These guys are definitely an A+ operation in my book. They showed up early, worked nearly non-stop, and even explained things to me as they were going along, all with a lighthearted attitude. Prior to hiring and arrival on site work, Dusty put up with all my questions, ideas, thoughts, and suggestions, and never once avoided my calls or emails. His communication and honesty throughout this process sealed the deal that I had chosen the right company for my porch project! Thanks S2F!! :)

Larry installed a porch swing for us and did a beautiful job! It took him just as much time as he expected, which meant he came in right on budget. He arrived on time even though he squeezed me in last minute. We will definitely be using him again!

I’m so pleased to find Kel Heyl on Thumbtack as now he will be available to even more homeowners. Kel has done work on and in my home since 2004, from very large projects to small tasks. I love that he is such a careful, creative and meticulous craftsman – his work is never slapdash. I’ve always been very happy with the results, and can recommend him highly to anyone interested in having work done on their home by somebody who knows what he’s doing, and will do it well. Built screened porch, based on his own design. (2004) Removed a chain-link fence and posts. (October 2004) Removed textured ceilings in living room and dining room. Ripped and installed new molding for both rooms. Installed a chandelier. (April 2010) Installed a new entry door to porch, including altering and adapting the jamb. (June 2009) Hung antique coat rack. (2008) Installed a new pre-hung access door for garage. (June 2009) Re-screened porch panels damaged by cat and raccoons. (July 2011) Hung a magnetic knife rack. (February 2012) Re-shingled garage roof, first removing old layers down to bare wood. (August 2012)

Nick and Adam were fantastic to work with. They gave me a very competitive bid, and then did excellent work. I ended up not doing the project I initially posted in Thumbtack, they ended up replacing my house, garage and shed roofs, two porches and the railing on my deck. They kept in touch with me as we scheduled the job, and were here the day they said they'd be here. The roofs were completed in two days, and the porches in one. Adam made sure that all work was completed to my satisfaction, including redoing two things that weren't bad work, I just wanted them done differently. All work was completed on time and on budget. I hope to get them back later this summer to do more projects. Here's a link to my photos since I can't upload them https://www.amazon.com/photos/share/MwgjeFjSbs6JBb5kS1dHlUaV3MESyzU5XFQehtv7CO5

Very pleased with the job. I had a porch swing hung on my front porch and a couple of holes that I had made repaired. Everything looks great and I'm glad to have my porch swing in operation. Just contacted ThumbTack last night and the job was done before 2:00 PM today. Thank you.

Gerry was great to work with; he responded quickly to my request and arranged a time to see our job and give a quote within days. His quote was very detailed, giving a good idea of cost of supplies needed, as well as his estimated labor. In the end, the total was only 7% more than the estimate. Once we gave the go ahead, he was right on time with his estimated start and finish date. Gerry did quality work in repairing rotting beams on a swing set, stripping/sanding/re-staining front porch and railings, fixed sunken patio pavers, repaired a gate, and a few other misc items. I would recommend Gerry and I would use his services again.

I had several people come out and look at repairing my door because the threshold was rotten and ants were coming in my home. They all said I had to replace the door. This is a three panel exterior patio door and the estmates to replace it were $3500 to $4500. Denny said he could fix it instead of replacing it. He did a wonderful job and charged me $500. The seal is tight, no more ants and the exterior is painted beautifully. While he was here, he also helped me with replacing my door strikes. On another visit, he fixed my three-season porch screen door that had been installed incorrectly. I'm having him back to replace a bannister. I highly recommend Denny.

Paul is a great guy, and very efficient. He came over on a Sunday late afternoon (which I really appreciated) and removed some snow on a satellite dish that was pretty high on the roof. I Would highly recommend him to anyone as he clearly has tons of experience!

We had a 4 season porch, low maintenance deck, crown moldings and kitchen backsplash added to our home by G. Johnson Builders LLC. Results exceeded our expectations. Craftsmanship and attention to detail was very apparent. Communication between builder and homeowner was very clear and his prices were fair. Very positive experience.

Mark did some floor leveling for me over top of radiant heat wiring on my 4 season porch. He did a great job and saved me money on supplies as well. I do most of my own work but wanted some help on this, so I'm fairly experienced and know what I'm dealing with. He's fair and honest and a great guy.

We hired White Pine Construction to add a porch on the front of our house and I have to say that I am very impressed. They knew exactly what we wanted and the end result was better than what we actually pictured! They are very friendly, professional and they don’t mess around- they just get it done. I had a hard time picking out pillars that would work well with our structure and that I truly loved so White Pine build is custom pillars that ear exactly what I wanted. I am very pleased and have recommended them to family members already. If we need work done in the future we will definitely be calling them again! Thank you!

Nick did a great job for us. We had a leak in a tub/shower that had ruined the ceiling and wall in the lower level bath shower. And our master bath shower needed to be redone also because the grout was falling out.. We had some water damage on one wall in our family room and we needed to have a new door installed at the bottom of our basement stairs. Plus we needed a new driveway, porch and sidewalk and new gutters. Nick was able to get the plumbers, painters, cement and gutter people in to do their work exactly when they were needed as well as the cultured marble installer. Nick did all of the demo and rebuilding of the showers and tile installation himself. It all took about 6 weeks. Part of that time was to finish one bathroom before proceeding to the other 2 so we would have one usable bathroom at all times. I felt I had an open line of communication with Nick the whole time. We couldn't be happier with the results.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.
