I was incredibly impressed with this plumber. He was able to come out the same day and complete two toilet installs. He was respectful of our home and was very kind to our multiple (and very curious) pets. He completed the work in a timely manner and cleaned up after himself. Quite frankly, his services are a steal! Allen is easy to work with and very knowledgable. In the future, I plan to have some upgrades to my house and he kindly provided some recommendations on contractors and electricians. This spring I will be having a utility tub moved and I plan on contacting Spitfire Plumbing to complete the job.

Fast, decent fixture, much more robust handle than original contractor version it replaced. Required saw and blow torch. Water flow a little bit funky (split) coming out of the spigot, but when on all the way, no problem.

Needed new soffit board to replace rotting boards above bay window, that also contained a wasp nest or two. He also cleaned rain gutters. Things he did that were great: 1) showed up for initial meeting and to give estimate ON TIME! 2) performed beautiful work over bay window with new soffit boards complete with paint job; and removed wasps nest, 3) reasonably priced for this single-income household, 4) felt totally comfortable with him and appreciated his gracious attitude towards me as a female client. Was not condescending (which is my experience with a few contractors in the past). Will definitely ask him to return to help with more "fixer-upper" jobs as well as some more complex renovations.

He arrived when he said he would, and he got our sewer line cleaned out. His charges were explained beforehand, so no big surprises. He also was able to get a snake through a floor drain that at least three other plumbers couldn't.

Will Marshall is very detailed, very competent, in all that he does. He makes sure to do exactly what is wanted, offers suggestions for ways you might not have thought of in providing you with the best outcome. He works steadily, quietly, and efficiently, leaving the site clean and shining. We had plumbing issues, and are very satisfied with his work. We discovered that he is a general contractor and plan to hire him for a major home rehab. Highly recommend Will!

Picture this. ...a flooded house, with endless tussle with the insurance company and a gloomy moldy smell , until I met Julio. From hard wood floor installation, plumbing in the bathroom, installing a storm door, refinishing partial basement from water damage to helping with other handy jobs that were not even part of the agreement, because he is s perfectionist. The best part of it all was his professionalism. He treated my home with respect and I am happy to come home again.

I contacted this contractor as we've had difficulty finding a dependable, fair and reasonably priced handyman that would treat our customers with the respect they deserve. I was very impressed with John as he arrived to our intial meeting several minutes early, was professional in explaining the services he provides, what he excels in, as well as the primary focus of his work. He assessed our needs, effectively documented the current condition and then proceeded to purchase the necessary supplies at our local Home Depot (it was 1/2 mile away) and completed the work promptly. Upon checking the work completed, it was exactly as we had hoped and the customers were very pleased with his services. In fact, he pointed out several issues which had not been identified which we'll address at a later date. This was our first experiench with John and Thumbtack....they're both batting 1.000.

In my 20 years of experience as an investor in construction, remodeling, and renovating homes to both sell and rent, Ray Lombardi of Stanley Custom Homes is one of the very best contractors we have ever hired. Ray has now done seven whole house remodels for us, and we could not be more pleased with both the quality and the timeliness of each of the projects that he has done for us. Ray has excellent attention to detail, strong sense of pride in his workmanship, fantastic project management skills, is an excellent communicator, and a person of unquestionable integrity. He has consistently done whatever it took to meet and exceed our expectations and deliver a very high-quality product within the timeframe he promised. The projects that he has completed for us have sold or rented very quickly for top dollar, a tribute to the quality and craftsmanship that Ray puts into every job. His expertise spans new construction, high-end home remodeling, as well as select smaller projects where quality and timely performance is important.

Steve Johnson has helped me with plumbing services for years. He runs an honest business. I have had the blessing of knowing him both professionally and as a neighbor and friend for over 11 yrs. I recommend him as a business man, because I know who he is and how he does business. You can learn a lot about a person in 11 yrs. What stands out to me is that he always is willing to help people out with his skill. That says a lot about a person.

Steve took the time to go through my house to discuss things I would like to do, and made some recommendations that are within my budget. He was also willing to show me how to do some simple things myself. I own a duplex, so there is two or more of everything. Steve showed me how to properly insulate a door on my very old house so I could do the remaining 10 myself. So, basically, he was willing to take money out of his own pocket to save me some. He is also very flexible; willing to work within my budget; and willing to do a job in stages vs all at once, making it easier for me to save money toward each stage. I haven't found that with contractors, who want me to spend thousands of dollars up front to do something that can be done over time, or who never provided a quote or returned my calls after seeing my home and learning of my budget constraints.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How often do you clean a septic tank?

For homeowners with a septic system, it’s important to have a regular septic cleaning schedule. To protect ground and drinking water, the Environmental Protection Agency recommends residential septic cleaning every three years. Many septic system companies state that you can maintain a healthy system with regular septic cleanings every three to five years. In addition to cleaning, a septic tank inspection once a year will uncover problems and can save you thousands in cleanup and repair.

When waste goes into your septic system, it separates into three parts. The solids (sludge) drop to the bottom, wastewater floats in the middle, and a layer of scum rises to the top. Regularly scheduled cleanings prevent the sludge in your septic tank from building up and clogging your tank, leading to an overflow. Pricing for a standard septic cleaning ranges between $200 and $500, with the national average cost at $315. It’s easier, more cost-effective, and better for your home health to keep your septic tank maintained.

What are plumbers and what do they do?

Plumbers are skilled professionals who are trained to install and maintain pipes and systems for drinking water, sewage and drainage. They usually have trained through four- to five-year training programs, which include apprenticeships, via trade schools and community colleges. Plumbers’ areas of expertise typically go beyond pipes to include mathematics, blueprint reading, plumbing codes and water distribution. They handle plumbing emergencies, such as broken pipes or clogged drains, and install and maintain everything from a new piping system to a replacement faucet. Plumbers also know how to install bathtubs and showers, toilets, water heaters and dishwashers. Plumbers may work on residential or commercial sites, sometimes designing and laying out a pipe system during construction.

Who pumps septic tanks?

Septic system professionals pump septic tanks. Pros in different states will have different licensing and certification regulations. Make sure the company you hire is licensed and certified, is a legitimate business, and has the appropriate insurance. Damage to your septic system could cost thousands of dollars in cleanup and repair, so it’s best to hire a qualified professional from the start.

Using an industrial-strength vacuum hose connected to a tanker truck, the septic tank company will pump out the contents of your tank. First they break up the scum of the top layer, then mix the sludge (on the bottom) into the wastewater for removal. To get all the sludge and scum from the tank, pros may use a tool called a septage spoon that loosens stubborn waste from the sides of the tank. After the tank is hosed down and empty, it is inspected for any cracks or leaks that could lead to trouble in the future. The waste in the truck is then transported and disposed of at a waste management treatment center, a cesspool or an approved dumping site.

When should you clean a septic system?

Experts agree that you should clean your septic system every three to five years for optimal system health and safe water. You should also have it inspected every year to catch minor issues before they become major. If you think you may be overdue for a septic cleaning, here are signs that you should call a pro immediately.

  • You’re at capacity: If the bottom of the scum layer is within six inches of the bottom of the tank’s outlet or if the top of the sludge layer is within 12 inches of the outlet, your tank needs to be pumped, according to the EPA.
  • It stinks: If you can smell wastewater, call a pro right away to clean your tank, pipes and field.
  • Sewage backup: Raw sewage backing up into the pipes in your home is no fun. The pros can pump out your pipes, clean your tanks and clear any clogs, but it will be a complex and messy job.
  • Pooling water: Water collecting around your tank or drain field can be a sign you need to clean your septic system.
  • Super grass: If the grass above your septic system drain field suddenly gets vibrantly green and lush, the septic tank leak could be leaking sewage and fertilizing your lawn in unwanted ways. Call a pro to inspect it right away.

How much is it to clean a septic tank?

Nobody wants their septic tank to back up. Regular septic cleaning and pumping is important to keep your ground and drinking water protected from harmful bacteria. The Environmental Protection Agency recommends septic system cleaning every three years. The national average cost for a septic tank specialist is $315. Costs for septic cleaning may vary based on where you live, how large your septic tank is, and how long it has been since the last cleaning. If it’s been many years since you’ve had your tank cleaned, the process of breaking up and removing the solids may take longer and could cost more. Typical residential septic tanks range in size from 1,000 to 2,500 gallons. The price range for septic cleaning usually averages $200-$500, with varying by tank size. Repairs or replacement parts will also add to your cost. To keep your septic tank in good health between cleanings, only flush approved items such as toilet paper, and don’t rely on your garbage disposal for composting. Items that don’t break down easily (like lemon rinds or feminine hygiene products) can back up the septic system, leading to clogs and overflow. If you smell the unmistakable odor of sewage or can see sewage bubbling up above your drain field, call for a septic cleaning immediately.
