Got an immediate, very reasonable quote from Bart to remove 600 square feet of carpet and pad along with some leftover SheetRock and cement board. Bart called right away to schedule a mutually-agreeable appointment. As it turned out, however, rain had put him somewhat behind schedule. In the meantime, my house painter found the carpet and pad in his way so he removed it himself. Based upon my initial experience with Bart, I wouldn't hesitate to engage him again. He's a very friendly, accommodating young man. Just glad I was able to catch him before he left to come here!

We contracted for Wittmeier Construction to repair a sagging fence which required New posts, tightening of sections and removal of tree roots causing the fence to heave. 1) Response to an inquiry & estimate exceeded expectations. Mark scheduled the appointment & arrived at time set. The estimate was competitive & expected. 2) Mark arrived at the date & time set for work to proceed. 3) Work completed met expectations. It was completed professionally. Clean up was excellently! Professional, courteous, competitive pricing, and excellent craftsmanship.

Had an urgent situation to get a carpenter over to put down 1/4" plywood for a tile crew. The subfloor was in rough shape. Greg contacted me and was out within a couple hours and did a great job.

He did come out to the house and listened to my idea for adding trim to my kitchen cabinets. He didn't think it could be done, but volunteered to talk with other carpenters for their advice. He got back to me that the project could not be done. I agreed. He went above & beyond my expectations. I would definitely recommend him.

I would recommend Gene Juarez and Above All Construction to anyone looking to do improvements in their home. Gene offered a quote that was better than competitors and backed it up with quality I believe would match those competitors. His team was friendly, prompt, and cleaned up well when finished with their work. I would hire Gene and his team again and, in fact, did for a quick project. He responded right away and finish the work faster than asked.

I would refer them to anyone needing home construction in any form. Thank you for your great work and we look forward to contracting with you again soon!

We are so pleased with beautiful craftsmanship of the recently completed remodel of our employee break room. From the moment of my first phone call with Bruce Stasch , I knew we had found the right person and company to complete a very challenging project. He provided a free estimate, and was patient with our questions. He always responded in a timely manner to all calls and emails, which was much appreciated by myself and the management team. There were no surprises with the estimate either. The kitchen back splash tile and granite counter tops are fantastic ! Plus they cleaned up every step of the way- no mess left. We would highly recommend Apex Construction & Tile for a business or a residential remodel project. The professionalism and courtesy demonstrated by Bruce and Jordan was outstanding. Thank you !

Cory is great with everything he does. He was able to go with the flow when unexpected challenges arose and was a pleasure to work with. We are extremely satisfied with the new spaces he was able to create for us. He responds quickly to requests, is reasonably priced, and completed the work ahead of schedule. I would 100% recommend him to others in need of construction, & plan on requesting his services again in the future.

He has an excellent work ethic and is respectful of ones individual space; he is mindful of potential construction messes and proceeds accordingly. We had a small child on one of our projects and he worked around our schedule. He has performed everything from landscaping to complete house painting. Job Scope: 1). build 24' x 32' garage w/9' double+ vehicle door & attached 8' x 24' covered porch, in backyard 2). convert existing attached single car garage into house to expand kitchen, livingroom, & dining room. Conversion to have a french door w/. Timbertech deck facing the street & glass door with side lights facing backyard & new covered garage porch. 3). Refinish old oak floors to match new addition oak floor; change out millwork & interior doors to match. 4). Reinsulate old attic 5). Install 2 egress windows in basement. 6). Upgrade downstairs bathroom 7). Upgrade electrical service to home & cable lines. RESULTS: We have lived in this house since 1984 and I have never been so comfortable to the house. Plenty of elbow room to relax and entertain, where it was once loud and crowded to the point of nerve racking. The curb appeal is great. Our house has never been so warm (existing furnace was not changed out) - no cold spots, no ice dams (a first). We interviewed 5 general contractors to rehab our home, we did not know Morgan until we met to discuss this work. Morgan is a top shelf person of honor and integrity, he lives up to his commitments and his finished product is outstanding. My wife and I would reccomend Morgan for any home construction project (and have). Thanks Morgan - job well done.

I had to replace several feet of the walkway in front of my house after having it dug up to replace sewer pipes. I was in a hurry to get it replaced, and Lance came out about 3 days after my inquiry for over $100 less than the other quotes I'd received. He went above and beyond, replacing the missing and broken section, and he gave me advice about what to do with another section of concrete where water had been leaking into my home.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

What do construction project managers do?

Construction project managers help in all stages of your construction project, starting from the very first step. Typically paid a percentage of a total project cost, they are part of the design and planning process and help ensure seamless communication between the design parties and the construction team. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, their scope of work includes preparing cost estimates, budgets and work timetables; interpreting and explaining contracts and technical information to other professionals; reporting work progress and budget to clients; collaborating with architects, engineers and other construction pros; selecting subcontractors and scheduling and coordinating their tasks; responding to work delays, emergencies and other problems; and ensuring compliance with legal requirements, building and safety codes, and other regulations.

The work of construction project managers may seem very similar to that of general contractors, but there are some critical differences. One difference is that, unlike most general contractors, project managers are not engaged in the actual construction — they are onsite overseeing the work of subcontractors. Another key difference is that project managers are hired during the design phase, while general contractors are hired after plans have been made. The project manager is generally paid a percentage of the total project cost, while the general contractor is more typically paid according to the bid they gave to build your project.

How do I find out if a contractor is licensed?

It’s important to know if your project requires work by a licensed professional, as licensing laws can vary by state, locality, and job details. You can find general licensing information online at the government websites that handle occupational licensing for a given profession in your state or location. Some states designate a project cost over which you have to hire a licensed contractor. To find qualified licensed contractors, search your state’s licensing board. For example, in California, the Department of Consumer Affairs operates a searchable database through the Contractors State License Board. In some states, contracting licenses are provided at a regional level. You can find links to specific databases on BRB Publications’ Occupational Licensing page. Red flags that a contractor may not be licensed or may be providing an expired or false license number are unreasonably low bids or a request for complete payment upfront. Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.

How much does a project manager charge per hour?

You may choose to hire a construction project manager for your residential or commercial project. For the hands-on homeowner who wants to be involved in home construction but isn’t comfortable hiring subcontractors, a construction project manager can oversee these relationships and supervise labor. Typically, construction project managers charge a fee that is a flat percentage of the total construction project cost. This may range from 10 percent to 15 percent, depending on the company and the services they provide. This means a $30,000 home remodel project would have a construction project management fee of $3,000-$4,500. Hiring a construction project manager generally precludes the markup on subcontractor labor charged by a general contractor. The drawback to this choice is that, unlike a general contractor, the construction project manager won’t be financially responsible for the work of the subcontractors. For larger projects, you may hire a construction project manager who will also hire a general contractor. This provides the benefits of the general contractor along with the management services of the project manager, who will be on board from the beginning. The construction project manager will be involved in the design phase and work with the architects and the building crew, facilitating a smoother overall process.
