For the price I am very satisfied with my choice. The office was easy to work with, the movers were friendly and helpful. They were maybe a little slower and less experienced than some of the more expensive companies might provide, but I'm happy I chose On Call Services overall.

Tanner and Alex moved us from Public Storage to our new home. When we put things in storage, we had all kinds of odds and ends. No wrap on our furniture or mattresses. Really, no organization at all. When it showed up at the new house it was all safely transported. Wrapped to protect it and moved into our 3 story home without damage to our things or our new home. My wife says "they don't charge enough." Thanks TK Movers for the move. We would highly recommend to anybody wondering who to use.

The crew was great! Would have been 5 stars out of 5 except that we were expecting 3 movers right away in the morning, since we had two closing in the afternoon (old home and new home) but only 2 movers came. They gave us 4 in the afternoon but the morning stretch was more important as we had to be out of the house by a certain time. All 4 crew members were very professional and polite and I'd recommend hiring them. Just wish we would have got the right number in the morning as it delayed our closing.

I am extremely pleased with my choice of SuperSafe Movers! The move was virtually seamless. Though I had underestimated the number of items and amount of time it would take to complete the move, the gentlemen who worked on the team were able to quickly adjust. They displayed the utmost courtesy and professionalism. The team worked almost non-stop and took great care in preserving the items they were transporting. Moving is a stressful event and I appreciate their effort to eliminate as much of the stress as possible, by doing an efficient and professional job.

The movers were top-notch. They were careful with the piano and prepared with everything that was needed, including unscrewing a door to make the piano fit. They were prompt and friendly and moved the piano with no problems. They were clear professionals and I would definitely use again.

We were in a pinch because we needed movers, and only started sourcing for one on the same week. I called almost every other movers I know in town, and everyone couldn't make it. Joe saved the day when he responded to my posting on Thumbtack. His services were affordable, and his team did a swift job getting us moved out. He even provided great recommendation on rental trucks. (UHaul was out of trucks, and we went with Penske upon rec.) My husband and I appreciated the work done and liked that we supported a local small business like Franklin Movers.

Both movers showed up on time & worked extremely hard. They seemed a little inexperienced (not knowing how to move furniture around tricky corners/hallways), but overall I was happy with the movers!

Both Chris and Jamie showed up to conduct my in-home quote -- nice touch. I'd had 3 previous quotes and total move weight estimates, and Chris's weight estimate was spot-on (the other 3 were low, which might have ended up costing me extra had I chosen any of them). Chris moved all of my stuff, point-to-point, from MN to AZ, on ONE truck and in 3 days. And he did it for less than the national brand name movers, who each gave me a 5-11 (business) day delivery window. Completely professional operation -- not one item was damaged or broken in the move. And Chris personally set up both my beds and reattached the heavy mirror on my dresser in my new home. I have not one shred of buyers remorse after contracting Robinson Moving Systems. I had an extremely tight deadline -- less than 4 weeks -- to move all of my stuff across the country to start a new job. No way I could have pulled it off without Chris and his crew's help. They earned every penny. And then some. Moving might be life's worst chore. But if I have to do it again, I'd choose Robinson Moving Systems in a heartbeat. It's a no-brainer.

Everything from initial contact, through ballpark quote to the actual move went according to plan. Paul's estimate was right on the money. The crew was efficient, courteous and did some very heavy lifting with good humor. Nothing broken or damaged, everything accounted for. Excellent choice of movers.

5-Star Movers immediately answered my message and were able to move my treadmill same-day! They responded quickly to all of my questions, arrived when they said they would, and managed my extremely heavy treadmill without any damage to it or my home. I would definitely use their moving services again.

I had movers move furniture, and boxes from garage into upstairs. They did everything very professional. They made sure they did not bang against any walls, they helped put the bed together and that was very helpful. I also noticed they made sure they were bending and lifting properly to ensure no accidents.

We recently used Daymakers to help move a family member's belongings out of an apartment and into storage. I grew up in the area, but live in Atlanta now, so we were coordinating from long distance. They made it SO EASY. I've used maybe five different moving companies in the last ten years and Daymakers was hands-down the best. I would recommend them and use them again without any hesitation. They were early (I've never had a moving service be on time, let alone early), the staff was incredibly professional and courteous, and they handled everything with care. I never once felt like something would break or wasn't being handled as if it were their own belongings. These guys hustled, as well. Sometimes with hourly service, you get movers who take their time, trying to rack up the fees. Not the case with Daymakers. They were efficient and exceeded my time expectations by over an hour. Also, I loved that the price included everything - the labor, the truck, and the moving blankets. Other services will tell you something low, but then tack on fees for mileage or blankets. I learned that they hard way before. Daymakers was up front and everything was inclusive, making it very easy to know what we would pay in the end. Lastly, setting everything up with them was easy. Great communication. All around it was the easiest moving experience we have had, and during a particularly stressful time at that.

Nothing was damaged and the price did not budge a penny. Thank you again for making my move across country stress free. I will be recommending AmerApex Moving to all my friends and family!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.

How much does it cost to move across the country?

The national average cost for hiring cross-country movers is $1,490-$2,220. A number of factors can affect the cost. One factor is the distance you want to move. For example, an East Coast-based moving company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. Another factor is how many belongings you have. Most cross-country movers charge by the cubic foot.

The type of move you want is another consideration in cost. You can have your belongings moved exclusively and delivered on a set day, or you can opt for a consolidated move, which is less expensive. In a consolidated move your belongings are stored and transported with the goods of other customers who are moving to your general vicinity during the same general time frame as you. Your belongings should arrive within a one- to two-week window, rather than on a set day. If you want the cross-country movers to pack your belongings for you, the cost will also increase.
