Like many other customers I look through reviews before hiring anyone. I did the same here. I was extremely nervous about the one negative review they had here but it did not match the rest of the reviews here nor on other websites. I decided to call Gabriel because his price was very fair and also get an explanation of the bad review. While he was very apprehensive about taking about another customer I insisted that I needed more details so I could decide to hire him. He gave me the big picture and I decided to hire him. So my experience was nothing short of EXCELLENT. Gabriel showed up on time and took care of my garage door installation. To me he went above and beyond because I was missing an extension to the track for my garage door opener and he identified that immediately. At that point I would have expected him to say he will have to reschedule it until I get that part. Instead he said no problem, let me run over to Lowes and go get it for you and complete the job the same night. Anyway he did go to Lowes and grabbed the part and completed the installation for me even though it went a lot later into the evening then he was expecting. For anyone looking for an honest hard working small business owner you should not hesitate to hire Gabriel.

Roberto is an awesome hard worker and very helpful! Not only did he repair all the doors in our home but he did it on very short notice and with a huge grin on his face the entire time. He also showed my husband ways to take care of other things so he could finish other repairs. Not only do we have the best repairman to call now, we also have a wonderful new friend!

My sister and I are real estate investors and residential property renovators. We are always on the lookout for quality contractors who perform good work at a competitive price. Upon meeting Marcel and his wife we immediately knew we wanted to work with them. Their other Thumbtack reviews were impressive and their level of professionalism was what we were looking for. Marcel and his team renovated a 3/1 ranch style home for us. Improvements included: complete kitchen and bathroom overhaul, painting, carpet, new window casing and installation, new siding, and other decorative cosmetic fixes throughout the home. The work he and his team performed on this property was impeccable. He keeps you informed throughout the process with daily calls and status updates. His initial quote was itemized and true to budget. There were plenty of times we checked in and he was working into the evenings and on the weekends. Not because he had slipped on the schedule but because he knew it was in everyone’s best interested to get the job done in a timely manner. He also makes sure that the work is to your level of satisfaction before he moves on to the next task. At the end of the project we were totally satisfied. We got a quality renovation at a reasonable price. The house was listed on the market and sold on the very same day!!! Marcel and his MHI Works team is a pleasure to work with. Not only does he and his team do great work but his customer service skills are outstanding. He communicates with you throughout the process, constantly gives you updates and makes you feel confident that you will achieve whatever your projects goals are. There is no doubt we will use MHI Works again. They are listed as a preferred contractor moving forward. Al D. Swanky Footprints Properties

"I called Mr.Tyrone Evans from a request I made on Thumbtack. Mr. Evans was very respectful and polite over the phone. He came out on the time and date we made the appointment 5 minutes early in the rain. Mr. Evans installed 3 motion lights outside my house and a Wi-Fi - Programmable Honeywell Thermostat. Mr. Evans took his time with my job and treated me with respect. The work he did was great. He even changed bulbs adjust lights he didn't charge me for. I would recommend Mr. Evans for anyone with a handyman and Electrical job of any size. His prices are fair and work is awesome. I will use him for all my handyman work. The guys over at Hanson Overhead helped me out tremendously. One of the springs broke late in the evening and the owner came over to help me get the car out of the garage at no cost. They sent a very knowledgeable and professional technician over the next morning to replace my broken spring. Great prices, the tech was on time, and they cleaned up when they left. I highly recommend using Hanson Overhead of Raleigh for garage door problems.

Bill replied to our initial request to build a small portico roof over our front door. We had some ideas in mind, but appreciated Bill's honesty that some of our plans may not be best for our house. He worked with us to come up with a better plan, and we could not be happier with it. Since we were impressed with him, we asked him to do other repairs from our inspection report. Bill was hard working, honest and did a thorough job. We will definitely contact him again if needs arise!

My car was stuck in the garage because of a broken door spring and I had an important appointment. The staff on the phone was very kind and after a short time a technician arrived in my compound. He replaced the broken spring and now, I have a super functioning door!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you fix a broken garage door?

Garage door problems don’t have to mean the end of the world. Garage door repair is typically a one-day process and can be done for only a few hundred dollars. Common garage door repair requests include fixing slow or erratic garage doors, addressing strange sounds coming from the garage door or motor, fixing cosmetic damage such as dents or scrapes, repairing broken doors that are stuck open or closed, and troubleshooting inoperable doors.

The two main garage door operating mechanisms are sectional roll-ups or tilt-ups. Garage door repair services can fix single-car, double-car or RV-height doors. Your garage door may be made of wood, steel, aluminum, masonite, vinyl, fiberglass or another material. The type of garage door repair you need really depends on the type of garage door you have and the issue at hand. Garage door repair pros often charge a flat service call fee to diagnose the problem and provide an estimate. For customers who choose to have the repair done, the service call fee may be applied to the first hour of labor (including time to make the diagnosis). If your garage door is under warranty, the repair may be free of charge.

How much does it cost to install a new garage door opener?

Your new garage door opener cost will vary based on the model you purchase and how long installation takes. Typically, installation pros charge by the hour, although if the pro is also selling the garage door opener they may have a flat fee for the product with installation. The national average for new garage door opener costs (with installation) is between $390 and $650, although the national average cost for the opener purchased alone may be in the $150-$300 range. The three most common types of openers are chain-drive, screw-drive and belt-drive. The chain-drive costs the least but makes the most noise. The belt-drive is typically the quietest and the most expensive. You can expect to pay about the same amount for installation for any of the three styles. The lifespan of a garage door opener is approximately 10 years, depending on quality. A pro may provide opener repairs for the cost of their service call fee or they may charge a flat fee, such as $100 for opener repair. Here are some examples of new garage door opener average costs, including installation:

    • Contractor-grade garage door opener with installation: $300.
    • Chain-drive opener with installation and one remote: $350.
    • Belt-drive opener with installation and two remotes: $400
    • Top-of-the-line opener with ¾-horsepower battery backup, belt drive and nearly soundless operation: $475
      • The majority of higher-end garage door openers are “smart” products and will connect via app to your smartphone for remote access.

How much does it cost to get a new garage door?

A new garage door can add serious curb appeal, not to mention myriad home safety benefits. The cost of a new garage door will vary based on the type of garage door you want and the materials it will be made of. You can purchase a new garage door and have the pros install it for you, but proceed with caution as many installers won’t guarantee their labor if you didn’t purchase the garage door through their company. A new door (without installation) may cost anywhere from $200 to $4,000 or more, depending on size, brand and materials. Here are some examples of average new garage door costs, including installation:

    • Raised-panel, insulated,16x7 garage door: $1,100
      • Without insulation: about $900
    • Raised-panel, insulated, 8x7: $700
      • Without insulation: $550
    • Carriage-house 16x7 garage door with stamped-steel design: $1,500
    • Carriage-house 8x7 garage door with stamped-steel design: $1,000
      • A carriage-house garage door is a barn-style door with handles and hinges; it looks like it pulls out in the style of a barn door but is actually a roll-up.
    • Carriage-house 16x7 garage door with steel and faux-wood overlay: $3,500
    • Carriage-house 8x7 garage door with steel and faux-wood overlay: $2,000–$2,200
    • Solid-wood cedar or mahogany 16x7 garage door with window in top panels: $5,000
    • Solid-wood cedar or mahogany 8x7 garage door with window in top panels: $3,500

How much should it cost to replace a garage door cable?

If your garage door is not opening or has become jammed, you may need to replace the garage door cables. Unless you have the proper tools and know-how, this is a job best left to a professional due to the weight of the garage door and the extreme tension of the springs. The cost of repair will vary depending on your location, the length of the cables you need, and the time it takes the pro to do the replacement.

From a big-box store, basic garage door cables can run between $8 and $20, depending on the product. Your pro may charge you a different cost if they provide the cables. Your cables may not need to be replaced if they have simply come off the track, but broken cables will need to be completely removed and replaced. In either instance, the pros will need to secure or take down the door; unwind the springs; reset or replace the rollers, cables, and drums; and then wind the springs once more. For example, a pro could reset cables that have come off the track for $129.99. The average national cost for a garage door repair specialist is $80 - $110 per hour and the typical cost to replace a broken garage door cable is anywhere from $130 to $200.

How much is it to replace a garage door panel?

Replacing a garage door panel can add significantly to the cost of a garage door repair. Panels run horizontally on sectional roll-up garage doors. They may be made of wood, vinyl, aluminum, fiberglass or steel. Garage door panels can become damaged from hail and other extreme weather, dents and dings, car accidents, and age. When deciding if you want to replace a garage door panel, it’s helpful to compare the potential repair cost to the cost of a new garage door. Panel replacement requires a pro with the proper tools as well as the new parts. With parts and labor you could be paying more than $500 for one new panel. In comparison, a new garage door may cost $800-$1,200 (on average) with installation. If there is a possibility your garage door was structurally compromised when the panel was damaged, have the pro assess whether it’s better to completely remove and replace the door, rails and framework to ensure your home’s safety. It may also be better to completely replace your door if it is severely rusted or dented; if the paint is peeling and fading; if the door model is outdated or you can’t find replacement panels; or if the panels or rails are structurally compromised.
