Tim showed up on time and ready to go. No standing around chit-chatting, or additional questions, as he already knew what needed to be done during the estimating phase. He brought his tools in, i showed him upstairs, and he got to work. Many of the parts to my system required familiarization, but he knew the basics of the equipment and was able to move forward with the setup. He always checked and re-checked connections, concealed cables, etc. The biggest part of my home theater project was the in-ceiling and in-wall speakers, and he didn't hesitate to go into the attic to locate the pre-wired cables, cut additional holes in the ceiling for two additional speakers I wanted installed, as well as cut an additional section for the center channel. The final step was hanging the projector screen in which he decided would be better to assemble earlier in the day, so as not to fiddle around with it toward the end. There was an extreme method to his installation process, and i'm head-over-heels with the result. There were a couple installers cheaper than Tim, but as we all know, you get what you pay for. I paid for the best, and by golly i got the best. I cannot believe how well prepared he was. All the required tools, attention to major and minor details, you name it. Even after everything was set up, he went through the settings to make sure the projector was maximized for the optimal picture, and the entire theater was fully functional and maximized for sound so my wife could scream "turn it down." I can't wait to watch the COWBOYZ Sunday night. You're an awesome dude Tim. Thanks!See more

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do I need an electrician for?

Electricians can help with a variety of electricity-related jobs around your home. If you have a new home, they can install new wiring throughout. Or if you have an old home, they can help with wiring repair.

If your lights keep flickering, circuit breakers seem to be faulty, or outlets don’t have any power, electricians can assist in sorting out the problem. Your house is full of electrical circuits, wiring and sockets that may need repair or updating. These tasks can be safely completed by electricians in your area.

How much does a licensed electrician cost per hour?

An electrician’s average hourly rate is $75, but this price can range from $45-$120, depending on the complexity of the job and the materials needed. The total cost will also vary depending on how long your job takes and if the electrician charges for travel time.

Your location may also be a factor in determining the hourly rate of performing electrical work on your home. To get an accurate estimate of how much electrical work will cost you, contact the best electricians near you to receive free quotes.

How do I hire an electrician?

Go online to find a list of the best electricians in your area. View each individual electrician’s profile and learn more about their services and expertise. Then, read reviews from satisfied customers as well as any issues they may have encountered. This will help you find one with the right experience to work safely in your home.

You should also spend some time researching what qualifications and credentials they have. You might find information about their license on their profile, or you might need to check your local and state government’s website to verify their license.

Once you’ve done a bit of research, ask to receive free estimates from several electricians in your area. Ultimately, hire the most qualified electrician who can complete your project at a reasonable price.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic, ensure that you are performing as much of the process digitally as possible. The best way to begin is by conducting an online search for local electricians. Ask if they can perform consultations over a phone or video call to comply with social distancing mandates. You should also discuss a strategy for how to complete the project during social distancing or whether the project should be completed once the pandemic has ended.

Do electricians do free estimates?

Yes, they do. Whether you’re looking for new electrical work or wiring repair, the electrician should offer you a free estimate.

Go online to find the best electricians near you. After researching and finding a few pros who seem qualified for your job, go ahead and request a quote to find out how much those electricians will charge you.

What questions should I ask an electrician?

Here are a few questions you should ask any electrician you’re considering hiring:

  • Are you licensed or certified? A professional electrician should have this information ready and up to date.
  • Do you have any references? Ask for references to learn about their work history from previous customers. You may be able to look online at reviews, but it’s also good to speak to someone to find out their experience with this electrician.
  • What types of services do you offer? Whether you need repairs or installation services, make sure the electrician can perform the work you need.
  • How long will the job take? This will help you set expectations and rearrange your schedule (if needed).
  • Can you send me free estimates? Request a job quote or estimate. This will help with comparing different electricians. The numbers may vary, but be sure to factor in the experience of each person, as well as the scope of electrical work you’re asking about.

Is it worth it to hire an electrician?

Yes, it's usually worth it to hire an electrician instead of doing the work yourself.

Electrical work can be very dangerous. The pros spend many years working and studying before they become licensed and certified. That knowledge and training can help them work safely and perform the job without harming themselves or your home.

Even a small wiring repair job can be unsafe if not done correctly. Hiring someone that has specialized training on how to do each specific job is the safest choice.

How can I find out if an electrician is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Guidelines are available from both local and federal government agencies to clarify which services qualify as essential during the COVID-19 pandemic. To determine whether an electrician is considered an essential service provider in your area, check your city or state’s government websites.

For federal guidelines, consult CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 page, which outlines 16 critical infrastructure sectors. But not that some, not all, jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Needed an electrician fast to fix the wiring in my garage. Angel was very quick to respond and came by the same day. Work was done quickly and everything is working great. Love the new outdoor lights he added. He will be the first person I contact if I need any electrical work done.

Victor was polite and very thorough. He fixed some safety issues I wasn't aware of. This was my first time hiring any electrician, so I'm not sure what the going rate is, but I spent about 800 to repair several outlets, overhead lights, and shoddy wiring. He was here about 4 hours with his equally pleasant associate. They cleaned up their mess and explained everything as I had no prior knowledge of electrical issues.
