About McKenzie Drums

As a long-time percussionist, I've expanded my love of drums to building custom drums and drum sets. I have also taught beginner to intermediate drum lessons to local drummers. If you're looking for a custom drum, or someone to help you get started in drumming, I'm sure I can help you out.

I have 20 years experience playing percussion instruments. I also have a piano background for theory and mallet instruments, as well as 5 years of building experience, including my own line of metal and carbon fiber drum shells, and 2 years of teaching experience in one-on-one settings.

Question and answer

Q. What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

A. Choose someone with several years of experience and someone that has a broad range of experience. Even if you or your child is interested in one particular kind of drumming it helps to be introduced to various styles and influences. When it comes to drum building, picking out someone that will work with you to get your custom creation made and that has some time spent building is a must.

Q. If you were a customer, what do you wish you knew about your trade? Any inside secrets to share?

A. When it comes to building drums the secrets are often in the finish. Machining the edges, snare beds, etc aren't overly difficult but putting a high gloss finish on a drum can take hours or even days to do.

Q. What questions should a consumer ask to hire the right service professional?

A. Always ask about what their music background is, whether they can read music, etc. Before you can give lessons you have to have sat through lessons of your own so you can know what it's like to be sitting in the chair learning.
