Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to fix a fence?

The average cost of fence repairs is around $250, with most homeowners paying anywhere between $200 and $300. Fence repairs have a wide range of potential costs, however, ranging from $50 to as much as $1,443. The cost of your fence repair project depends on multiple factors, including where you live, what type of repair you need, the terrain and the fence materials used.

Contact several fence repair professionals near you to get an accurate cost estimate for your fence.

Why does my gate sag?

A gate can sag for a number of reasons. One common reason is that the screws holding the hinges in the wood or other post material have come loose, causing gravity to pull the fence down. Another common problem is the gate post’s lack of stability. Posts can become loose and start to lean, or if they are wooden, they can even rot at the point where they meet the ground.

Should I repair or replace my fence?

Fence repair is better for common problems that only affect small areas, such as a broken picket or a shifting fence post. However, there is a rule of thumb to follow: If the repair project requires replacing 20% or more of your fence, it’s probably time to replace the whole fence. The exception to this rule is if the fence is fairly new and just part of it is damaged.

What are some common fence repairs?

The most common fence repairs are aimed at fixing:

  • Missing boards or slats. This is a common problem with wood fences.
  • Fence material corrosion. This occurs on metal fences like chain link and iron.
  • A sagging gate. This could result from a tilting fence post or loose hinges.
  • Post movement. Typically, this is caused by frost, corrosion or water.
  • Stains. Moisture and other elements can stain fencing, which may require a professional to remove it.
  • Warping. Warped, curled, cupped or bent boards are unsightly and less effective and need to be replaced.

If you notice any of the above issues with your fence, reach out to fence repair professionals near you to start getting cost estimates and schedule an appointment.

Who installs fences?

Fencing contractors are the best choice when you want to have a fence installed on your property. While there are several types of professionals who can likely handle this service — including handymen, landscapers and general contractors — a fencing contractor has the experience to know what could cause potential problems in the long run. This might include wet spots, vegetation or other issues with the land.

When choosing a professional to install a fence on your property, make sure they have credentials and experience.

How much does it cost to fix a gate?

Gates can be more expensive to fix than other parts of a fence, and there are several reasons for this. The first is that gates are the only moving parts on a fence — hence they have more components that can wear out, as well as friction and the potential for rusting and sagging. Fixing a gate may require a total replacement or simply replacing certain components like hinges. Sometimes, the repair may involve fixing the surrounding fence.

Contact several gate repair professionals near you to get an accurate cost estimate for your gate.

What are some common gate repairs?

The most common gate repairs tend to be associated with a sagging gate. A gate repair professional will check the hinge system. If the hinges have come loose, they will detach the gate, set the hinges in the proper location and reattach everything.

Another common repair is replacing or repairing a sagging fence post by digging a new posthole and/or using a concrete footing.

What's the cheapest fence to install?

The cheapest type of fence to install is (usually) a chain-link fence. Averaging between $7 and $12 per linear foot, this type of fencing is strong and secure and allows homeowners to maintain visibility while adding protection to their property. Chain-link fences are constructed from steel coated in aluminum, vinyl or zinc for weather resistance.

You can get a more accurate cost estimate for your chain-link fence by contacting professionals who specialize in installing these fences.

How much does it cost to put up a chain-link fence?

Chain-link fence is one of the most affordable options for adding safety and value to your home or business. The national average chain-link fence installation cost is $2,750. Chain-link fences are relatively simple for the pros to install; a fence of less than 150 linear feet can often be put up in under one day. A good rule of thumb is to add an additional workday for each additional 100 linear feet of fence to be installed.

Chain-link fence installation costs are affected by the fluctuating cost of steel, regional labor rates, the height of fence you select, and the features you select, such as a powder-coated finish. The industry standard is galvanized steel, which is rust- and corrosion-resistant. Galvanized chain-link fence installation cost, including labor and materials, is typically $12 per linear foot. For a more contemporary and elegant option, black powder-coated galvanized chain-link fence might cost approximately $15 per linear foot on average, including materials and labor. For industrial sites or businesses, 10-foot-high galvanized chain-link fences may provide additional security, but also have an added cost. A 10-foot-high chain-link fence could cost $17-$18 per linear foot, including labor and materials.

We just got a very large fence done by Mark and his crew. Man can I say that I LOVE our new fence! They took their time in doing it the correct the way. The price was spectacular, got a few quotes and his was the best. I now can say that I have the best fence in my neighborhood. It took about a week for the fence to get put up, but it was well worth the week. I will be hiring Mark for more home projects.

Bryan did a great job on the fence installation for my property in Haymount. When completed, he also stained the wood which has held up nicely despite the humidity in North Carolina. The team was willing to do a couple additional unexpected services to complete the project without charging extra.

Jim came out for an estimate the same day as the request and assured me his guys would have everything done. His guys did great! They were able to set up a gate from my fence and repair a broken gate as well. The work looks great and they had it done so fast!

Posts cut too short and crooked and then they added a cut piece upside down to make it higher. Jim said because he gave me a good price he wasn't interested in finishing my privacy fence. Doesn't care about the customer and only cares about the money. I was lied to about the permit for the fence, twice. The crew even lied to the Fayetteville Inspector about the permit. U finally had to call the finance company to file a complaint and they forced him to apply for the permit. I have only see a written out application but I haven't received a copy of the permit. Very unprofessional and a crew that cannot measure. I'm very upset and disappointed that a company will take your money but won't deliver the promises of satisfaction guaranteed.

Mr. John was amazing when it came to building the fence around our home in Fayetteville, NC after we left for another duty station. He was very patient and made sure every piece of the project was thorough from start to finish. He even did such a great job that our neighbors hired him and I’ve had another neighbor text us asking for his info. You will not regret hiring Mr. John!

Crappy job, my fence door is dangling. Old, and not new looking like the rest of the wood, posts were installed. Also one different length wood was installed, that left small gap underneath. And main door is already falling apart due to very short rod that was put in place instead of a super long one which was the proper one there. Over all, job was done but lots of minor details needed correction for me to be completely satisfied and to this day, my main gate has to be fixed by me in the end and spend more money at LOWES.

This is probably the most difficult review I have had to write based on the fact that I really liked the owner, Jim. My initial meeting with him August 19, 2019: He contacted me prior to arrival and was very professional during our discussion on replacing my damaged fence. I did specify that I wanted the job done within 7 days since heavy rain was due to come in after. Jim assured me it would be no problem. So I signed the proposal. Unfortunately, the job was not done in that timeframe and on the 9th day, a worker by the name of 'Ronnie' was tasked to do the job. Ronnie came and then left. I received a phone call saying Lowe's did NOT have what was needed, so he put an order in. Fast forward: the materials never got ordered and Jim had to personally put the order in again. Sept. 12th is when my posts went in, and after Ronnie left, my husband contacted Jim. Sept. 13th: Jim arrived along with Ronnie and agreed that the fence position was not done to his standards. It had to be redone. This is where I had to give a two star rating instead of a one star. Jim has standards. The man also is incredible with communication. Unfortunately, I hired his company to do a job, so my entire review has to take the timeline into consideration along with his employee's initial work. Would I hire him again? No. However, it is not because of the owner. Each job, no matter how small, is important to a business. I feel my situation was handled very clumsily, and it is hard to determine where and who made the mistakes.

Chuck's work is okay. Installed 200 ft privacy fence. Paid him deposit, told him we needed right away. Lowes delivered at 9 AM and he decided to start another job and begin ours on a Friday. Did not finish, and we were told he did not work weekends. Cheap gate latches now have caused our gate to be misaligned. Informed him of issue, stated he would be here Tuesday to add another latch, but nothing upon returning home on Tuesday. He did not reply to messages sent, but sure was here quick on completion day to retrieve his remaining monies. I would not recommend his services to anyone. Should have paid the additional $100 for a professional.

Joe is a true professional who provides outstanding work for affordable pricing. The NC hurricane left our home in bad shape. We hired Joe for a basic fence repair and ended up using him to completely remodel our basement and repaint the entire house. He provided several options for repairs at several different price points, allowing us to choose the best option. He even provided links to all the supplies/materials for our review. Once the big jobs were complete, we have since used Joe's services for odds and ends repair jobs and will continue to do so in the future. We even recommended him to our property manager! If you are looking for an honest, hard working, skilled contractor for you home than Joe is the guy for you!
