Stephen was amazing and helped us find a great deal on an AC unit within one day of contact. He even worked on a holiday and provided an extra high powered fan while we waited (it was over 90 F in our house). He was very easy to talk to about our issue and was fair every step of the way. We will definitely use him for future projects.

My experience with Thumbtack is very limited and matter of fact have only used it once to find someone to tile my laundry room that was in despair in regards to the condition of the flooring. I looked at several contractors on Thumbtack but decided to go with Samuel Kasery as he appeared to be an honest professional, fair in pricing, and experienced at his trade. Samuel did a superb job in re-tiling my laundry room to include meeting me at Home Depot on a Sunday (his off day) to ensure I purchased the right materials for the job. Since this job, Samuel has come back to my house per request and done additional minor flooring work as well. Not only is Samuel a true professional, I regard him as a christian friend of mine. He is always standing by to receive my next request in the renovation of my home. He is the best of best!!

Was having problems with my riding lawn mower and had no way to get it to repair shop. Called Young & Son and he was there the next morning and had repairs done and I was cutting grass in no time. I mentioned that I had not been able to crank my pressure washer in over a year. While he was there he checked it out, got a couple of parts and had it up and running before he left. I would definitely recommend them for any small engine repairs or other things around the house and yard.

Big C Construction did a great job replacing our roof. They even caught a measurement error our insurance company made. The crew did an excellent job cleaning up, also, which was a huge worry of mine as we have dogs, and I would hate for them to step on a nail. They also managed to avoid crushing our flowers that were planted right in front of the house. Overall, we are very satisfied with the quality of work and the professionalism of Big C Construction!

The Job: Painting the walls and ceilings, as well as correcting the many problems that the previous painter had left behind before quitting half-way through the job! Mr. Tucker did an excellent job. He accompanied me to the paint shop at Home Depot and helped them match the paint used by the previous painter. He then completed the job he was hired to do-painting the walls and the ceilings. Next, he corrected the mess of the paint job that the previous painter had left behind. He went through the rest of the house and touched up the areas that needed attention. He then cleaned up nicely, not only his but the other painters' mess. He was always on time, responsive to phone calls and text messages, and polite and respectful. Hire him if you want some painting done right.

Jessica is THE best housekeeper you will find! If I were to write her job description it would not begin to describe the way she cleans my house. After Jessica cleans my house, it not only looks cleaner, but I can breath better! She conveys something too often missing in today's fast world....pride in workmanship. It is without reservations that I would recommend Jessica to anyone needing a housekeeper.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.

When should you hire a contractor?

A few home remodeling projects can be done by an ambitious DIY-minded homeowner or local handyman, but many are best completed by a professional home renovation contractor. You should hire a contractor when you’re planning a large project that takes time, machinery or large tools, and several workers; a kitchen remodel, new bathroom or home addition will be most successful with a licensed, expert contractor at the helm. It’s particularly important to have a professional contractor on board for construction, electrical, plumbing and HVAC projects that require inspections to meet local building codes. Of course, you can hire a contractor for smaller projects, too, if you prefer to let an expert handle things like addition or removal of a wall, small framing projects, or anything that requires a permit.

You should hire a contractor when you’re ready to start a remodeling project and you have plans, a budget and a timeline for the work in hand, but before any remodeling work begins.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
