Joyful Movers was great! I contacted them about 2 weeks before the move and they came out, did a walk through and gave an estimate. On the day of the move 2 movers came with a 26 ft. truck and they worked hard! They were very personable and careful with every piece of my furniture. All of our furniture is REAL wood and heavy. They worked hard emptying out a ranch style house and then unloading and carrying all the furniture upstairs. I highly recommend Joyful Movers!

Ika Gibbs and his TEAM did an outstanding job caring for our furniture during the entire process of moving. They were on time, well prepared and worked as a team the entire time. That's what sets Ika apart from ALL of the other movers we have had for our previous 20 moves! His workers were of his choosing and they knew him well and what he expected from them. Excellent move. Thank you. Could not have asked for anything more.

I can not say enough wonderful things about these movers! They were on time, extremely efficient, and very friendly. All of our items were handled with care and wrapped with their saran wrap. They stuck to the time and price quoted and fit everything in our truck perfectly. In addition to this, they were very kind and patient with my three year old who wanted to "help". I'd highly recommend them for any of your moving needs!

We requested quotes for a mover about a day before our shipping container arrived. We Move Families was responsive, hard working, and respectful and they got us unloaded in a third of the time of the movers we hired to load our container. Very impressed.

I am not easy to impress because I am a perfectionist. But the movers from Pick Up Movers did the impossible. They impressed me like anything. I tried a lot but I couldn’t fault them at all. The rep was coordinating the entire process. The moving team arrived on time with his helpers. Nothing was damaged or dented, not even a spot on anything. They displayed the best use of skill and experience. I am recommending this company to everyone for all kind of moving services.

This is the 3rd time I have used Faithful Movers Company. Each time and each crew were ALL incredible! But I especially wanted to thank B.J., Greg and Charles who were exceptionally kind, considerate, hard-working, efficient, organized, and STRONG, in a long distance move for my elderly father to a new city. Their demeanor was such that it alleviated my dad's anxiety and allowed him to trust the movers with all of his belongings. I also want to thank Shawnetta, who was awesome at organizing my moving date, quote, and changes nearly to the dollar. She was available by email even during late hours and weekends and could not have been more professional and courteous. I was happy when she called me about having a place to leave a review for their work. Thank you Faithful Movers

I moved out of a townhouse and into a rental home. I started moving by myself, but needed help with some of the larger furniture on the second floor. I called early morning, sort of last minute, and they were able to come out that day and help me with the move. Extremely professional and efficient, and made the move so much less stressful for my wife and I. Awesome job and I will recommend to any of my friends or associates that will be moving.

When I realized I was terribly wrong in thinking I could get it done by myself I was in a panic. With one day until closing our house needed a complete inside cleaning. We posted a request for help at 10:30 in the evening and within five minutes Joey was on the phone. Joey sounded like a no nonsense guy. He assured us that he could clean our entire house in the time required. That was not an empty promise since our house was sparkling clean and smelling nice and fresh by the time Joey left. I can only thank my lucky stars that we found Joey in the last minute. Our inspection went through without a hitch and our buyer was very pleased. Even though Joey was very busy cleaning our house, He took time out several times to help me load some furniture items that I had a hard time with. I am very very pleased with Joey and his team's work and would hire him and recommend him to anybody. In fact he will be helping me unloading into my new house in a couple of days.

We needed a mover to load a pickup truck and 6x12 u-haul trailer for us from a second story apartment. I was sure it was going to be impossible for everything to fit. We had everything ready to be moved, because we were determined to only pay for the two hours and nothing more. Two guys showed up and I asked them if they just carried items out or if they were skilled at organizing the packing into the u-haul. They said they could handle it and they sure did!!!! They were amazing. They actually had everything out and down the stairs in about 45 minutes. They used the rest of the time to organize and secure the items properly. To my amazement, they performed miracles by fitting almost everything in for our long trip from NC to Texas. When I say almost everything, I am not exaggerating. We had a litter box and a small tube of Christmas ornaments that just could not fit. All in all, they moved and safely packed up over 3500 pounds of belongings!!!! (In well under the two hour required minimum!!). And were kind enough to take some of our frozen food that could not make the trip. I highly recommend them!!!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

    • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
    • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
    • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
    • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
    • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much should you tip furniture movers?

Moving furniture is hard work and potentially dangerous unless you’re properly equipped. For anyone not ready to handle their heavy oak armoire alone, professional furniture movers can safely and efficiently move your items to another room in your house or across town as needed. The national average cost to hire heavy furniture movers is $150-$200 per hour. This rate could include multiple furniture movers working as a team to move items such as beds, armoires, billiards tables, pianos, shelves, tables, entertainment centers and more. Hourly rates can vary by region. If your furniture movers have arrived on time, done a great job, kept your home and belongings protected from scratches and dings, and completed the move as planned, a tip will be greatly appreciated. Moving companies suggest approximately 10 percent of the total bill as gratuity for those doing local moving jobs, which is also a good guideline for tipping heavy furniture movers. If the total bill for heavy moving was $100 and two workers were onsite, consider giving them $10 total, or $5 each for a job well done.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.
