garage door repair you need really depends on the type of garage door you have and the issue at hand. Garage door repair pros often charge a flat service call fee to diagnose the problem and provide an estimate. For customers who choose to have the repair done, the service call fee may be applied to the first hour of labor (including time to make the diagnosis). If your garage door is under warranty, the repair may be free of charge.

Who repairs garage doors?

Garage door repair is a specialized job, which is typically handled by a garage door repair service. Professional garage door repair technicians can test or repair a garage door system and fix cosmetic blemishes on doors. Common requests include help with jammed or inoperable doors, slow or erratic doors, unusual sounds, dents or scrapes on the door, and general system testing. Garage door repair professionals can work on single-car, double-car and RV-size garage doors.

How do you choose a garage door?

When garage door repair isn’t an option — perhaps the current door is beyond fixing or you want to upgrade to a quieter, more energy-efficient model — it’s time to buy a new one. But choosing a garage door is not as simple as it sounds, even when you know the right size for your home. A wide range of materials, styles and finishes are available, and each factor influences the cost. Garage doors are made of aluminum, steel, vinyl, fiberglass, masonite, wood (typically cedar or mahogany), or a composite of several materials. They may be insulated against cold or heat. Traditional and modern styles include raised panel, carriage house or crossbuck. Most styles have window or arch options, and are available in different wood finishes and neutral colors. Because garage doors account for a large part of a home’s exterior, their appearance is usually a homeowner’s top priority. An attractive garage door can increase a home’s curb appeal and resale value.

How much does garage door repair cost?

When a garage door goes off the track, the spring breaks, the door is dented or the garage door opener is on the fritz, a professional garage door repair specialist can help. The cost to have a garage door fixed varies, but the national average cost of garage door repair is $70-$110. The extent of the damage and the size and material of the door will affect the final cost. A garage door repair company generally charges a national average of $80 for a service call, which includes the first hour of labor and service, such as testing and inspecting the garage door and opener. Apart from labor, the garage door repair costs hinge on buying replacements parts. For example, a new spring costs an average of $60. Expect to pay several hundred dollars, though, if the door is beyond repair; a new garage door ranges in price from $200 to $4,000, and most homeowners spend an average of $800-$1,200.

How much does it cost to install a new garage door opener?

Your new garage door opener cost will vary based on the model you purchase and how long installation takes. Typically, installation pros charge by the hour, although if the pro is also selling the garage door opener they may have a flat fee for the product with installation. The national average for new garage door opener costs (with installation) is between $390 and $650, although the national average cost for the opener purchased alone may be in the $150-$300 range. The three most common types of openers are chain-drive, screw-drive and belt-drive. The chain-drive costs the least but makes the most noise. The belt-drive is typically the quietest and the most expensive. You can expect to pay about the same amount for installation for any of the three styles. The lifespan of a garage door opener is approximately 10 years, depending on quality. A pro may provide opener repairs for the cost of their service call fee or they may charge a flat fee, such as $100 for opener repair. Here are some examples of new garage door opener average costs, including installation:

  • Contractor-grade garage door opener with installation: $300.
  • Chain-drive opener with installation and one remote: $350.
  • Belt-drive opener with installation and two remotes: $400
  • Top-of-the-line opener with ¾-horsepower battery backup, belt drive and nearly soundless operation: $475
    • The majority of higher-end garage door openers are “smart” products and will connect via app to your smartphone for remote access.
