Joyful Movers made it easy for me to move out of my old home and into my new home. The movers were polite and took good care of my things. The only improvement that I would note is that they used a brown tape to secure items such as the remote control to the tvs and for keeping the hoses together on the washer/dryer........and the tape left a brown residue on the items. I would suggest using a clear tape to secure items. Otherwise, it was a very pleasant experience and no incidents of scrapes/scratches on furniture or walls.

For reference, I had a 1 bed/1 bath apartment moving to a 2 bed/2 bath apartment. Walter arrived on time, was extremely pleasant, and immediately got started. My quote was for 2 hours and they finished in 2 hours 15 minutes and prorated the hourly rate for the 15 minutes. All of my furniture arrived in the same condition as it left and was placed where I asked without hesitation or complaint. I will definitely use your company in future.

Even though Juan confirmed our moving they could not make it until 5hours later the day of moving. Obviously they are tired and could only complete half the job. Had to come back next day later than agreed by 4 to 5 hrs again and completed the job. I appreciate the fact that Juan was able to get the job done but I lost a full day Sunday, I could have been unpacking and could not. They could not bring my bed up the stairs but I was able to get it moved by another mover later in about 20 minutes. This happened because Juan team were tired and could not try to move the bed up in a different angle. I would hire him again if needed but I may put a condition in contract for date of moving:) Juan was very careful with our furniture, he did not take it easy with any of our items and was paying attention all the time. But the other movers were tired and would NOT pay attention. When I mentioned that the other movers are NOT paying attention and damaging or scratching walls, Juan immediately talked to them. He is a good person and experienced.

We just bought a new couch and a chair today, not sure if we would be able to move it up our apartment steps, we reached out to Briscoe's. They were here at the drop of a dime and right when we asked them to be here. The guys did a great job moving the furniture up the steps and into our place. If anyone made strong muscles, quick these are the guys to call!

Incredible! We hired Boykin Boys to load a 16' truck with the contents of my elderly parents' apartment. Delmar called me 30 mins ahead of time to confirm his arrival. He and his associate arrived on time and completed the job quickly, professionally, and enthusiastically. I highly recommend working with this team. Thank you guys so much!

The truck arrived about an hour late due to traffic and without some of the materials we were promised (shrink wrap). The bellhops moved the boxes to the curb while waiting for the truck, but had nothing to do for the last half hour or so we were waiting for the truck. Customer service did resolve the issue by sending out two of them to buy shrink wrap, which still wasn't quite enough to wrap all of our furniture. They also adjusted one hour of the truck's rate for the time the truck wasn't there, but not the rate for the movers' idle time. The movers were young guys with not a lot of moving experience, but they had a good attitude and listened to what we wanted in terms of furniture wrapping. They didn't seem to be super careful with items marked "fragile," though, nor did they keep garment boxes upright. We haven't opened the boxes yet, so I'm not sure if clothing came unhung or any items broke. As I mentioned above, the customer service agents were responsive when we had issues. However, there were several issues with this move, including with the website. It certainly wasn't the seamless move they advertise. Overall, Bellhops offers a good value for straightforward moves. If you need more full-service moves that include furniture wrapping or packing, or need experienced movers, you may want to look elsewhere.

Nick responded promptly to my request for quotes to haul stuff from my apartment. He showed up on time and finished in less than an hour. He even hauled stuff I was taking to donate. I'd hire Nick again.

Evelin and Ashley work great as a team! I hired Glance of Heaven for a one-time cleaning of my apartment when I was moving out. Despite having to work around many boxes and some furniture pushed into the middle of room, they did a terrific job on the baseboards and crown moulding in every room. The bathroom fixtures and appliances in the kitchen were gleaming and the floors looked wonderful. They really did a bang up job in the kitchen, wiping the cabinets inside and out, cleaning the fridge and freezer, scrubbing the counter tops. I would heartily recommend their services!

Pat and Justin did a great job moving all of my furniture out of my 3rd floor apartment and into a moving truck. I didn't think they would be able to fit everything in there but they did! There were no scratches on my furniture at all! Pat was great at responding to phone calls and text messages, especially if problems arose.

Haji was really friendly and helpful in the whole process. We had a quite a lot of stuffs and furniture for 2BR apartment but they moved out all pretty quick. We had some hiccups but they managed it really well and also followed up promptly to take care of it the next day to make sure we are okay and satisfied with the move. If I ever have to reach out to a mover in future, I would definitely check Haji for sure.

Can’t say enough good things about these guys. I called them after I had movers no show and they managed to turn around a crew to get me moved that day. They literally got done at midnight and were friendly, polite, and hardworking the whole time. I’ll hire them the first time next time I need to move.

Pick Up Movers are the real deal. When moving from an apartment in NC to one in VA I was trying to find a cost effective but also still quality option. Comparing them to their competitors, Pick Up Movers was able to help me move everything from one place to the next. Their staff is easy to work with and try their best to make their customers happy. They really helped make a stressful experience so much easier for us, plus they were affordable. I'm fully satisfied after hiring them, and plan to do so if needed in the future.

Where do I even begin. Lewis (Owner), Michael, Timmy and Tim were absolutely phenomenal. My story is a bit different in that the job was unable to be completed (through no fault of the company) . I hired B&L for junk removal for an apartment move out. From the time I was given a very reasonable quote...to the polite gentleman contacting me well in advance to verify the details of the job...to Michael being considerate enough to think of additional costs to me and assisting in researching alternatives then working closely with Lewis to troubleshoot options to challenges brought about by my apartment trash disposal restrictions. Again, they were awesome and very patient after having completing a job that was over an hour away. I was treated as though my job was their priority the whole time. I already have a few upcoming installation projects (in my new place) that I plan to use them for. EXTREMELY PLEASED WITH B&L AND WOULD DEFINITELY USE AGAIN AS WELL AS REFER.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.

How much does it cost to move across the country?

The national average cost for hiring cross-country movers is $1,490-$2,220. A number of factors can affect the cost. One factor is the distance you want to move. For example, an East Coast-based moving company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. Another factor is how many belongings you have. Most cross-country movers charge by the cubic foot.

The type of move you want is another consideration in cost. You can have your belongings moved exclusively and delivered on a set day, or you can opt for a consolidated move, which is less expensive. In a consolidated move your belongings are stored and transported with the goods of other customers who are moving to your general vicinity during the same general time frame as you. Your belongings should arrive within a one- to two-week window, rather than on a set day. If you want the cross-country movers to pack your belongings for you, the cost will also increase.
