Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do you need to lay tile?

If you’re laying a new tile floor, you’ll likely need an assortment of tools and supplies, including (but not limited to):

  • Tile
  • Tile adhesive
  • Tile trim
  • Tile spacers
  • Underlayment
  • Sealer
  • Caulk
  • Level
  • Goggles
  • Gloves
  • Trowel
  • Carpenter’s square
  • Grout
  • Sponge
  • Tape measure
  • Etc.

If you don’t have all of the tools, equipment and skills necessary to lay tile in your home, consider hiring one of the best tile contractors in your area.

How long does it take to install backsplash?

The time it takes to install backsplash depends on the size of the area and the type of materials you’re using. But generally, it’ll take a few days to finish the project. Porcelain or ceramic tile may take less time than that, while very small glass tiles or complicated designs are likely to add time.

Chat with the best tile specialists to find out how long it will take to install a backsplash in your home.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a tiler during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation with a tiler during the COVID-19 pandemic, start by conducting an online search for tilers in your area. Ask if the tiler can conduct a consultation through a video call instead of a traditional site visit to limit exposure. It’s also wise to confer about the current state of the pandemic and ensure that it’s safe to complete the project now. If not, discuss postponing for another time.

Can you tile over tile floors?

Yes, you can lay tile over existing tile floors (or a backsplash). Although it’s generally best to pull up your old flooring, you can simply place tiles on top if your existing floor is in good condition.

Before you start, examine your tiles carefully for mold, cracks or unevenness. Provided none of these is an issue, you can begin laying your new tiles.

But if this is your first time laying tile — or if you want to ensure that the job is done right — save time by hiring a tiling professional near you

Can you tile over drywall?

Yes, it is possible to lay tile over drywall. If you’re looking to lay a tile backsplash in your kitchen, you can certainly do it yourself — but hiring a professional may save time.

Before you tile over your drywall, make sure the wall has a smooth surface with no bumps or cracks. Start by using a compound to seal up any crevices, then sand the drywall and clean up the dust. Then, lay a coat of primer on the drywall to get it ready for your tile.

How long does it take to lay tile?

Depending on the pro’s expertise, the size of the project and its complexity, the time it takes to lay the tile will vary. For some projects, it may take a few hours to lay tile while others will require several days of work.

When planning a tiling project for your home, get free estimates from the best tile contractors near you and ask them how long it would take them to complete your job.

Does tile flooring increase home value?

Having a tile floor may increase your home’s value, but it might depend on the type of tile you install and the trends in the real estate market.

Chat with your realtor or a real estate expert to figure out what types of home repairs and remodeling projects you should tackle before you put your home on the market. It might make sense to add new tiles when renovating your kitchen or bathroom, for example.

If you decide to include new tiling in your home remodeling project, contact the best tile installation pros near you to get free estimates.

Which is better: porcelain or ceramic tile?

Porcelain tiles are more durable and have a longer lifespan than ceramic tile. If you're installing flooring in an area with high traffic or lots of heavy furniture, porcelain tiles will look better for longer. They’re also very easy to clean and maintain. Porcelain is also very water-resistant and can hold up in places like bathrooms and rooms with jacuzzis, hot tubs, or swimming pools.

But if the cost is your top priority, ceramic tiles are often more affordable. Ceramic tile prices start as low as $0.45 or $0.50 per square foot, and porcelain tile starts at $3 per square foot.

Can you tile over a tile backsplash?

Yes, you can tile over your existing kitchen backsplash if you want a fresh, new look. This will only work if the surface is smooth and there are no cracked or uneven backsplash tiles in the wall. If you have a few problem tiles, simply remove and reinstall them before you tile over the wall.

In general, it’s better to start with a blank wall. However, you may save time by simply tiling over your existing tile backsplash. When in doubt, always consult a tiling professional.

How can I find out if a tiler is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To identify essential service providers during the pandemic, visit your city or state’s government website to find a list of recommendations.

A list of national recommendations can be found at CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 webpage. This service lists 16 different types of essential infrastructure sectors that are approved to continue operation during the pandemic. But note not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Andres helped to pick the tiles from local home improvement store. The tile installer was very patient and took his time to install the tiles correctly. Next day he came to put grouts. He clean up the grout films through. He used the wet sponge again to ensure all the hazes are gone. Looks beautiful. Very happy.

Mr. Santos did a wonderful job installing tile in my kitchen and powder room. He was professional, ON TIME, and went above and beyond to make sure I was happy with the job. Mr. Santos IS a professional flooring installer not a fly by night handyman who does tile on the side. I've already recommended him to my friends and neighbors.

Bernd did a great job laying cement tile in our bathroom. It was hard to find someone with experience with this type of tile so we were glad he responded to our request. He was very knowledgeable and communicated well throughout the process. Just an excellent overall experience. If you need a dependable tiler with lots of experience and no surprises, you should consider BW Tile Installation.

We hired Radalfo to remove our bathroom tile and install new tile. They didn't bring trash cans to dispose of the old tile so they had to use my trash can. This could be an issue if there was a bigger tile job and if you didn't have proper disposal yourself. They didn't bring paper to lay down on the floor to prevent tracking until about half way through the job. Radalfo didn't get to remove the haze that was on top of the tile so I had to do it the next day. The work itself was really good and I was happy with the price and final product.

Jordan was great and responsive. We purchased a new townhome and we opted not to have the builder install a backsplash so we hired Absolute Tile and that was the best decision!!!

I own a spec home Construction company in Charlotte NC. We were looking for a new tile installer for our homes to replace the one we'd been using for the past 6 years. Anthony (self admittedly) had less experience but was focused and organized during our first meeting. He installed tile in 3 baths and the kitchen backsplash. The work was better than I expected and quicker than I'm used to. The house ultimately sold in 3 days with comments emphasizing the tile work. We will be employing him from this point forward on all our new construction homes and renovations. Thanks again!

He showed up on time and did a great job installing tile backsplash in our kitchen. He even suggested using a 1/3 offset which looks a lot better than the pattern we were initially thinking.

I hired Dave to install a kitchen backsplash. The quality of work was great and prices were so reasonable that I also had him remodel my bathroom. He pulled out an old shower surround and tiled the walls and floors. The project was done in a timely manner and on budget. I would highly recommend him.

We couldn't be happier with the results of the tile and Backsplash installed by Family Renovation! FR gave a fair quote and clearly explained the scope of work. Even when there were a few additional expenses, FR clearly explained what was needed and saved any receipts. They helped turned our dated kitchen into a kitchen we can be proud to show. Just look at the before and after! I would definitely recommend Family Renovation to anyone looking for any service that they can provide!

Noel Santos is an extremely professional and courteous installer. I would highly recommend him to anyone needing any tile work done. He completed the job a day and a half early and he was prompt( if not early) each of the four days necessary to complete the project. He worked non-stop, not taking breaks even though I had a relaxed timeline. He went above and beyond what was expected and half the price of the big chains, ie HD or Lowe's. I would not hesitate to use his services again or to recommend him to family, friends and co-workers. Rick Bouman Charlotte,NC
