A 15foot laundrytub drain line became completely clogged wth sludge. It took technician Bruce only an hour to bore out the line. It now drains better than it ever did.

Gary did a great job cleaning out a main drain when we needed him in a pinch. He was courteous, professional, knowledgeable, and very easy to work with - I couldn't expect anything better and will be using him again for any future plumbing needs.

I contact Marvel and Ben gave a number of times he could come that would work with my schedule, the morning of the service Ben texted me telling me he was on his way and gave a ETA. Ben quickly found the problem and began clearing the sewer drain, after the drain was clear he inspected it with a camera and gave future maintenance tips. He was upfront with prices before starting work and did not try to upsell.

Had a clogged drain, they were very prompt. THere was miscommunication with tenant and calling me, that created a return visit, but they resolved that amicably. Happy with service

Good service. I had a clogged drain. They said they could come between 3 and 5, but would call if they could get there sooner. They called and were able to come at 1. The clog was hard to get through- took them about an hour, but they got it cleared. They offered some options and other free advice. Charged what they quoted (109). I'd hire them again. The other plumber I talked to quoted "$79 total price" but when I phoned him, he said there was a "trip charge" of about $30 (like he could clear a drain from his office without making a trip?)

Asked Joe for an estimate on a clogged bathroom sink drain, main drain maintenance clearing. We ended up reviewing other projects as well. Joe showed up on time, assessed the individual projects but also evaluated overall household use. Gave a thorough estimate on immediate projects as well as others (water heaters, laundry tub, etc). Joe gives an estimate per job not per hour. I asked him to clear bathroom drain on the spot and we scheduled main drain for next morning. Joe was on time, reasonable cost (higher than some, less than others), very thorough, very clean, responsive communicator and listener, trustworthy.

Water heater was replaced, kitchen drain was repaired, and new bathroom vanity was installed. Glad you noticed the rusted drain which needed repair, so we didn't spring a leak later.

Brian was quick to respond and offered to come out to give an 'educated bid'. He and his associate came, and gave a very reasonable bid, and we accepted - and he agreed to do the job that day! It was going to be 'just' installation of a laundry sink in the garage, but Brian was so conscientious, he found that there was a leak in the controls of the washer, and a couple of other problems with hoses, etc. He ended up completely updating/redoing the washer attachments, AND did a fabulous job of installing new water lines, drain, etc., and stayed till the job was complete - which was 8:30 p.m.!! I would have no hesitation to recommend Brian - he is such a capable individual, a diligent worker, and very fair with his charges. VERY glad we found him on Thumbtack!!

James contacted me right away, and trhe day we first talked, he was able to squeeze me in at the end of his day. I was thrilled as we were in the middle of a bathroom remodel and I had not had a main floor toilet for 3 months or a bath tub drain. He was prompt, uinderstood my "little knowledge" of what might be needed and what parts to bring with. He installed a bath drain and new pipe as well as hooked up our toilet. The service was efficient and his pricing was fair. He gave a range over the phone and his price fell with in that. I did like that he offered several pieces of advice about how to clean and maintain good plumbing in our 1950's house. I look forward to having him do more work in our kitchen in the spring. I would recommend him with any plumbing project.

John (Ngu) Tran responded to an emergency request last week for plumbing services at my hair salon in Uptown, Twist Hair Studio. Not only did he make himself available right away, but he performed excellent and efficient work. Our problem was with the drain from our hair-wash bowls; it was plugged and we couldn't run water without the floor flooding. Therefore we could not wash clients' hair; in our industry, if we can't wash hair for even a few hourss we lose alot of business. John came to the rescue and had us back in business before the first customer of the day. And he cleaned up the area so it looked like nothing had ever happened. We will be calling him the next time we need any type of plumbing services. Joy N.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What are plumbers and what do they do?

Plumbers are skilled professionals who are trained to install and maintain pipes and systems for drinking water, sewage and drainage. They usually have trained through four- to five-year training programs, which include apprenticeships, via trade schools and community colleges. Plumbers’ areas of expertise typically go beyond pipes to include mathematics, blueprint reading, plumbing codes and water distribution. They handle plumbing emergencies, such as broken pipes or clogged drains, and install and maintain everything from a new piping system to a replacement faucet. Plumbers also know how to install bathtubs and showers, toilets, water heaters and dishwashers. Plumbers may work on residential or commercial sites, sometimes designing and laying out a pipe system during construction.

How do you find a good plumber?

Whether you need a plumber to perform drain repair, install a new fixture, or replace rusty pipes, you need to make sure you hire someone reliable who will finish your job on time and within budget. Start by asking the plumbers on your short list these questions:

    • What is the total cost? Make sure your estimate includes materials and labor. Find out whether the plumber will be providing the materials and whether you’re being charged an hourly rate (which is variable) or a flat fee.
    • Is removal and cleanup included in the job? Some plumbers leave behind old parts, while others include the cleanup in the cost.
    • Is the work guaranteed? Find out whether the work (as well as the parts or fixtures) are guaranteed under a warranty.

Follow these additional tips for confidently hiring a plumber or other skilled professional.
