Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

  • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
  • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
  • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
  • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

What’s the difference between an interior designer and an interior decorator?

Interior designers operate more on the architectural side of building projects. In conjunction with architects, they work on the design of a building or home to best suit the needs of the users or residents. Interior designers are generally experienced in construction and understand how architectural planning works, according to NewSchool of Architecture & Design. And some interior designers will perform the duties of an interior decorator.

Interior decorators, on the other hand, work with fabrics, accessories, furniture, art, colors, textures and materials to make the inside look fashionable and pleasant.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How much do interior designers charge?

You can hire an interior design for a job as basic as a one-room consultation or as complex as supervising the design of an entire new home, helping with space planning, choosing color palettes, and shopping for furniture, flooring and artwork. The size and scope of the job will determine how much an interior designer charges; the average national cost for an interior designer ranges from $75 to $100 or more per hour. Other cost factors include the person’s reputation — interior designers to the stars are usually more expensive — and region. Most interior designers charge an average of $100-$225 for an initial consultation, but some will charge an hourly rate, usually starting at an average of $50, for larger projects that require extensive consultations. Hourly rates may be available for smaller projects, such as redecorating a living room or staging a home for sale; for instance, shopping and consulting can cost an average of $75 to $100 per hour, while staging costs and average $95 per hour. For many homeowners, a percentage of an interior designer’s cost is recouped through the professional discounts they receive from their vendors.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

  • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
  • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
  • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
  • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

When I decided to remodel my home, a main consideration was whether to work with an interior designer or not. The main reason was the budget. I have worked with an interior designer in the past and was familiar with the process. The key for me was to find someone that would understand the vision and concept of our plans and have the ability to integrate these plans with their professional expertise and resources. After researching and interviewing various interior designers and I finally found Bonnie @ Arranged by Design. I liked Bonnie because she listened carefully and understood what we were trying to accomplish while being and personable and genuine. She was sensitive to our needs and was able to translate our ideas and budget into a realistic plan. The saying “you don’t know what you don’t know” describes what a person begins to realize when encountering the extent and complexity of an interior decorating project performed correctly. Murphy’s Law figures greatly in these situations also. I realized that having a person I could trust and depend on was key to the overall success. After lengthy discussions with Bonnie regarding everything involved in the project, I realized that Arranged by Design was the one for me. Bonnie has excellent taste and resources. She knows where to find the right products and materials. She led me in new and different directions that provided beautiful solutions. The skilled workers and subcontractors she works with are first rate and artists at their craft. They are a pleasure to work with. Bonnie takes great care to select only the best. She has great rapport with them and they are very responsive to her. When issues and questions come up, as they always will in a job like this, Bonnie is very accessible and addresses them quickly and effectively. She becomes your ally, always checking with you to make sure you are happy and satisfied with the progress and the product as well as staying within budget. Anyone that has embarked on similar projects with contractors can attest to the need for a qualified professional when things don’t go as expected or proposed. As a business, Arranged by Design is well organized and runs very efficiently. Overall we are extremely pleased with the service and expertise provided by Arranged by Design. I would recommend Bonnie without the slightest hesitation. The house was totally transformed into a beautiful space, taking on the look of something 2-3 times the actual cost. The craftsmanship along with Bonnie's choice of design, materials and color schemes are outstanding. The floor design and layout was also transformational giving the home a completely new and refreshing look. Bonnie is a truly gifted interior designer who has helped me realize my aspirations and has exceeded all of my expectations while at the same time helping me stay on budget. I truly could not have accomplished this without Bonnie's help. So in retrospect, I view the hiring of an interior designer such as Arranged by Design, an investment rather than an additional cost.

We had a wonderful experience working with Danielle. We needed help with selecting paint colors for our living room, kitchen cabinets, and basement accent wall. Danielle saw our vision instantly and made really good recommendations. We love how the colors turned out! She also helped us pick out flooring for the main level and put us in touch with a contractor for installation. Additionally, we found Danielle's blog posts on tinselandtwig.com really helpful. We picked out the paint color for the accent wall from her blog post on 2021 paint palettes! We would work with Danielle again and recommend her to anyone who's looking for hassle-free, reliable professional help for their interior design projects!

If you are looking for help decorating your house look no further. Stacy is your gal. I refer to her to my friends as the Joanna Gains of MSP for rustic chic (although she can do any aesthetic you are dreaming of)! I hired her to help me furnish and decorate my new construction home. She was always very attentive and had a wonderful game plan to help me tackle such a huge task. She came over and measured my home and took pictures. She then gave me a 3D rendering of my home decorated! It was STUNNING. We then went on several shopping trips to buy the large pieces together. Later on we went on trips to find the perfect accessories at places an interior designer would only know about! Stacy was a great listener and was flexible if any pieces didnt speak to me. She was happy to point out other options that would look just as nice. Finally, Stacy got some amazing designer discounts at the large box stores. On the shopping front Stacy is happy to do as little or as much as you need! She can go with you or tell you what to find, whatever your preference. She is also a master stager and thriftstore expert too! Stacy not only does typical furniture placement, shopping, and decorating...she is also an architect who can make a ton of the creative projects she proposes in your home for you. You don't have to hire yet another person. Wonder woman I tell you!!! Stacy made us a custom mud room bench built in HERSELF. She used reclaimed wood from all over the state and from barns! She also made us a custom chalkboard wall. Stacy's daughter took the pictures for our collage wall that will line our steps, they are the things of dreams! Stacy also picked out a wonderful reclaimed wood wall paper for above the fireplace that is unlike anything I have ever seen. To sum up it Stacy is a joy to work with, she is a friend at this point. She can literally do it all. She is flexible on all counts and can help you as little or as much as you like at a very fair price point. If you haven't already, just hire stay. You won't regret it. -Tory
