Had a very pleasant experience working with Tamara, she helped me achieve the cover for my novel that I envisioned and it turned out amazing. She listens well and applies, it was her first book cover but she nailed it. Thanks so much!

I hired Magic Graphics to create a social media campaign to launch my latest book - Time Really Is Money. Mark created the coolest site on the web and designed the best book cover I've seen. High reward working with Magic and Mark with little or no risk.

Mr. Smith did an outstanding job creating our commercial. He demonstrated the time management skills that I look for when dealing with any company. Most importantly, I was able to develop trust very quickly. He followed through with every promise that he made. He went beyond the level of service promised and brought in a friend who was a photographer to make digital photos of our course. The ones on file were old and not the high resolution.

Our choice to hire Infinite Photography for our seasonal family photos was, without a doubt, one of our best decisions! Paul Culver's skill in capturing children's smiles and personality was the strongest selling factor as we have 2 boys- aged 3 and 6 who have fleeting, often misdirected smiles!!! Paul exceeded our expectations with his thoughtful communication and professional expertise throughout our experience! He was upfront with all anticipated costs and considerations prior booking, and offered flexibility in packages and value in his pricing. He put all 4 of us at ease as he worked efficiently to deliver our desired nature shots. We have gotten so many compliments on our pictures!!! Our greatest challenge was deciding our absolute favorite image since Paul captured our faces and natural lighting with outdoor scenery so beautifully. It couldn't have been easier to view our proofs online, and we are eternally grateful that Infinite Photography allowed us to purchase all images for convenient use from a CD. We will certainly be using Paul for years to come, and have no reservation in recommending Paul's flawless service!

I asked Mr. Caison to design a logo, business card layout and brochure layout for my tutoring business. The results are wonderful! He designed a shield for the logo. The shield includes symbols for learning and knowleged (i.e. tree, book, pen, spiral). I wanted to incorporate my Scottish heritage on the brochure and cards so I gave him a swatch of my family's tartan and asked him to used his artistic "eye" and stylize it. What he designed is beautiful. I have had so many compliments on the brochure and cards. Mr. Caison not only brings a lot of talent to his work but is also a great collaborator. He listens to his client's ideas and communicates clearly with suggestions as to how to make a vision become a reality.

I still haven't published my book (darn economics!), but I was very pleased with Glenn's efforts on editing a romance-adventure (42k words) I felt was worth paying someone to get really right before submitting. He gave solid reasons for anything he felt could be left out, and when he suggested moving parts around, it made obvious sense. I hadn't introduced the bad guy until chapter 11 or 12 (other stuff seemed more important), he moved to Ch. 6 because "even if you don't use him all the time or until much later, people need to know he exists, why, and what impact might/will have (vs. just popping in near end).

Actually, I do need more than editing. I am struggling (rambling). I have made an outline, but what I have submitted to my mentor have not been so great. Do you have any suggestions and what type of support you could provide?

Kathryn has edited my work for the better part of a decade. She has edited my books, articles and marketing materials. I not only trust her technical skills, but I trust her intuition and empathy. She understands my voice. Her editing keeps my vernacular and tone in line. Kathryn has bailed me out of many a writing crisis! I would not hesitate for a moment to recommend her as an editor. She is wonderful to work with!

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you hire a good grant writer?

Grants are available to nonprofit organizations, for-profit businesses that qualify for government grants, and individuals who qualify for foundation or government grants. Hiring a good grant writer can help you gain funding in your chosen field. According to the American Grant Writers’ Association, grant writers can help you research potential grant opportunities; write grant proposals, create budgets, and build budget narratives; review written materials before you submit; prepare a business plan; analyze your organization for grant competitive qualities; prepare research grants; help with 501(c)(3) applications for nonprofits; and more. Investing in the right grant writer could result in a financial win for your organization. Generally no licenses or certificates are required to be a good grant writer, but you may want to find a grant writer who has been certified (not just received a certificate of completion) by a reputable organization such as the Grant Professionals Certification Institute. Qualities to look for in a good grant writer include:

        • Proven success writing winning grants, especially in your target area.
        • Strong writing skills.
        • Strong math skills and demonstrated proficiency with budgeting.
        • Careful attention to detail — brilliant grant proposals may be rejected just for formatting errors, so you want someone who follows instructions explicitly.
        • Expertise in your target area.
        • Punctuality and good communication skills.

How much does a grant writer cost?

Hiring a grant writer can give you a competitive edge when applying for financial grants for your business or nonprofit organization, or as an individual. The cost to hire a grant writer can vary depending on their academic background, areas of expertise, previous grant writing success and years of experience. According to the Grant Professionals Association, grant writers should be paid hourly or by flat fee. It is unethical for a grant writer to accept a commission or percentage compensation of grant monies received. They can, however, be awarded bonuses in line with the hiring company’s prevailing practices. Here are some examples of average grant writing fees:

        • Hourly rate for grant writers with less experience or fewer grants awarded: $25-$35 per hour.
        • Hourly rate for grant writers with some degree of success: $35-$75 per hour.
        • Hourly rate for grant writers with proven success winning large grants: $75-$150 or more per hour.
        • For a smaller grant, the writer may charge a flat fee of $200-$500 for preparation and submission.

Pricing may also vary based on the complexity of the grant application. A federal grant that requires pages of research, budgets and a business plan may take more than 30 hours to prepare. For a high-level grant writer who charges $100 per hour, this means $3,000 or more in grant writing fees.

Most grant writers will provide you with a total cost estimate before agreeing to the work. You may be required to pay a deposit up front, or the grant writer may work from a retainer. Often, seasoned grant writers pay for themselves in the long run by writing successful grants.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
