She came to our home to do two henna tattoos for teenage girls. She spent a lot of time letting them pick what they wanted and delivered exactly what they wanted. I would certainly hire her again.

She uses organic henna which colour lasts for many days compared to other hennas. She is always on time and very quick while doing henna. The best thing about her is her designs. Whether it's a flower or some calligraphic fonts or cartoons she draws exactly in the same way as we show her in the pictures.

I attended a class taught by Tina for Venitian mask face painting at the 2013 kapital kidvention in Northern Virginia. She demonstrated excellent skill and enthusiasm for her craft and was a great teacher. She is clearly dedicated to her art, and being an instructor at this event is a great honor, setting her apart in the field. Thanks for the great class Tina! I did a Mardi Gras event a few months later and used a lot of what I learned and got great reviews :) - Rainbow Rose The Princess Clown (Bianca)

Cindy and her staff were absolutely amazing!! They helped us pull off two carnivals in one day. One carnival was for our CID/ASD kids!! Absolutely Dynamite!! Everyday I have parents and kids come up to me and tell me how cool and creative the face painting, balloon designs and glitter tattoo's were. The second carnival was later that evening...again nothing but awesomeness !! Thanks again Cindy for helping us pull off a fantastic event!! We will see you next year!!

Amy came to a private party a friend of mine hosted, and it was great! I've never done a henna tattoo before, so I was skeptical, but it was really a fantastic way to hang out with friends. Her artistry is really superb, and seeing the artwork for a couple of weeks after was a great reminder of a wonderful afternoon.

When the kids said they had a blast with Elizabeth, I have to believe there was fun and job well done. Elizabeth was at my niece birthday party and did some face painting and tattoo on the kids hands. The kids enjoyed Elizabeth's character as well as the fun job she did. Way to go Elizabeth! Koffi A.

I recently hired Anita to provide airbrush tattoos at my daughter's high school graduation party, initially thinking it would provide entertainment for the families bringing their younger children. As it turned out, everyone wanted to get in on the action, including my 80-year mother! By the end of the night, very few guests had left the party without getting a tattoo. Anita was prompt, professional, neat, accommodating and provided services exactly as advertised, even agreeing to stay later than scheduled to handle the high demand for tattoos! I would highly recommend Anita for your next party.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does a henna tattoo stay on?

Typically a henna tattoo stays on anywhere from one to three weeks. Henna artists work with henna paste, also called mehndi, which dyes the skin for a short period of time. An important part of Indian culture, the use of henna has become increasingly popular in the United States, with henna artists providing henna tattoos for weddings, as event entertainment and for other special events. Henna artists typically apply their designs to the palms and backs of the hands, the wrists, up to the elbows, and from the feet up to the knees. To preserve the rich color of your henna tattoo and help it set, avoid water as much as possible within the first 24 hours of application. The color will be richest during the first week. Brides may want to have their henna tattoos applied one or two days before the wedding for optimal results.

What is the meaning behind henna tattoos?

Henna tattoos, as they are called in the United States, have a long tradition in Indian, African and Middle Eastern cultures. For centuries, the leaves of dried henna plants have been ground into a fine paste to be used as a temporary and nontoxic skin dye. This form of body decoration has been used in celebrations, weddings and ceremonial rites of passage in many cultures. Often in Hindu weddings, henna artists decorate the hands and feet of the bride (and at times the groom) with intricate designs. In some Muslim traditions, henna artists paint women with henna designs as they are in their final stages of pregnancy. In the United States, popular culture has adopted this beautiful body art and henna artists provide brides (and sometimes grooms) with temporary henna tattoos. Henna artists are also a popular choice for entertainment at corporate events, birthday parties, bachelorette parties and festivals. Henna artists may charge anywhere from $10 to $300 per hour.

How much does it cost to get a henna tattoo?

Nationally, the average cost to hire a henna artist is between $100 and $180 per hour. Rates will vary by location and the experience of the individual henna artist; it’s possible to find artists who charge less than $50 per hour. Some henna artists charge an hourly rate, especially for corporate events or festivals where they are providing service to multiple people within an hour. They may also charge flat rates for bridal and wedding services or special events. Here are some examples of average cost:

    • Hourly rate: $65-$85 or more per hour. Price is dependent on event size and number of attendees.
    • Starting rate for minimal palm designs: $15 or more.
    • Henna tattoos covering the hands and wrist and bottom of feet up to the ankle: $175.
    • Henna tattoos covering the hands to the mid-arm and feet to above the ankle: $300.
    • Henna tattoos covering the hands to the elbow and the feet to the knee: $450.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
