I contacted several fence companies when we wanted to have our fence built. Andy is the only company that showed up on time. Not only did I have a chance to express how upset with other companies I was, but Andy even came out on a Saturday to provide a bid for our job. Andy was very easy to work with and I can not think of a single time I had a question that was not answered promptly. Andy was even sympathetic to my crazy work schedule. Knowing I have to sleep during the day, he waited to build the portion of our fence until the end of the day. His price was very clear and it was easy to understand how much the total cost would be. I would recommend Andy for any fence job! In fact I kept one of his cards to have my deck and porch repaired in the spring. Could not be happier!!!

I contacted Breckenridge Tree Care to remove a very large birch that was located roughly 4 feet from the front of our house with a root system that was probably going to cause foundation damage sooner rather than later. I also had about 10 large bushes and medium sized trees surrounding our deck that needed to be removed prior to building a new patio. I also had a very large maple tree that needed to be trimmed back and a large tree in our back yard that I wanted removed to allow more space to play catch with the kids. Will of Breckenridge Tree Care responded right away to my request and he arrived the same day to provide an estimate. I was a little apprehensive about having the trees removed because I had never had this type of work done before and so I was worried that the cost would be astronomical. Needless to say, I was very relieved when Will's estimate was very fair and reasonable, especially considering I was having 2 large trees removed, 10 large bushes removed, and a large maple trimmed! He and his crew were able to begin work on the project within the week and they finished the entire job within 2 days! I was very impressed with their professionalism, their work ethic, their pricing, and most of all, their skill at tree removal. It only took about 6 hours for them to take the precariously located 75-foot birch down (as mentioned earlier, it was only 4-feet from our house, located right in front of a large plate glass window and half of the tree was hanging over our neighbors house). Considering all of the work that was completed, there was only one thing that got damaged in the process - a small (brittle) paver stone. I couldn't have asked for a better experience in regards to tree removal and I highly recommend Breckenridge Tree Care!

Milt was always available and helpful in answering my questions and concerns. His employees did an exceptional job of building our decks. They were excellent craftsmen and it was obvious they knew how to build a deck. The project was a lot more expensive than orginally quoted, but we found more and more wood rot as we rechecked the original damage. I feel like the additional cost and reconstruction was necessary to rebuild the deck. We know we will enjoy this new deck for many years to come. We highly recommend Milt and will have him return next year to stain the deck.

Mark was great to work with. Very easy to talk to, he communicated his plans and timing well. Showed up bright and early each day. Seemed committed to getting the job done in a timely manner, no long breaks or disappearing for hours. He restrained my two story mammoth deck and it looks great. Mark also replaced some failing deckboards and repaired some siding woodrot and window woodrot. Price seemed comparable with other but I'm glad I went with him for the individualized service that I received.

Jared and his crew built a wonderful deck using composite decking that we had purchased through Cargo Largo. The assembly of the product was unusual and scared off a few contractors. Jared was confident that he could make it work and he did. He found a compatible product for the fascia and kick plates. He also color matched paint for the posts. We added a small deck and stairs off the side of the house to the original bid. Jared was clear about the additional cost and time. They worked around weather and a few problems that were uncovered. They had to leave one day before they could rework a railing that was out of line. He pointed it out and assured us that it would be redone. I'm not sure I would have noticed. We are very pleased with the decks, and felt that they did excellent work for a very reasonable price.

DMA did a really beautiful job remodeling my house. They completely rehabbed everything, Kitchen, baths, bedrooms, porch, basement, etc. I was living in it during rehab and pushed for a very quick turn around time. He withstood constant prodding and nagging from me but endured and it turned out great! Thanks Dustin!

Gary and his crew built a very nice deck and a handicapped ramp for my wife and me. We were very pleased with the finished deck. They cleaned up all the trash and wood scrapes and the yard looked good when they were through with the project. I had to have some surgery which caused me to be in a wheelchair for about 8 weeks. My wife called Gary the day of the surgery and he dropped everything he was doing and the ramp was built the very next day. I couldn't have asked for a better contractor. Thank you Gary.

I have had Brandon/KC Renovation Concepts do several jobs for me ranging from building a fabulous deck to replacing all of the windows in my home. Brandon is both professional and detailed in the work that he and his crew perform. It is very hard to find someone who cares so much for the customer and takes pride in their work like Brandon does. What is great about this company is that they will take most jobs, big and small. I will continue to refer all of my friends and family to KC Renovations Concepts! Sandy Hall

MCJ and Associates painted our house, repaired some wood rot, raised our screened porch and replaced the screens on the porch. They did excellent work including some creative solutions to solve issues with our sinking deck. I enjoyed having them around and was always comfortable with them coming and going even when I wasn't home.

I contracted with SB Construction Services to tackle a complete rehabilitation for my home, including the addition of a uniquely-designed deck; additions to almost every room in the house, including the kitchen, and an overall expansion of my home in general. I was extremely impressed with the efficiency and professionalism of this talented team of workers. From the initial consultation, to their punctuality and follow-through and extreme attention to every last iota of detail, I remained impressed. They were organized and efficient, and their work radiated years' worth of experience at their craft. I'll never hire any other! A great company!

We actually hired Greg to replace one beam, but you know how that story ends. He's been forthcoming on any issue our house has thrown at us. We've gone from one beam to six, to tearing out our deck, to totally rebuilding it and adding a screened in porch. Greg and his team have been so easy to work with. Thanks again Greg, we look forward to working with you and our never ending project list!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

    Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
