I hired David to repair a damaged area in my basement ceiling. He was very responsive to my texts and emails. He came out, gave an estimate, and the end result was what I expected--no surprises, which is what I was worried about. I couldn't even tell he had been there except for the ceiling was fixed. He left no mess behind at all. I would recommend David to anyone looking for home repairs.

We recently hired Quality Carpentry and Installation to replace and interior door and door jam that was destroyed by a disgruntled dog. Aaron’s attention to detail and cost overruns went above and beyond. Quality Construction is what truly was delivered. We were so impressed we are having Quality Carpentry and Installation do several projects around the house including the construction of a concrete patio and fire pit. I would not hesitate to recommend Quality Carpentry and Installation to anyone. This is a good man and a good company. Joe Heithaus Nixa, Missouri

Dan has completed both small and large remodeling projects in my home. As a retired college professor I will not stand for poor quality, delayed or incomplete work. Dan is punctual, clean, competant ... I consider him a master craftsman. Highly recommended.

JLB Construction just finished a two-story addition to our Table Rock Lake home and we are very pleased with their work. They have the experience to tackle the challenges of matching up to existing structures and utilities and had great foresight in melding our ideas into a great looking and functional home. The owner John, learned his trade in the highly competitive St. Louis area and after 25 years up there moved to Stone County to further pursue his love of the outdoors and fortunately for us, keep on building!JLB Construction just finished a two-story addition to our Table Rock Lake home and we are very pleased with their work. I had called 5 other contractors, none wanted to do or had the "time" to come and look at the job. Most likely because the job was a smaller one. Premiere exterior solutions made the time to send over a representative and create an estimate, then do the job exactly as planned at exactly the estimated dollar amount. We will be expanding the deck soon and we will be calling this company again! I highly recommend this company! Matt H Nixa Mo.

One of C&D's owners, David White, did all the plumbing and wiring for our new house. He started out as a sub for the general contractor, but when the general had problems about 2/3 of the way through, Dave finished the house. Dave is an expert in HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and also very knowledgeable in all other aspects of residential home construction.

I had a major storm damage event at my home and Mike was my contractor. He made a stressful time go so smoothly and took the worry off my shoulders. He was easy to work with, being polite and friendly everyday and he listened to my concerns. He communicates well, letting me know what is coming next and what to expect. His experience, ability and knowledge gave me confidence that the job would be done well. He is neat, keeping the work area clean in my home and outside. He was my advocate with the insurance company which I felt was above and beyond his responsibility. After all the work was finished, you couldn’t tell any damage had been done. I highly recommend Mike Schmidt and will definitely call on him again for future construction/renovation projects.

FAMILY HOMES is heaven sent! They are experienced, and do great quality work at a reasonable price. When we decided to build our first home, we had no clue what we were getting ourselves into. FAMILY HOMES took the time to sit down and explain all the details of what everything was going to cost and what to expect. FAMILY HOMES even sat down with us and helped us design our home. If we had any additional questions or concerns during this whole process, they were very easy to get a hold of and I feel like they actually took their time to understand everything that was going on. The contractor is very friendly, family-oriented and honest person. He saves you money and still provides quality work. I am very happy with our home, and strongly recommend FAMILY HOMES to my friends and family who are planning to build a home or have other projects around the house.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

When should you hire a contractor?

A few home remodeling projects can be done by an ambitious DIY-minded homeowner or local handyman, but many are best completed by a professional home renovation contractor. You should hire a contractor when you’re planning a large project that takes time, machinery or large tools, and several workers; a kitchen remodel, new bathroom or home addition will be most successful with a licensed, expert contractor at the helm. It’s particularly important to have a professional contractor on board for construction, electrical, plumbing and HVAC projects that require inspections to meet local building codes. Of course, you can hire a contractor for smaller projects, too, if you prefer to let an expert handle things like addition or removal of a wall, small framing projects, or anything that requires a permit.

You should hire a contractor when you’re ready to start a remodeling project and you have plans, a budget and a timeline for the work in hand, but before any remodeling work begins.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
