Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who repairs garage doors?

Garage door repair is a specialized job, which is typically handled by a garage door repair service. Professional garage door repair technicians can test or repair a garage door system and fix cosmetic blemishes on doors. Common requests include help with jammed or inoperable doors, slow or erratic doors, unusual sounds, dents or scrapes on the door, and general system testing. Garage door repair professionals can work on single-car, double-car and RV-size garage doors.

How much does it cost to get a garage door fixed?

The national average for garage door repair cost is between $80 and $110. Some of the factors that affect your garage door repair cost are the type of springs (most often torsion or extension), the size and weight of the door, and the door material. Many garage door pros will charge a service fee to visit your house and determine the problem. Often, the service fee includes a set amount of labor. One example of this is an $80 service fee that includes the first hour of work plus testing and inspecting your garage door and garage door opener, while another pro may charge $150 for the same standard service call.

Broken or jammed springs are a common problem. In one example, the starting price for spring repair was $99, while another pro’s cost started at $185. The $185 starting price included $40 for transportation costs, $60 for parts, and $85 per hour of labor. Professionals may charge extra for late-night garage door repair emergencies.

Is it dangerous to replace a garage door spring?

Yes, it can be dangerous to undertake a garage door spring repair yourself. Fixing it requires having a working knowledge of how a garage door works and understanding how the parts work. A door can fall on you, and loaded springs can suddenly release and hit you. For this reason, it’s recommended you call a pro to replace or fix your garage door spring.

Should I tip the garage door repairman?

It’s not expected that you tip garage door repairmen, and normally they’re not expecting a tip for their services. However, it’s always a kind gesture to tip for excellent and friendly service.

How often do garage door springs break?

Garage door springs break every three to seven years, depending on its quality and condition. For example, rust and cold weather can shorten the lifespan of a torsion spring.

How much does garage door repair cost?

When a garage door goes off the track, the spring breaks, the door is dented or the garage door opener is on the fritz, a professional garage door repair specialist can help. The cost to have a garage door fixed varies, but the national average cost of garage door repair is $70-$110. The extent of the damage and the size and material of the door will affect the final cost. A garage door repair company generally charges a national average of $80 for a service call, which includes the first hour of labor and service, such as testing and inspecting the garage door and opener. Apart from labor, the garage door repair costs hinge on buying replacements parts. For example, a new spring costs an average of $60. Expect to pay several hundred dollars, though, if the door is beyond repair; a new garage door ranges in price from $200 to $4,000, and most homeowners spend an average of $800-$1,200.

How do you fix a broken garage door?

Garage door problems don’t have to mean the end of the world. Garage door repair is typically a one-day process and can be done for only a few hundred dollars. Common garage door repair requests include fixing slow or erratic garage doors, addressing strange sounds coming from the garage door or motor, fixing cosmetic damage such as dents or scrapes, repairing broken doors that are stuck open or closed, and troubleshooting inoperable doors.

The two main garage door operating mechanisms are sectional roll-ups or tilt-ups. Garage door repair services can fix single-car, double-car or RV-height doors. Your garage door may be made of wood, steel, aluminum, masonite, vinyl, fiberglass or another material. The type of garage door repair you need really depends on the type of garage door you have and the issue at hand. Garage door repair pros often charge a flat service call fee to diagnose the problem and provide an estimate. For customers who choose to have the repair done, the service call fee may be applied to the first hour of labor (including time to make the diagnosis). If your garage door is under warranty, the repair may be free of charge.

Mike did an excellent job fixing my garage door issues! He was also very courteous! I highly recommend him for any garage door repair! 12/31/2020 update - My door’s spring was damaged when it froze to the ground a few days ago. It failed dramatically today and Mike was able to fit me in at the last minute so that I could get it fixed before the holiday. Mike is definitely my go-to for any garage door repair!!

JS Garage Door far exceeded what I could have hoped for. Jeremiah was very thorough, explained clearly what was going on with my door and the opener, very quickly repaired what he could on that day and was back 2 days later to finish the job. I thought I was going to need a new door and a new opener... and he showed me what needed fixing - no new door. And took a look at the opener, explained why it would not be a good idea to repair and the likelihood the opener would fail again and got me a new opener that fit what I needed. Thank you Jeremiah! You made this part of my life a whole lot better....

My husband and I have had countless issues with our garage door from when we purchased our home back in october. After a costly repair that left us without use of our garage door-- we had lost hope. I called up JS garage door and spoke with Mike about the problems we were having and he knew exactly what our issue was just by looking at some photos and me explaining the issue briefly over the phone. He gave me options, all of which were affordable and explained the purpose behind each option and let me decide which option worked best for me. He came to my home right on time and got right to work, he was courteous and friendly and helped me understand why he had to repair the door the way he did. Our door had a visible crack between panels that required additional support in order to keep the door viable, he also replaced the track wheels, the eye sensors, new heavier dusty springs to accommodate for the extra weight, and a whole lot more! He also remembered how I mentioned I didn't have an outside keypad opener and he installed one for us free of charge. I highly recommend JS Garage-- I couldnt be happier for the value and the quality of the work done! :) Thanks for everything Mike! For reference we paid a smidge over $500 for the work done!

Rob did an excellent job with the repair. He was very prompt in answering the questions from my initial inquiry and the scheduling time for service was only a couple of days out. Once the problem was identified, the repair took approximately 1 hour. Had garage door opener replaced with a belt-driven unit that included a wireless keypad and 2 remote controls. Removal and disposal of the old opener also included. The new opener is super quiet! Thank you so much Rob!

Quick response from office staff, and tech arrived on time which was important because i had to leave for work right after. I was late anyway because of the aggressive push by the tech to replace entire door/cables/track/and hardware. When i explained that i understood that the whole thing will eventually need to be replaced and i appreciated him walking me through it, i had a budget limitation and only wanted the repair to the cables so my door will go up and down. that made him more annoyed and he pushed harder for me to buy a whole new system. He eventually did the repair i asked for but not without a sour attitude... sorry man, i listened to and considered your sales pitch/recommendation and was upfront and honest about what i wanted after, we just didn't need all the extra back and forth...I almost asked you to leave so i can call the other thumbtack pro that you ripped on. Overall, i just might go through reliable garage door when i can pay to have a whole new door installed, but the tech isn't going to make that decision easy.

I liked the Thumbtack experience of "chatting" to find a service provider for my garage door repair. The spring was broken. In about 10 minutes of chatting we discussed price and when they could come to my home. Sean called ahead to let me know he was on his way. He was on time and very polite. Also, he was very respectful of my request for a no-contact process. Once he arrived we talked on the phone and I could pay online. He emailed a receipt including the warranty. Great process and a fair price. I would use them again.
