My heating/cooling system had went out in my home. Was contacted by Paul here on Thumbtack after submitting a request for assistance. Paul came to my home on a Sunday and had my heat working within an hour of arriving. He throughly explained the issue and how we can make sure our system works properly. I would definitely recommend Air-O-Seasons to others.

Furnace was not operational. Two companies checked the system and stated I needed a new furnace quotes of $6500.00 to $7300.00. Mr. Lewis arrived inspected the furnace, ordered the part and fixed the furnace which did not cost $1000.00 in a timely manner. He was friendly, honest, and provided excellent customer service. I recommend this 5 star company to everyone you do not find businesses like this anymore. Thank you Priority Heating and Air. I will always use this company for all my heating and sir services and recommend them to my family and friends. Outstanding!

Our A/C unit froze up and we called a couple of local companies to take a look at it. They tried to sell us brand new units for heating and a/c. We were told it's best to replace the perfectly good heating unit since the a/c was out. We didn't like that response so I went to Thumbtack. John came out to give us a free assessment. He was on-time, professional and very knowledgeable. He said we could just replace the coil and did not need to purchase a whole new heating and air system. This was a Friday. He tracked down the part and was here Monday replacing the coil. We have had no issues since the repair and the house is nice and cool. John literally saved us thousands of dollars. Mully Talented will be our go to for all heating and air issues from now on.

Israel recently installed a new heating and air conditioning systems, as well as a humidifier in my home. His work was both professional and timely. He is a perfectionist and therefore I have experienced no problems with his work. He definitely goes beyond what is expected and even recommended a smaller less expensive unit as the larger one was not needed in my size home. I would definitely recommend him to anyone who is in need of his services. I have worked with other companies and find him superior as he actually has the customer's best interest at heart.

Wow! My renters called and told me that the air was not working. I called Steve Moore Heating and Air and he turned around in rush hour traffic on 485 to get them back up and cool. Then he went back the next day to check on it. Top notch service. They are now my go to company for heating and air.

Rapp's HVAC and plumbing installed 2 new furnaces, 2 HVACs, new plumbing and a tank less water system. You judge a successful business by your last happy customer. Well I'd say your business is successful because of the employees you put on the front line. Aaron Knight is extremely professional, honest, genuine and thorough. He demonstrates a work ethic above others and I've shown my appreciation by forwarding him at least 4 referrals already since our completed job which have turned into signed contracts. I can't say enough how appreciative we are of Rapp's employees and especially Aaron Knight. Thank you and I look forward to working and giving you referrals for years to come.

Josh Nowlin came to do a maintenance check on my A/C system. He explained his plan of action to examine the system. After his system check, he outlined what he needed to do that day to make the system ship-shape. After completing the A/C repairs, he explained there was one part that will need to be replaced next year, before the summer season, but that we could wait until next spring to do that repair. He gave me two alternate versions of the possible repair, so I could decide which would be cost-effective for my budget. He was helpful, honest, and I will definitely be calling him back for my heating system check in October, and again next spring to make the other A/C repair. I have complete confidence in Nowlin Enterprises. Cathy S.

Our air conditioner has never been able to keep us cool in the Carolina heat. Our electric bills have also run really high in the warmer months for years, and being from the northeast, we always just thought it was part of living in a warm climate. The Job-Squad came and did a spring maintenance and a few repairs to our unit and it has made a huge difference. Brad discovered a fan had been running non-stop, and corrected that problem, and our most recent electric bill was for $100 less than last year at this time! Most importantly - it is comfortable in our home! We are very happy with Brad. Next week - pressure washing!

I recently hired FSP Heating and Cooling to perform a heating tune-up on my furnace before the start of the winter season. I was very impressed that they arrived the same day I called. The service technician James was very courteous. He was knowledgeable and answered all my questions in a way that made it easy to understand. I was so impressed by his service that I signed a 1 year service agreement with FSP. I would highly recommend FSP to anyone with heating and cooling needs.

My AC unit broke down July 2011 and I started calling around to get someone out to service it. One of the first places I called was a place I had seen on TV, that always has a catchy jingle, and quickly found their prices to be unreachable. I called smaller well known places and found a little lower prices. Then I found ARIES HVAC on the internet and the price I was quoted for replacing my AC and furnace with a new Lennox system was about the same price as the others were quoting just to fix my old system. I scheduled them to come and replace it. They were there when they said they would be and were finished before the given timeframe. ARIES HVAC is a top notch company that goes above and beyond what you would expect from anyone. It is definitely worth the time to call.

When my air heating and air system went out I called these guys for an estimate. They came when they said they would on one of the hottest days of the year. They gave me the best estimate compared to the competitors. They put me on the schedule to completely replace my system in 4 days. As we were in the hottest days of the year, they brought me portable units to keep my family comfortable until they could perform the work. On the day of the install the first technician arrived at 8:15 am. Three additional men arrived within the next five minutes and began work. During the work, it was discovered that mold spores were found in the duct work. I gave permission to replace all of the duct work. This issue added much time to the installation but that didn't matter to these guys! They worked all day long in major heat outside and in the attic. One technician never left the attic for nearly 6 hours! They never took a break and only left for an approximate 30 minute lunch. They came back and got back to work. The last of the men left my house at 8:30 pm that night and I had a brand new furnace and air conditioner which I couldn't be happier with!!! These guys were AWESOME!!! I highly recommend them!!! They were polite, hard working and above all extremely professional in all they did!!! Many thanks to Jay Phillips (Owner), Brad Lanning (Service Manager) and the hardest working installers in any industry I've ever met, Mike, Hunter, Anthony and Matt!!!

        Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

        Who fixes furnaces?

If your furnace needs to be repaired, you’ll want to find a qualified heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) repair technician. Each state has its own licensing requirements; some require all HVAC technicians to have an HVAC license, while others only require someone operating an HVAC service and installation company with employees to hold a contractor’s license. For example, in Alabama, the Alabama Board of Heating Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Contractors regulates licensing, while in Kansas there is no state regulatory body and HVAC licensing can vary by region. For simple furnace repairs like changing out a filter, a trusted handyman can probably handle the job, but a trained professional should be hired for tasks like replacing a gas valve, installing a new inducer fan motor or other critical furnace repair jobs that involve dealing with gas leaks or other dangerous conditions. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much will it cost me to replace my furnace?

The national average for furnace replacement is between $1,800 and $2,500. The cost can range dramatically higher depending on the model of furnace you select, any repair work you require, your location and the cost of installation. Furnace installation costs can be more than the furnace itself due to the cost of doing business and the expertise needed to install the HVAC equipment. Installing a new furnace generally requires technical know-how and the proper tools and licensing. It’s best to hire a pro and budget for furnace installation rather than risk potentially unsafe DIY installation. This will ensure your home’s safety. Check to see if your HVAC contractor has the proper licensing to do the job. If you need duct repair or replacement, expect to pay more for your furnace installation costs. The price for duct repair could be an hourly rate ranging on average anywhere from $85 to $150 per hour, with additional costs for parts.

How much does it cost to replace a gas furnace?

The cost to replace your gas furnace will vary based on the type and size of furnace you select, labor and installation costs, and any repairs your HVAC system may need. Nationally, average HVAC prices for a heating specialist range between $1,800 and $2,500. It’s important to select the right size gas furnace for your heating needs. A furnace that’s too small won’t heat your house properly, while a furnace that’s too large will run inefficiently, cycling on and off and likely breaking down sooner. HVAC specialists calculate your exact heat needs by measuring your home and incorporating variables such as the regional climate and your home’s level of insulation. Retail pricing for gas furnaces can range from $650 up to $3,000 and more. The higher the AFUE (annual fuel utilization efficiency) rating of the furnace, the more efficient it is at turning fuel into heat and the lower your carbon footprint and utility bill will be. HVAC installation costs are often based on an hourly rate and can range from under $50 to over $100 per hour, depending on the company and the furnace being installed. Higher-end furnaces cost more to install because they require added labor and expertise. For a typical installation, it might take two HVAC installation pros one day or less to remove your old furnace and replace it with a new one.

How much does it cost to have your furnace cleaned?

To keep your furnace in good working order it’s important to have it regularly cleaned. The national average furnace cleaning cost ranges from $60 to $80, though prices can vary greatly based on where you live in the country and what your furnace maintenance includes. An HVAC company may have different rates for different levels of furnace maintenance. For example, one company may offer general furnace maintenance for $79 and advanced maintenance for $138. Another company may offer a 38-point maintenance check for $89 and a 64-point maintenance check for $178. According to Energy.gov, a standard furnace cleaning and maintenance visit can include:

        • Checking the vent connection pipe and chimney
        • Checking the physical integrity of the heat exchanger
        • Adjusting the controls to provide optimum air temperatures
        • Checking the combustion chamber for cracks
        • Testing for carbon monoxide (CO)
        • Adjusting the blower control and supply-air temperature
        • Cleaning and oiling the blower
        • Removing soot and corrosion from the furnace
        • Checking the fuel input and flame characteristics
        • Sealing the connections between the furnace and the main ducts

How much will it cost me to replace my air conditioner?

If your AC system is in need of replacement, the national average air conditioner installation costs range from $2,930 to $3,670. Costs can vary greatly depending on whether you are replacing a wall or window unit or a central air system. A central air system is connected to ductwork that runs throughout your house and pumps cooled air into your various rooms via vents and registers. A central air conditioning system is far more costly than wall or window units. Selecting a central AC system that has a high seasonal energy-efficiency ratio (SEER) will likely lower both your carbon footprint and your utility bill. The type of AC system you select, where you live in the country, and the regional costs of HVAC work, duct removal and replacement, and ductwork repairs that are needed are some of the main factors that affect the cost of new air conditioner installation. Here are some examples of average costs for installing forced-air systems.

        • Install Lennox 16 SEER single-stage AC unit: $5,743
          • Removing and disposing of the old furnace, moving and reconnecting the water heater, and installing a 3.5-ton gas furnace. The job took 18 hours of labor.
        • Installation of a new 14 SEER single-range cooling system: $4,000-$6,000
        • Installation of a new 16 SEER two-range cooling system: $6,000-$8,000
        • Installation of a new 20 SEER variable capacity cooling system: $8,000-$12,000
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
