We decided to use Michelle for our premarital counseling. She was very professional and made us feel relaxed immediately. We felt it was well worth investing the extra money for the counseling and it helped us discover things we didn't even realize we hadn't discussed before. It was great! When it came time for our wedding day, we felt more confident than ever about our future together. On the day of our wedding, she was there an hour early to make sure that everything was set up correctly and would run smoothly. She also met with our vendors to go over any questions they may have. Most importantly, she made us feel relaxed and comfortable, when we were both pretty nervous.

Todd is engaging throughout our sessions. His approach to relationship counseling seemed different than we would have expected from a typical relationship therapist but it’s also one of the main reason why we choose to have him work with us.

For 50 years I lived life with an anxious drumbeat and had trouble slowing down my mind. After countless hours of traditional counseling and attending groups, I still wondered, “where’s the joy, the fun of life.” A trusted friend referred me to Judith. I was skeptical, concerned about what hypnosis might mean – for no reason. What a life-changer Judith has been! From the very first session I started feeling better. More relaxed and focused. Judith’s occasional use of therapeutic hypnosis was a key tool in helping me understand the limiting beliefs that were driving my anxious thoughts. I’m enjoying life and loving myself and my relationships like never before. I’ve since referred several people to Judith, including my 90 year old parents. All have experienced the same life-changing results that no other counselors were able to provide.

My husband and I have been to counseling a couple different times throughout our 7 year marriage, each with multiple sessions. We find John very helpful and we are very comfortable talking with him. We feel he really listens so he can understand us before just throwing out advice. He has always been a positive mentor and we will continue to go back even if our marriage has improved.

I completed Ginny's First Degree of Reiki on March 24, 2002, Second Degree of Reiki on September 15, 2002, and Karuna Reiki on January 26, 2003. I then became a Reiki Master on December 27, 2004. I learned so much from Ginny. In all of the classes Ginny gave clear instructions, handed out the proper materials needed for the class and she always conducted herself in a professional manner. I also met with Ginny for individual Reiki sessions and counseling. Ginny shows empathy and understanding for her clients and students. She is so knowledgeable when it comes to sharing information about Reiki(the history, hand positions, meditations, self care, symbols and advice on how to start your own Reiki practice. All that I can say is that I truly feel that I learned from the best.

I've know John for several years. We've worked together in business and ministry. John isn't a fresh out of school naive kid or someone with no real world experience. John's wisdom comes both from experience and Godly wisdom. If you're looking for a cardigan wearing, Ned Flanders christian counselor, John is NOT your guy. Lastly, and most importantly, I trust John.

What a great place. People are treated with such dignity and privacy. Also, everything is very comfortable. Easy parking. Lovely decor and even hot beverages. People go out of their way to assist and the counseling is great. I really feel like an individual who is well-known.

I would recommend Noelle to anyone. I believe she helped create a solid foundation in our pre-marital counseling & I truly believe that she helped save out marriage during challenging times. Noelle guided us in a non-judge mental manner. She gave us hope. She gave us homework to work on at home to use the tools she had taught us in our sessions. I honestly looked forward to meeting with her. I'm very thankful to have Noelle in my life & quite honestly - I'm not convinced my marriage would have survived without her. Again, I would recommend Noelle to anyone. She is professional, trustworthy, respectable, accountable...,I can't say enough good things.

Apart from being qualified to do my job, I feel that it is very important to have empathy with everyone that comes into my office. Many times people are dealing with so much stress and they just want to be listened to. I form a caring, and professional relationship with my clients and this fosters trust. When there is a foundation of trust, clients tend to be more open and honest about what's really going on and we can get to the root of their concern and work on getting them well. Its all about YOU! the client.

1. I am trained in Marriage and Family therapy. This is otherwise called systems theory. It presents principles that work. I can offer ideas that make sense and provide a specific direction you can use to enhance your relationship. 2. I am affiliated with the Directory of Marriage-Friendly Therapists - dedicated to supporting relationships. Signals will not be sent that perhaps you aren't right for each other. 3. I can also work with individuals cognitively to discover why they do what they do. 4. I am trained in providing specific ways to improve communication and conflict-resolution. 5. I provide support, encouragment, insight, direction, specific principles, experiential training and creative approaches to therapy. 6. I can also attend to the spiritual if the person / couple desire. I am more than familiar with branches of world religion and Christian faith. I don't believe we can segment ourselves from the spiritual. On the other hand, people who do not wish to go there will find good psychology also practiced that can enhance their life.

About

Solo practice of Dr. Jill Zimmerman, LPC, LMFT, specializing in PTSD, phobias, marriage and family, domestic and sexual abuse, anxiety, depression, and life coaching. Powerful new therapy techniques recently discovered and used at Integra Counseling Services dramatically reduce the time needed to accomplish a meaningful change. Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), for example, is a method by which traumatic memories that are causing distress can be reprocessed. Individuals are able to take what is useful, self-enhancing, or instructive from their experiences and discard the rest or self-heal. This self-healing also occurs very rapidly and, therefore, people do not have to spend excessive amounts of time or money to achieve the natural healing process of the mind, body, and spirit.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a psychologist?

A psychologist is a professionally trained mental health professional who helps patients navigate challenging life situations or mental health issues. To become a psychologist you must earn a doctoral degree; qualifying degrees include a Ph.D., Psy.D. or Ed.D. To actively practice, a psychologist must be licensed in their state and maintain good standing. Psychologists are trained to administer tests that can evaluate a patient’s cognitive strength and weaknesses, intellectual skills, vocational aptitude and preference, personality characteristics, and neuropsychological functioning, explains the American Psychological Association (APA).

A psychologist meets with patients in an office and may work with a variety of methods, depending on patient need, such as cognitive, behavioral or interpersonal.  According to the APA, common reasons a person may visit a psychologist include:

  • Dealing with depression, anger or anxiety over a long period of time.
  • Help with a chronic condition that is interfering with their lives or physical health.
  • Help with grieving and other abrupt transitions.
  • Overcoming addictions.
  • Managing chronic illness.
  • Breaking old and harmful patterns of thinking or behavior.

What are the types of psychologists?

Psychologists are healthcare professionals who use scientific methods to understand the relationships between the brain, environment and behavior. Psychologists may focus on research — studying how the brain and various environments drive behaviors to better understand the issues that trouble patients and society as a whole — or they may focus on practice — interacting with people using therapeutic methods. The American Psychological Association shares some of the more prevalent types of psychologists:

  • Clinical psychologists assess and treat mental, emotional and behavioral disorders.
  • Cognitive and perceptual psychologists study human perception, thinking and memory.
  • Community psychologists work to strengthen the abilities of communities, settings, organizations and broader social systems to meet people’s needs — such as improving support for victims of natural disasters, or working to improve health policies.
  • Counseling psychologists help people understand and take action on everyday issues, career and work problems, and serious adversity.
  • Developmental psychologists study the psychological development of the human being throughout life.
  • Educational psychologists concentrate on how effective teaching and learning take place.
  • Engineering psychologists conduct research on how people work best with machines.
  • Environmental psychologists study the dynamics of how people interact with their environments.
  • Evolutionary psychologists study how evolutionary principles such as mutation, adaptation and selective fitness influence human thought, feeling and behavior.
  • Experimental psychologists study cognitive processes, comparative psychology (cross-species comparisons), and learning and conditioning.
  • Forensic psychologists apply psychological principles to legal issues.
  • Health psychologists specialize in how biological, psychological and social factors affect health and illness.
  • Industrial/organizational psychologists apply psychological principles and research methods to the workplace to improve productivity, health and the quality of work life.
  • Neuropsychologists and behavioral neuropsychologists explore the relationships between brain systems and behavior.
  • Quantitative and measurement psychologists focus on methods and techniques for designing experiments and analyzing psychological data.
  • Rehabilitation psychologists work with stroke and accident victims, people with mental disabilities, and those with developmental disabilities caused by such conditions as cerebral palsy, epilepsy and autism.
  • School psychologists assess and counsel students, consult with parents and school staff, and conduct behavioral interventions when appropriate.
  • Social psychologists study how a person’s mental life and behavior are shaped by interactions with other people.
  • Sport psychologists help athletes refine their focus on competition goals, become more motivated, and learn to deal with anxiety and fear of failure around competition.

How much do therapists cost?

If you are experiencing a challenging time, have mental health difficulties, or just want professional guidance as you move through life, a therapist can provide relief, tools and structure. The national average cost for a therapist is $80-$100 per hour, although prices may be higher or lower depending on geographic location and the experience and training of the therapist.

Psychiatrists, psychologists and licensed therapists are all health professionals who offer various modalities of therapy. Ask questions about the type of therapy they specialize in (such as cognitive or behavioral, etc.) and their area of expertise (such as grief, anxiety, body image disorders, etc.) to help you find the right fit for your needs. Therapy sessions are typically 50-60 minutes long.  The patient usually meets with the therapist in their office; sessions may also be held remotely (via Skype, etc.) or in a clinical setting. Psychologists, psychiatrists and other therapists who have earned advanced degrees will typically charge higher rates than other licensed therapists. Depending on your diagnosis, your health insurance may cover your therapy costs.

Can a clinical psychologist write prescriptions?

To be able to write a prescription, a clinical psychologist must practice in a state that permits them to do so, and must either have a master’s degree in psychopharmacology or have completed the required advanced training program. According to the American Psychological Association (APA), five states currently permit psychologists to write prescriptions: Idaho, New Mexico, Illinois, Iowa and Louisiana. Many psychologists who are not able to write prescriptions work in partnership with psychiatrists, pediatricians or primary care doctors to help their patients who need medication.
