Patrick H. says, "John did a very through and professional job reinstalling a range hood fan for us. We first had him come and consult on whether we needed a new hood or if we should start with a new. We replaced our kitchen backsplash and couldn’t get the range hood mounted back correctly due to poor installation of the old ductwork. John made updates to the ducting and made a few modifications to the duct itself that covered some tile work mistakes as well. As the old hood had poorly been installed , it now operates better than before with the improvements that he made. John was able to do all this for much less than the cost of a new hood + installation. We are very pleased with his work."See more

FAQs

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Yes, you can install a ceiling fan yourself if you have the right tools and some electrical experience. However, this is a project that involves wiring and securely mounting a heavy fixture, so safety is key. Many homeowners opt to use a professional for peace of mind.

Here are a few other reasons to hire a pro for installation services:

  • A pro handles the electrical wiring safely, preventing fire hazards and ensuring you won't need a costly ceiling fan repair down the line.

  • They have the expertise to securely mount the fan to your ceiling, so you don’t have to worry about it wobbling or falling.

  • Professionals correctly assemble and balance the fan blades for quiet, efficient, and wobble-free operation.

  • They come prepared with the right tools and can troubleshoot unexpected issues, like outdated wiring or the need for a new support brace.

  • Hiring an expert saves you time and the hassle of a complex project that can be frustrating to do on your own.

You can expect it to take one to three hours for a professional to complete a ceiling fan install. This will depend on a few factors, including:

  • New installation vs. replacement: Installing a fan in a new location requires running new wiring and adding a support box, which takes more time than a simple replacement.

  • Ceiling height and accessibility: High or sloped ceilings can make the installation more complex and time-consuming.

  • Existing wiring condition: If the home’s wiring is old or inadequate, it may need to be updated to safely support the new fan.

  • Complexity of the fan: Fans with many parts, lights, or special features will take longer to assemble and install.

  • Additional features: Installing new wall controls or programming a remote adds extra steps to the process.

Remember: The timeline for your project will vary depending on many factors. Always ask your pro to provide an estimate.

There are several factors that might impact the cost of this project, including:

  • Your home’s existing wiring: If you’re replacing an old fan, the wiring is already in place. Installing a fan in a new location will cost more because a pro may need to run new wiring and install a new switch.

  • Ceiling height and type: A pro will need more time and equipment, like a taller ladder, to install a fan on a high or sloped ceiling, which can increase the labor cost.

  • The fan’s features: A simple, standard fan is usually quicker to install than a more complex model with a remote control, multiple light fixtures, or intricate parts.

  • Removal of an old fixture: Taking down an existing fan or light fixture adds a little extra time to the job.

  • Assembly requirements: Some fans come mostly assembled, while others require building from scratch. The more assembly needed, the more labor time you can expect.

Yes, electricians can install ceiling fans. Installing a ceiling fan requires understanding the routing of circuitry in a house, being able to safely handle wires, routing wires to the correct location, and being able to install the ceiling fan securely.

During your pro’s visit, you may expect them to start by turning off the power and assessing the installation site to ensure the electrical box is secure enough to support the fan. They'll then assemble the fan, mount the bracket, and connect the wiring. If your pro discovers any issues with the existing wiring, they may discuss options for repairs or upgrades before proceeding. Once the fan is fully installed, they’ll restore power and test that everything works correctly, including the fan speeds and light.

Before your pro arrives to install a ceiling fan, take these steps to ensure a safe and efficient appointment:

  1. Step 1: Clear the work area. Move any furniture or decor from under the installation spot so your pro has a clear, safe space to work with a ladder.

  2. Step 2: Have the new fan ready. Unpack the new ceiling fan and its components in the room where it will be installed to ensure all the parts are there and save time.

  3. Step 3: Know your ceiling height. Measure your ceiling height in advance, as this helps your pro confirm if the fan's included downrod is the right size for optimal airflow and safety clearance.

  4. Step 4: Secure pets and clear a path. Make sure there's a clear path from your home's entrance to the work area, and keep pets in another room for their safety.

  5. Step 5: Note any existing issues. If you're replacing an old fixture, tell your pro about any problems you noticed, like flickering lights or a wobbly base.

These questions can help you find the right installer for your ceiling fan:

  • Are you licensed and insured?

  • Can you provide a detailed, written estimate of all potential costs?

  • Will my current wiring and ceiling support box need to be upgraded for this fan?

  • How much experience do you have with this type of installation?

  • How long do you expect the project to take?

  • Do you offer a warranty on your labor?

  • What does your cleanup process involve?
