Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does landscaping cost per square foot?

The cost of landscaping can vary widely based on the type of plants you wish to have, the amount of grading required, the condition of the land before work begins, and other factors. Adding in designer or high-end landscaping, as well as hardscaping such as sidewalks, walls, or patios will add to the cost. To find out how much your landscaping will cost, contact landscapers near you.

Is hiring a landscaper worth it?

A landscaper is worth it if you don't want to invest a significant amount of time and effort into planting, trimming, raking, weeding and performing other operations on your garden or yard. Hiring a landscaper to perform regular maintenance in your yards and complete bigger projects is valuable if you’re looking to sell your house. A professional landscaper can make your house more appealing to potential buyers.

Some landscapers may perform maintenance duties — remove leaves, mow lawns, trim trees and shrubs, etc. —  but they can also help you bring bigger projects to life. This may include adding a misting system, an outdoor fireplace, water features, artificial turf, a patio and much more.

Start contacting landscapers near you to get free estimates and start planning your project today.

How much does landscaping cost?

The price of landscaping varies widely due to the range of choices that can be made, but you can expect to pay anywhere from $320 and $20,000 for your landscaping work. The national average cost for a landscaping project is $2,600.

Factors like the choice of plants, the amount and type of hardscaping, the square footage of your landscaped area, and the region you live in will have a significant effect on your landscaping cost.

Where can you buy landscaping rocks?

You can shop for landscaping rocks from a variety of different sources. The first option is large chain retail stores specializing in home improvement and gardening. Often, landscaping rocks like slate and other slabs arrive on pallets and are sold in bulk, giving you a great deal. Your local landscaping store also carries rocks, and you may even have a stone or quarry seller nearby who can sell you the rocks you need. When in doubt, contact landscaping companies near you to see if they have rocks you can purchase.

What is landscaping?

Landscaping is the intentional placement and maintenance of living plants on an area of land or in your yard. This can include trees, lawn, flowers, bushes and other plant life and often incorporates mulch and other organic matter. The primary purpose of landscaping is to provide beauty to the house or building it surrounds.

Many landscaping companies also offer design, architecture and construction services. For example, they can help you design a yard that incorporates a patio, deck, pool, fire pit, lighting, walkways, retaining walls and more.

How much does landscaping improve home value?

Landscaping your property can boost the value of your home between 5% and 15%, according to Better Homes & Gardens. They specify that this is the amount of value added when you upgrade the condition of your landscaping from poor to good, though these terms are subjective.

What is landscape design?

Landscaping design refers to the art of analyzing an existing landscape, planning how to transform it through flora and fauna design and working with a client to ensure goals are met. Landscape designers may completely transform an outdoor space or make minor modifications to enhance it. They may also call for grading and the construction of hardscaping surfaces like walkways or patios to add to the enjoyment of the space.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

Outstanding landscaping work. We have a fairly large area of landscaping to be done and they were exceptional in their understanding of what we needed in all parts of the property. They gave us an estimate and were able to start work promptly. They did exactly what we wanted. They also took the debris away and cleaned up the area well. They have a team of workers that are polite and hard working. Their experience in landscaping shows. They are very responsive to my questions and they contacted me prior to coming out to the house. They made the whole process so easy. Its truly a breath of fresh air to work with a company that is responsive and professional. I looking forward to having them back to do more work. It was a pleasure to do business with them.

DJ's landscaping did a good job with a difficult block wall rebuild project at my property. They are very accommodating and worked with me and my budget to accomplish the repair and then made the garden beds and front yard look excellent, especially when the grass seed grows in. They even mowed the lawn before they finished! I appreciate the hard work and integrity that they showed during the project. I am definitely calling them for my next landscaping project. 👍👍👍👍👍

After several months of receiving bids just to have no one show up, I decided to look for someone on Thumbtack. I reached out to Anthony. He responded the same day and came out to look at it the same day. He gave us a bid and started/completed the work, the same week. Great communication and must I say, our landscaping is so beautiful!!! The transformation is amazing! I would definitely recommend Anthony to my family and friends. My husband and I will hire him on our landscaping projects going forward. Thanks for doing a great job!

Working with Home Care Landscaping was simple and easy at first. The job was done quickly and everything looked squared away, or so I thought. They said they would come out and inspect the work a few weeks later but never did. In the weeks and months following the installation of the sod, a majority of it started dying. I followed the directions for watering and caring for the glass to the letter, but it was no use. I attempted to contact Home Care Landscaping to see if there was something else I needed to be doing, but received only one response(without information) and no follow up. Since then my lawn looks very bad and I've had a lawn care professional come and inspect the lawn who said he believes that the sod was laid incorrectly and that it will be a significant cost and effort to correct.

Working with new look landscaping was a pleasurable experience from start to finish and I would recommend them for your landscaping needs. After having a 33' tree removed, my backyard was a total wreck. I had a number of hardscaping and softscaping items I wanted to do from a design plan a local nursery provided to me. They were able to help me with all of the items on the design plan. They built a wonderful wooden deck, complemented with a rich silver flagstone. They cut out new garden beds for the 5 new trees and 6 new shrubs that they planted. They built a 10'x2' raised garden bed, and tilled and seeded a large portion of my backyard. Every step of the way they took extra care with the project and asked good questions. It was a big project and I'm very happy with how it turned out.

The lawn service was fine but I specifically asked them not to trim within 6 inches of 4 baby fruit trees and they did, damaging the saplings extensively. Almost $200 worth of trees shot for what ought to be basic landscaping knowledge even if I didn't tell you specifically not to trim near them. Would never use again. They're lucky they even got paid.

Hoehns Landscaping did an awesome job mulching leaves in my large yard. With many big trees in my backyard it isn’t until late in the year before all the leaves are on the ground. At this time of year it’s difficult to find a responsive pro. Hoehns was responsive and professional. They did a great job on my yard and I’m sure they’ll do the same for others. I totally recommend them. Thanks, Hoehns!

Chris transformed the front of our house. We went from a row of old shrubs to a beautifully landscaped front yard. Chris was extremely helpful in planning the project and choosing plant material. He built a stone retaining wall around the corner of the house. He was professional, easy to contact, and easy to work with. He worked with my budget and got the job done very quickly. I located Chris on thumbtack and I highly recommend him!

We hired Matt do tear out 4 rose bushes in our front yard, tear out some beds filled with weeds, add a small retaining wall, and fill the retaining wall beds with soil and rock. He was on time and finished the job in just over 1 day. I was shocked at how quickly he worked! He cleaned up after himself, hauled everything away, and the work was amazing! We love the result and will definitely hire Matt again for future landscaping needs!

Recently my wife and I had some landscaping work performed at our home in Crestwood, MO. Our first and only choice was Mr. Chris Clohessy from Tri-County Hardscapes, LLC. From the moment we initiated contact with Chris, we experienced nothing less than excellent service and craftsmanship. He clearly is concerned for not only the look and appearance of his customer’s homes, but also manages to balance this with an economical and reasonable estimate of the job itself. The overall outcome is an outstanding looking design with neat, tidy, and efficient implementation. Chris is ever punctual, forthright, and true to his word and contract. We are very pleased with his work and would not hesitate to call on him again for his services. Sincerely, Scott and Karen S.

Working with Chris and Tri County Hardscape was a great experience from start to finish. I'd had an unsuccessful beginning to my landscaping hopes - it was hard to get anyone to call us back, let alone show up for appointments. By the time I reached out to Chris, I was exhausted. He was a breath of fresh air! He was responsive, easy to work with, and had great ideas for designing our front yard "face lift." He knew we wanted easy-to-care-for plants and knew just how to place them in the space. He and his crew were so polite and careful when working in our yard, even when they had a dog barking at them nonstop from the window. We could not be more pleased/impressed with the work they did. It looks amazing!

Work was scheduled weeks in advance. I reached out a few days before to confirm start time and was told he could no longer do the work at the scheduled time because his lawn mowing work was behind schedule due to inclimate weather. He only does landscape projects on weekends, and mowing on weekdays. When scheduling the date, I made it very clear the plants were being transferred from another location, and I could not change dates. While he was willing to reschedule for a weekend or two later, my plants would be dead by that time - which he knew at booking. Finding this out a few days before our project start left me scrambling to figure out how to get the work done. I ended up doing it myself. Disappointed in the lack of professionalism and adherence to an agreement.

I had a mature, dying Corkscrew Willow tree that was bordering my neighbor's property and hanging over his telephone and electrical power supply lines. Scott gave me a very reasonable bid compared to other contractors. In fact, it was low enough in comparison that I was a little skeptical as to whether he really knew what he was doing. (I had done tree work years ago working for a landscape architect in the Boston area.) So, I insisted that he come on a day when I could be on site. Scott was very gracious and kept to his word at every step of our client/contractor relationship. He was honest, humble, and he and his team did an outstanding job! They were very conscientious in how they approached the tree removal and made quick work of it. They clearly knew what they were doing! They also did a great job cleaning up. I would strongly recommend Scott and his team to anyone needing tree removal, and I am ashamed that I doubted his capacity to do a great job simply because he quoted me the best price!

Don't waste your time on this guy. Extremely rude and classist. Don't message if you want a reasonable price. I brought him out initially for a quote to till some garden beds in my new house. I told him what price range I was looking for and he negotiated and I said I'd have to think about it and get back to him. We were moving from another house and wanted the front and backyard done so I messaged him to get a quote on that instead. He met me at the other house but this time he was full of attitude. He was rude right away, being sarcastic about what I was asking. He then said "I don't work for $20, then he saw the backyard and the first thing out of his mouth was "your not gonna like this price"--- I was shocked at how much attitude he was giving me at that point, he then said "you have wasted my time and your already wasted it once". I replied "wow, if you have a minimum price that your willing to come out for then you should have said" he then rolled his eyes and walked away. This guy needs business 101 lessons, in that industry that's how it works...you get a quote, sometimes they get the job sometimes you don't. If he had been courteous I may have hired him for a job in my price range $800-900. He will treat you rudely and will only bother if your spending thousands. There are many other good landscapers out there. I just got one for half his asking. Don't call him.
