Needed new soffit board to replace rotting boards above bay window, that also contained a wasp nest or two. He also cleaned rain gutters. Things he did that were great: 1) showed up for initial meeting and to give estimate ON TIME! 2) performed beautiful work over bay window with new soffit boards complete with paint job; and removed wasps nest, 3) reasonably priced for this single-income household, 4) felt totally comfortable with him and appreciated his gracious attitude towards me as a female client. Was not condescending (which is my experience with a few contractors in the past). Will definitely ask him to return to help with more "fixer-upper" jobs as well as some more complex renovations.

I contracted with WD Home Repairs for: - demo of an existing bathroom consisting of carpet, toilet, cabinetry, sinks, and 1-piece fiberglass shower unit - floor tile installation - shower tile installation (walls and floor) Throughout the process, Donald was responsible, approachable, and reasonable. The quote for the project beat top-rated bathroom remodeling firms (Angie's List) by a significant margin. WD Home Repairs maintained an eye for detail while completing the project. As with any project of this scale, a couple of unforeseen issues came up. I was impressed with the speed and positive attitude in which WD Home Repairs resolved these issues. I am pleased with the finished project. The overall experience was largely worry-free. I would not hesitate to contract with WD Home Repairs again for future tiling projects.

Barry installed a closet system for me, and helped fix some work done by another handyman. Additionally, he fixed my son's bunk bed, which no one had been able to do. He made sure he knew what my expectations were, and he followed through. The quality of his work was excellent. Unlike anyone I've worked with since I moved here earlier this year, he cleaned up the work area, which I greatly appreciated! I have more projects on my home, and when I get to them, I will call Barry.

Jaimie is a first rate cabinet maker and carpenter. We definitely will be using him on our continuing remodel projects in our less than square, less than perfect older home. Jaimie displayed a gift for coming up with solutions to achieve the best results on the many problems with the remodel projects. Jaimie and his team are punctual. They clean up after themselves. They have a high standard for the quality of their work. And best of all, they tolerated our old lab helping them with the project.

Northern RX did a fine job tiling our bathroom remodeling, putting in large marble tiles around the bath tub. Tyler is an artist who chose the marble tile design to make a very artistic appearance. He was very concerned with scrap so as not to use more tiles than necessary - and I was able to return more tiles than the "normal" amount would have been. Professional quality work that was priced right. I will hire him again if I have other remodeling projects. It's nice to have a "go to" guy.

To Whom It May Concern: I write this letter in regard to Above All Construction as a general contractor. I had the pleasure of working with Mr. Jaurez on the renovation of our kitchen 2013. I can recommend him highly and without reservation. Mr. Jaurez was directly available throughout the entire process. He handled all communication personally; this made the entire project progress smoothly. Throughout the course of the renovation, Mr. Jaurez was a consummate professional. He was accurate in his initial assessment of the scale and cost of our project. He was absolutely clear in his record keeping. He managed the sub-contractors well, checking completed work and immediately following up with any touch ups needed. Our job was done with care and precision in a timely manner. We are truly enjoying our new kitchen! Penny and Bill Mills

We are so pleased with beautiful craftsmanship of the recently completed remodel of our employee break room. From the moment of my first phone call with Bruce Stasch , I knew we had found the right person and company to complete a very challenging project. He provided a free estimate, and was patient with our questions. He always responded in a timely manner to all calls and emails, which was much appreciated by myself and the management team. There were no surprises with the estimate either. The kitchen back splash tile and granite counter tops are fantastic ! Plus they cleaned up every step of the way- no mess left. We would highly recommend Apex Construction & Tile for a business or a residential remodel project. The professionalism and courtesy demonstrated by Bruce and Jordan was outstanding. Thank you !

I hired Studio Rebus to replace two doors that were kicked in during a home invasion. Kel created a very detailed budget for the project that my insurance company accepted without question, even though they had originally estimated the project to be much less (not realizing our doors were custom sized). Like most home improvement projects, this one took longer than originally projected, but I would definitely hire Studio Rebus again, for several reasons. First, Kel is responsive. No phone call or email went unreturned. He communicated promptly and thoroughly at every step of the process. Second, Kel's very thorough estimate left no stone unturned, so while our project got delayed because of supplier issues, there were never any surprises in expense. Third, Kel loves this work, and it shows. Unlike handymen I've hired in the past, Kel is very knowledgeable about houses, and lovingly pays attention to form and function and even the most minor finishing detail (as we requested--we were not interested in doing any painting or finishing work ourselves). Fourth, Kel kept our home and garage very tidy during this process, cleaning up after himself each day.

Stacy has helped with five different remodeling projects at our house. She is a very talented and down to earth designer who will listen to you and help you with your needs. She has an architect and art background which she uses in her designs. I would hire her for any remodeling project and have shared her name with several others who have been happy with her as well.

Our home siding project turned out extremely well. We are quite pleased with all the attention to detail that was made during the installation of our new siding, fascia, and soffits. New gutters were also installed which were of first class quality. Jim did a great job taking care of all the large and small details from the beginning of the estimate process through completion of work.

Mark was very prompt in response through the Thumbtack app. We exchanged direct contact information and scheduled the next available time for him to assess the project. What I appreciated most about my interaction with Mark was that this felt like a partnership. He assessed the project, he was kind, he wanted to do the best job meeting my price constraints and my quality expectationss. The job was completed in 1 day and it looks fabulous. I will definitely consider Mark for my next home improvement project. Thank you Mark!!

We hired Nate after soliciting several bids for repairs to our large redwood back deck. We are THRILLED with the work he did. He was thorough and professional throughout, from his initial correspondence in response to the request for a bid, through the completion of the project, communicating regularly regarding progress in the order and delivery of materials as well as written updates of the work progress. He was tireless in his search for the very best redwood for the project and it was definitely worth the diligence. The wood and his workmanship are beautiful. As soon as the wood was delivered, he worked efficiently through the project and his site prep and cleanup were greatly appreciated. He is knowledgeable, professional, dependable and does fantastic work. We will definitely call him again if we have need for further home repairs or improvement.

Clear Creek Renovations was extremely professional and prompt. They did an amazing job on my deck renovation. They finished the entire project when they said they would, stayed with the quoted price and had me inspect the work before they left to make sure I was satisfied with the workmanship and quality, which I was. I would definitely recommend Cedar Creek Renovations to my friends and family. I would also use them again for any future jobs I need completed. I’m extremely satisfied with the work they completed.

Judah Spent 7 hard days laying 1400 SQ feet of hardwood at our home in Apple Valley. He worked so very hard to complete in a timely manner (12 hour days). Great communication! The craftsmanship was second to none. No transition pieces. The flooring looks amazing. I would recommend him to everyone. Thank you Judah!

I was in a bind after our heavy solid California King headboard and bed frame came out of alignment. Our painter shimmied it away from the wall in order to make room for painting. My spouse was out of town and I needed the bed put back together and moved back against the wall ASAP. He replied quickly and came out the next morning. He had to do some problem solving and did some disassembly and reassembly. Very knowledgeable about other things such as room decor bathroom remodeling and home maintenance in general. We will be calling on him again really soon for our next project!

He was very quick to respond which we’ve had a bad experience in the past with other construction companies so that was really important to us. He ensured us that he would help in anyway we needed with our project after he had finished his work. Great experience and reasonable price!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.
