Zacki prepared a wonderful ancient Mediterranean meal for our intimate private wedding party. Zacki is very knowledgeable about ancient foods which brought unique flavors to the dishes she lovingly prepares. Every guest at the party enjoyed the appetizers, salad, two great entrees and a healthy and tasty fresh fruit pastry for dessert. The food was fresh and delicious and Zacki and her assistant Kathryn were a joy.

Lamar worked with my husband to create an unforgettable experience for our 5 year wedding anniversary. 5 years is the "wood" anniversary, so Chef Lamar setup a candlelit dinner in the woods at a nearby park. He had rose petals leading down the trail to the table. He plated each of our 5 course meals on wooden dishes, to keep with the theme. The food was PHENOMENAL! I can't say enough great things about Chef Lamar and his assistant Stephanie. Well done!

Hired 24 Blackbirds Cafe and Market for our wedding day and they were simply amazing!!! The owner handles everything for you and makes it completely worry free on your special day. Everything was provided such as: plates, silverware, glassware, set up and break down. The most special moment for us is when they even offered to cut and serve our wedding cake to the guest. This is not apart of their services (I don't believe) but the fact that they offered was amazing. The food was amazing as well. From the food tasting in the beginning (she creates a cute little date set up) to the arrival of hot food at our reception. They served nice portion sizes to the guest (in the buffet line) and I have yet to hear of anyone who did not like the food (Chicken Marsala, Herb roasted veggies and Herb roasted potatoes, salad, and dinner rolls). I can't thank the staff enough for a great experience. It is already nerve wrecking the day of the wedding, worrying about the food was not one of our concerns and that was great. If I ever have another event that I need caterer 24 Blackbirds Cafe and Market will be getting our business!!!

Carlos and Miguel were a pleasure to work with and made the whole process stress-free. We looked at multiple caterers before our wedding, and they offered not only the best price but the best service, as well. We were so grateful for how smoothly things went and how delicious the food was- everyone commented on it! I highly recommend Chinelos for anyone looking for a caterer for a wedding or any other event.

Teresa has organized and planned the menu and rental needs for a 32 person wedding reception. She did an incredible job of listening to our vision and coming up with beautiful and creative ideas on how to execute that vision. She has great connections and knowledge of rental needs, which took a HUGE stress off my plate. She has been patient, gracious and generous with her time. She has incredible energy and knowledge and has made a potentially stressful event an enjoyable and fun experience. HIGHLY recommended!!!! She's amazing!

I found Chrisabethella Catering through Thumbtack. Never having heard of the company before, I wasn't 100% sure, but after speaking with Courtney and seeing the level of professionalism and knowledge she exhibited, I chose Chrisabethella Catering to cater my wedding. Catering involved into "Catering *and* Event Rentals," once Courtney explained her capabilities to also handle our event rentals. She was extremely flexible in the items I needed (our primary color was a very tricky shade of dark purple-blue), and was always patient with me as we went through the process of coordinating the right items. We had many late-in-the-game changes to our wedding, and through it all, Courtney was patient, responsive, and took the time to consult with me and make sure all of my questions were answered -- no matter how small or trivial they seemed. The fact that Courtney acted as a trusted advisor in my wedding planning process was amazing -- she went above and beyond to meet strict budgetary requirements, yet provided her professional opinion on if cutting X or Y would result in a lower quality service, or hinder the guest experience. As someone who did most of the planning on my own and who isn't too wedding-savvy, this type of assistance was invaluable. Did I mention that all of our guests loved the food, Courtney's team did a great job delivering everything on-time, and she even followed up with me that day to make sure we had everything we needed? I am so glad to have had such a wonderful caterer/rentals vendor who cared as much about staying within budget and providing guests with a quality experience as I did! From catering, to event rentals, to the cake, and consultation -- Chrisabethella Catering definitely hit the mark!

Maggie was an incredible caterer to work with! I'm so glad she reached out to me. My husband and I are vegan, so it was important to us to find a caterer that could create tasty, plant-based food for our wedding. Maggie was able to craft a menu with dishes from around the world and we received a ton of compliments during dinner from our guests on the food. From grandparents, to fellow vegans, the food was a hit! She and her team exceeded my expectations and helped make our wedding a night to remember :) Thank you Chef Maggie!

Chris and Joe catered our daughter's wedding and it was delicious! We received so many compliments on the food. One guest even said it was the best wedding food he had ever had! Great job and easy to work with! We had a cake issue and they were even thoughtful enough to handle that while we were at the wedding. Very accommodating!

A few years ago Damon catered our wedding in Chapel Hill. We had an initial planning meeting plus several phone calls. He was always available or very prompt in returning my calls, which was very important, since we had only 3 months to plan. He was very professional and gave us exactly what we wanted! His fees were very reasonable and the food was delicious with a beautiful presentation. I have recommended Damon to my friends for other events and will use him again for an event that needs to be catered!

Elegant Events is a life saver! The caterer of my wedding canceled at the last minute. A friend told me about Chef Lynn Suitt. I contacted her and she did not hesitate. We started right away. The service and the food were excellent!

Charlene asked that I place a review on her Thumbtack – where do I begin. I have worked with Char’s Catering for several of my events. My first encounter was a wedding in 2012. I was allowed to join the bride and groom for their taste testing and the food was outstanding. Nothing was too salty or over/under cooked. We had baked tilapia – delicious. Our next encounter was for a retirement celebration in Reidsville in 2013. Yes she travels. Again the food was absolutely delicious and her staff was awesome as well. I remember the salad being the bomb! I love salads and it just stood out. I’m not sure if it was the dressing or the freshness of the salad itself. Then she catered for a fund raising event in October 2015 for me. The food was incredible, even a guest caterer asked who she was. Her staff were efficient and very helpful. Our most recent taste testing was in April 2016 for an upcoming event in October. Boy, the food was once again outstanding and prepared differently. She also offered desserts. Our client had a field day with the desserts. She has a glowing personality and is very personable and professional. She is organized and timely which is a must in this industry. She is neat, clean and works hard to please her clients. I’ve seen her in action and been a client of hers. When selecting a caterer, I think about what event I’m doing and if that caterer can meet the theme of the event and prepare & present good tasting food for the guests. Char’s catering can do this, she meets the clients requests. She is my go to caterer. She comes highly recommended.

My wedding was truly a magical weekend at Mountain Farm Lavender Farm in Celo, NC. Elizabeth catered my Friday evening casual outdoor rehearsal dinner in a true farm to table fashion. She offered delicious creations from her locally grown organic produce and we loved it! We even got to pick our own flowers from her gardens. She has a true gift for taking the finest quality local ingredients and creating a divine feast to please a wide variety of palates. We highly recommend Elizabeth!

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

      • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
      • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
      • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
      • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
      • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
      • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.

How much should catering cost for a wedding?

The cost of wedding catering will reflect the level of service, the menu you choose, the luxury you desire and the number of guests you invite. Where you live also plays a major role in your wedding catering costs. The regional cost to do business and local cost of food will affect your catering bill. There is no set price for wedding catering, because each wedding and each menu is different. This is why many caterers provide a per-person price. This allows you to break down what it costs to feed each person based on the menu you want. Working with your caterer, you can adjust menu items, service level and more to accommodate your budget and guest count. Keep in mind that wedding catering costs are not just for the food. The bill reflects all the components that go into commercial food catering: a commercial kitchen, ingredients, staff, insurance, marketing and more. Here are some examples of average costs:

      • Three-course plated meal, moderately upscale, for 125 in Los Angeles: $14,000. Because of staffing costs, a true plated meal costs about twice as much as a staff-assisted buffet.
      • Buffet meal, standard menu, for 100 in Los Angeles: $5,000.
      • Per-person cost for hors d'oeuvres, dinner and nonalcoholic beverages: $24–$37, depending on menu selection, in Southern California.
      • Drop off prepared food for 50: $1,000 in North Carolina. Price does not include any service, setup or breakdown.

How do you serve food at a wedding?

Food service at your wedding will affect your catering costs and influence the atmosphere of the reception. Buffet style is more informal; plated meals are a bit fancier; family style encourages sharing. Read about the different food service styles to select your preferred wedding catering choice.

      • Buffet: Caterers can drop off prepared foods for a DIY and budget-friendly buffet option where you set everything up and food is entirely self-service. For a fuller-service buffet, the caterers set up food, oversee the buffet throughout the event, and clean up afterwards. For food only, prices per person might average $16-$18, while a service buffet may start around $20-$22 per person. Adding food stations can increase per-person costs by at least $3-$5.
      • Family style: Servers bring large platters of food to guest tables in courses. It’s less formal (and less expensive) than a plated meal, but more formal and higher-cost than a buffet. You’ll need large tables to accommodate the platters, so plan accordingly when renting furniture for the event.
      • Plated: A plated event is a formal dining experience; waitstaff serve your seated guests for each course, fill their drinks, and attend to them throughout the dinner. A plated dinner is typically the most expensive option for both food and service.
      • Food trucks: Similar to buffets, with food trucks your guests get their own food and bring it to their table. A food truck gives a relaxed and playful vibe to your reception.
      • Cocktail reception: If you don’t want a formal seated dinner, you can opt for a wide assortment of passed appetizers at an extended cocktail hour reception.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
