Excellent experience! Jerry fixed a leaky shower and sink for me. He was knowledgeable, professional and offered great service at a reasonable price. He will be the first person I call for any future home repair or remodel job.

Toby was professional, very hardworking, friendly and competitively priced. We hired him to expand our existing deck, replace the stairs, and add a pergola. I am beyond pleased and will be hiring Toby any time I have a construction project.

Jim was extremely helpful in evaluating my roof. We ended up only doing small repairs as he recommended the roof not be replaced. His recommendation was honest and a much appreciated cost savings. I would highly recommend him and he will be my first call for future roofing needs.

We had a very large job - painting the exterior of a three story house, cornice repair, tuck pointing, painting a garage, and staining a privacy fence, and a variety of other small repairs to the exterior of our home. Dominic was very prompt and responsive from the outset - he was the first person to respond to our request for quotes, his quote was delivered quickly, it was very detailed, very professional, and very fair for the amount of work we needed done, which was extensive. He was very collaborative with us on choosing colors, advising us of the best way to proceed with repairs and flexible when unexpected repairs and issues came up. He was very good about communicating with us throughout the process, and when it came time to settle up, there were no unexpected costs or issues, he stuck very much to the original quote, which was refreshing. He was honest and really went above and beyond what was expected. The work done was of very good quality, the painting in particular. He was meticulous about the aesthetics of how the job turned out. We are very pleased with the outcome of the work, and love the new look of our home. We would happily recommend Dominic and his crew, and will be hiring him again for other work we need done. This was a very extensive job, and as our home is over one hundred years old, it was a complicated and difficult job. His attitude was wonderful, and the work done was excellent.

John and his brother Mario's complete kitchen, and flooring work was the best thing that ever happened to my kitchen. Barrale Brothers Painting and Remodeling, LLC had performed an excellent, high quality work remodeling my kitchen. Flooring as well was outstanding. I am extremely happy with the outcome and have asked John to give me a bid for the main bathroom to be renovated next.

Don did a great job on our first project, installing a bathroom window and ventilation fan. He came to me with great suggestions, responded quickly to any questions I had and maintained great communication throughout the process. He also did it at a very fair price. We were so happy with his work we immediately got him started on a much larger project remodeling our upstairs.

JV and Tuscany Restorations did a phenomenal job on our home in Maryland Heights and definitely went above and beyond. Great lines of professional communication and was able to match a competitors price. Timely in their response, with accurate quotes and completed project in scheduled time. We were in a time crunch in order to get approval from the city inspector before closing date, and JV and his crew were up to the challenge and exceeded expectations. They replaced our roof and painted the entire exterior of our home. JV personally showed up to our home when the city inspector was re-inspecting to make sure their work met the needs/specifications of the city inspector. I've never seen service like that and neither had our real estate agent. I would highly recommend JV and Tuscany Restorations for any and all home improvement projects!!!

We were looking for a professional contractor who could build/remodel bathroom in my basement. Troy was very helpful in explaining the process and cost efficient. He totally built the bathroom from the rough ins to the finish product. He was respectful, honest, on time, hardworking and went out of his way to make sure we were totally satisfied with the overall projects. We have referred him to several people who need/needed home improvements done. There are pictures of the project on both of his websites. We will always use him for any of our home improvements or repairs in the future.

I had gotten a couple estimates on remodeling my 2 bathrooms. One was from Bath Fitters and the other from STL Design & Build. I was very impressed with the knowledge of my salesman, Mark, and I was very surprised when his estimate came in less than Bath Fitters. The materials, in my opinion, were much better looking and I believe added more value to my home than the BF's surround. Everyone that I worked with at STL D&B were very courteous, arrived when scheduled, worked very hard and did an awesome job! They did everything I asked of them and more; and I would highly recommend STL Design & Build for any home remodeling project you may have.

We own a home in Kirkwood and wanted the lower level bathroom renovated. I used Thumbtack to find a contractor. Jay and Gloria Jarvis of Ecostruction LLC responded to my request for bids. This was the first time I sought a contractor using an online referral, and I admit I was skeptical. We received three responses from contractors and I contacted them all for bids. Jay and Gloria Jarvis, owners of Ecostruction LLC, impressed me with their promptness in getting together information I needed and meeting with me to discuss the job. The bathroom required a total tear down and renovation. From the first appointment with Ecostruction LLC to the completion of the work, they were knowledgeable and professional. They provided comparative costs for labor and products for any and all design elements we wanted to consider. In other words, it wasn't always their taste preferences that they cared about; they cared about what we wanted and what fit our budget. First and foremost, they wanted the best end result, not just in design but functionality for us. At the end of each day, the work area was cleaned up satisfactorily. We always knew when to expect their arrival the next day. Their expertise in renovation made this bathroom rehab a pleasant and gratifying experience. We now have a gem of a guest bath, complete with a Mr. Steam Shower. While Jay takes care of a highly trained crew, Gloria helps the clients choose appliances, fixtures, colors, flooring, and everything that adds the perfect finishing touch at the best price. They do not stop until everything is completed to the customer's satisfaction. The installation and follow-up far outshine other contractors we have had work on our house projects. My Five Star rating reflects my satisfaction with Ecostruction LLC and the trust I have in them to recommend them to others.

Based on my personal experience, I would highly recommend Dave and Remolding Solutions, LLC. Dave was a tremendous help with a very bad home build construction situation I was dealing with. A previous general contractor (GC) I had hired with a different company proved to be unscrupulous. The previous GC was an epic fail as a business person and a disgrace to the construction industry who left my home build unfinished, in disrepair and caused other damages to my property. The situation had left me in a state of utter exasperation, frustration and on the verge of despair. Dave and Remodeling Solutions, Inc came to the rescue; restored my sanity and faith in mankind. His knowledge, willingness to assist, business ethics, genuine kindness and concern were invaluable. I am forever grateful for Dave's help and standard of excellence in conducting business!

We asked Keith to demolish our art installation in a park. Although it took a little longer than we thought it would, he was very pleasant and professional. He thought through what the job would require (like dirt and grass seed to restore the park) and completed the job before our deadline.

There was a ton of work to be done for a hail damage insurance claim that affected 30+ homes. All new roofs, with a lot of siding, gutter, fascia repairs. Even garage door and garage door trim repairs were needed. Everything looks great and there were even things that were exposed as not being related to hail damage that they either repaired at no additional charge, or worked with the home owners and association to get those issues fixed instead of just covering them up again. Residents in the subdivision have even hired them for additional remodels and additions based on the work they did on the hail claim. We have also hired them to repair the pool house, which also had hail damage. Much better than working with one of the big name roofing companies

On time. Efficient and quality work. Very fair price. I work with a number of contractors. Brad, by far, performed some of the best quality work and a fair price of the numerous contractors that I have done business with.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

  • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
  • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
  • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
  • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.

Be sure to check out our smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.
