I am happy to provide a comment about working with career coach, Scott Albert. He coached me during a very difficult professional time in my career, providing guidance and insight on my ideals about myself as a professional. Scott used a career assessment consisting of probing questions related to my career goals as well as assisted with reformatting my resume. I am more confident about prospects for career-related opportunities. I do not find that there are areas in need of improvement.

I found Brooke while going through a challenging time in my life that resulted in symptoms of anxiety. I had never worked with a therapist before, so I was unsure what to expect going in. Brooke provided a comfortable atmosphere that gave me the space needed to grow and see my life in a new light. Her guidance and support has had a profound impact on my family's happiness. We are truly grateful for her help!

Working with Jenn has shown me what having an insightful and empathetic but objective sounding board and guide can do: it has given me more compassion for myself and others, a clearer understanding of who I am and what I'm doing, and the tools to make my life a better place to be. Her guidance is smart, practical, and actionable. And I'm so glad I found her :)

I first work with Sherman when at Celanese & had responsibility for an engineering group. We used Sherman to work with our high performing young engineers personal development. Each engineer had different needs. Sherman identified the need and developed a training program around those needs. On a weekly basis he reviewed with our staff the candidates process against a defined timeline. The results exceeded expectations. Later in my career, when at Wellman, we engaged Sherman for a similar assignment with the same positive results.

Katherine is an excellent life and business coach/mentor not just because she's good at what she does but because she genuinely cares and wants to see people succeed. Her encouragement and realness is what I admire most and I look forward to seeing her talent expand in her own career and in others esp mine.

Jessica does a fantastic job of helping those in need of assistance when it comes to career counseling. Whether guidance with job searches, or looking over a resume or giving advice on interviewing skills, she approaches each task with knowledge and professionalism that allows whoever she is working with to feel confident in their newly acquired skills. Thinking back over my experience with her I can honestly say that there is nothing I would improve, not to say she is perfect, but at least during our interaction she was exemplary.

It was very refreshing to have a space designated for talk about career projections and possibilities. I feel like I walked away with a manageable action plan after my time with Akpene. She asked good questions and got me to think in ways that I hadn't thought of yet. I'm super excited to see what comes of our plan!

She made me very at ease immediately. Very nice to talk to...good sense of humor. She doesn't hold back on bad news which is a good thing. Didn't tell me what I wanted to hear but had good things to say about the future. Looking to see if what she told me comes true......but a very nice and kind lady. If she's accurate I will definitely use her again.

Mrs. Goodfellow is passionate about helping others find a career that fits not only their skill sets, but also their passion. She is organized, proficient, and professional. She has a wealth of resources when it comes to assisting with job searches from resume and cover letter revising and/or writing, role playing interviewing techniques, to helping make industry contacts for the job of your dreams. I would highly recommend her for anyone looking at a career change or upgrade. I have also personally recommended her College Consulting services to friends with high school students. Mrs. Goodfellow has a vast wealth of knowledge when it comes to the college admission process (including scholarships, finding the right college for you and/or your child's needs, essay writing at it's finest, etc). I know, she will be my first call when my children hit that age!

Felicia and I met about 1 year ago. I was trying to make a decision on pursuing my dreams or stay within my current career. She allowed me to share the pros and cons if being an entrepreneur vs working for company. I did a visualization of how it would feel to actually wake up each morning and design my life. I wrote in my journal my ideal day from sun up to sun down, as well how it felt. I then did a vision board within my journal showing my ideal lifestyle. She truly opened my eyes up to the possibilities of what the Universe can bring into your life. I now have my own Health & Wellness business that is thriving, and I am so happy to wake up each morning feeling excited and renewedm Thank YOU, Felicia!

Valerie has helped me become more empowered and focused in my career development goals. She doesn’t provide me with answers and solutions, but rather she assisted me with crafting my own action steps to help unlock the solutions that lay dormant inside of me. She serves as a guide on my journey of self-actualization.

Switching career industries is never an easy task and getting your foot in the door is among the hardest things to accomplish. So reaching out to Constance was a no brainer when I began my search. After consulting with her regarding my ideal position, experience and education, she aptly began restructuring my resume and editing my cover letters. She delved into areas I considered menial and explained their value and why I should highlight these areas on my resume. Once my resume was complete, she then expanded my job search, careers I initially did not consider, were now exciting and attainable opportunities. After applying to positions selected from my curated job list, I was invited to interview with great prospective organizations. Although I did not switch industries (due to an amazing promotion with my current company) I have and will continue to recommend C4 services to anyone in need of career advice.

About

Example Of Recent Endorsement: As a mom, a wife and business owner, I am pulled in many different directions on a daily basis. I was helping my Clients, marketing my law firm, arranging my work schedule to be able to volunteer at my daughter's school and trying to be a good wife. I never put myself first in any day. If I did, I felt guilty that someone else was needing me and I was saying no to that person to say yes to myself. Andy helped me put my life into perspective. He really challenged me to come to terms with it being ok to still have a successful law firm, still be a great mom and wife, but still put me first and not feel wrong about doing that. Andy did not have an easy client admittedly. But he had the patience, compassion and understood why I felt that way. In the process, my Firm has become even more successful, yet I have been able to take more time for myself. I wholeheartedly recommend Andy and would encourage others to reach out to him as well

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a career coach?

If you’re interested in furthering your career and want expert help, a career coach is a smart solution. A career coach is a professional you hire to guide you during a job search or a career transition, or to help you improve and advance in your current position. A career coach analyzes your work situation and learns what your professional goals are. They then create a strategy to help you achieve your targets. Throughout the process they should provide objective feedback and guide you in approaching the process strategically. Here are some of the tools and tasks a career coach may assist you with:

  • Helping you build a strong resume that reflects your work history, potential, and skills
  • Coaching for interviews and strategies for solid answers built around your resume and the target job
  • Defining your career goals
  • Creating a plan for job searching
  • Improving networking strategies and skills
  • Developing strategies for negotiating raises or promotions
  • Assessing why you’re not getting where you want to go
  • Identifying new positions or career opportunities that fit your skills

What is a life coach?

A professional, accredited life coach works with people to help them make important changes in their life, either growing in their profession or changing gears in their personal lives. They help clients turn their dreams or wishes into realistic, attainable goals. They guide people through the process of making life changes by helping them evaluate the steps they must take to reach a particular goal, then help them decide how — and whether — to take those steps in the most efficient, effective and rewarding way possible. A life coach acts as a motivator, strategist and accountability partner. Unlike a therapist, a life coach doesn’t help solve problems from your past — they’re focused on helping you move forward with new ways of acting and thinking that will help you reach your goals. Some people specialize in particular types of life coaching, including life balancing coaches, small business coaches, executive coaches and personal finance coaches. Some meet clients in person, while others hold consultations over the phone.

Regardless of which type of life coach you’re interested in, make sure the person holds an International Coach Federation (ICF) credential. There are three tiers of credentials: Associate, Professional and Master, which require coaching experience ranging from 100 hours to 2,500 hours.

Why is career counseling important?

Career counseling can help you discover your career path, help you overcome challenges preventing you from finding happiness in your job, or help you learn more about career opportunities that are available to you. Career counselors are typically counselors who specialize in helping guide people into their best career choices. As professionals, they have typically completed a master’s degree in counseling with a focus on career counseling and bring a nuanced understanding of the emotional blocks that prevent someone from doing what they love or getting ahead in their current position. Here are some of the ways that career counseling can help:

  • Identify your skills and talents and how they correlate to different career paths
  • Educate you about the educational requirements for launching in various careers and what earnings can look like
  • Help you understand the kind of environment you want to work in, and which careers are best suited for that
  • See opportunities to transfer your existing skill set to other career areas
  • Help you identify causes of tension or unhappiness in your current career and how to overcome those difficulties
  • Help you create a game plan for moving forward
  • Provide a safe space for you to understand your feelings about career choices you’re making

How much does a life coach cost?

A life coach helps clients set and reach professional and personal goals, develop positive habits, and deal with stress. Some people meet with a life coach once or twice, while others form an ongoing professional relationship, meeting regularly in person or on the phone. The average national cost to meet with a life coach ranges from $80 to $130 an hour. Some coaches offer per-session pricing, especially for one-time meetings; expect to pay an average of $100-$125. People who want to work with a coach over a period of time to explore life transitions, career growth or lifestyle changes may be able to get discounted pricing in a package. For example, three 60-minute sessions cost an average of $300, four 60-minute sessions cost an average of $350, and four 60- to 90-minute sessions plus unlimited contact between sessions cost an average of $400. Some specific types of coaching, such as relationship or marriage coaching, cost more than standard life coaching. For instance, three 60-minute relationship coaching sessions cost an average of $500, four 60-minute sessions cost an average of $550, and six 60- to 90-minute sessions cost an average of $650 when purchased as a package. Training and experience can also affect the cost of hiring a life coach. An Associate Certified Coach, who holds a certification that requires only 60 hours of training and 100 hours of coaching experience, will charge less than a Master Certified Coach, who typically has at least 200 hours of training and 2,500 hours of coaching experience.

What is a career counselor?

If you’re feeling lost in your career path, overwhelmed, in need of a job but confused as where to start, or ready for change but uncertain what you want, a career counselor is a good choice for you. A career counselor is typically a licensed professional who has earned a master’s degree in counseling — likely with an emphasis on career counseling. Each state has different licensing requirements for career counselors, so be sure to research before reaching out to a pro.

Due to their academic backgrounds, career counselors often have a more holistic and in-depth approach than a career coach. Career coaches are not regulated by states and also tend to be more business-focused — a good fit for those who know what they want but need help achieving it. On the other hand, a career counselor provides guidance and clarity around some of the more emotional aspects that job hunting and career movement entail. Career counselors meet with you in a series of one-on-one sessions. They assess your personality and learn what drives you. They get a detailed understanding of your work history and your hopes, and often work to help you discover any internal blocks preventing you from going where you want to go. Hiring a career counselor is appropriate at any time in your career, from recent graduate to executive-level management.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
