"When I contacted you, you were Leila's my daughter's 3yr old Great Pyrenees/Boarder Collie rescue, last chance. Since moving from a home where she could go in & out on her own & had an invisible fence to a townhouse where she had to be walked on a leash, she had become aggressive to the other family pets, lunged at strange dogs to try to fight, chased skateboarders, bicycles, & motorcycles. My daughter was moving into an apartment that fall & planned to take her when going back to college. I felt Leila was at risk of hurting another animal or person & couldn't risk my daughter taking her unless she changed dramatically. From the very 1st day Karen met Leila, she became a different dog. She not only taught Leila how to be a dog but taught me how to be a proper owner. If Leila had an incident, it was always due to owner error (me). What a major difference you had on our family, working with Leila on triggers, helping her learn to be a dog, & training the owners how to be responsible owners! Leila had always been a loving dog & family member. However, now she was happy! Happy because she knew how to be a dog, how to greet strange dogs, & how to respond to commands. As soon as Karen entered the house, Leila would light up. She ran straight to her, sat in a beautifully attentive stance directly in front of Karen & looked up at her with pure love. Amazing! Additionallt, Karen also worked with my daughter & her boyfriend before the move. After Leila moved in with Audrey, Karen followed up with a comprehensive summary & guidelines for Audrey to ensure Leila didn't backtrack due to the move. Thanks to Karen, I was confident Leila would not hurt a human or pet & felt comfortable sending her off to college with my daughter. I'm happy to report both are doing wonderfully & she's the favorite dog in the complex. Thank you Karen. You saved our family pet & make a special dog & young lady very, very happy!"

10. Loving Petsitter Welcomes All

"Hey there! My name is Jenna and I live in uptown Charlotte, right next to the Frazier dog park. I moved here from Maryland about two years ago where I had to sadly leave my puppies at home with my parents. Since I don’t currently have any pets living with me in Charlotte quite yet, I love the company of a furry friend! Calling me an animal lover would be an understatement. I have owned pets my entire life and have been pet sitting all throughout high school and college. I have been volunteering at the humane society since I’ve moved to Charlotte and have even held an internship at a veterinarian’s office for a year! I am very active and enjoy long walks as well as trips to the park. I miss having animals around to play/go on walks with and would absolutely love the opportunity to care for your little loved ones while you are not able to. Featured on my profile are pictures of my apartment where pets will be able to roam and play freely as well as sleep at night. Note that they are allowed on furniture as to have a comfy place to sleep. Also on my profile are pictures of the dog park that is a five minute walk from my place. Any dogs I watch will be out playing for the majority of the day and only in my apartment when its time to settle down for the night. Another thing I would like to mention is that I live next to two close friends that own dogs and are always available for puppy play dates! Please don't hesitate to ask if you have any questions or concerns! What I enjoy most about pet sitting is the ability to be around animals, which has always been a passion of mine. It also gives me the opportunity to get outdoors and stay active!"

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much should you pay for a pet sitter?

Pet sitting provides your precious pet with in-home care. A pet-sitter can make a brief visit during the day to provide snacks, playtime or affection, or stay at your house for one or more nights to tend to your pet. Prices for pet-sitting will vary based on length of the visit. Nationally, pet sitting prices range from $20 to $30, although prices run higher for your sitter to stay the night. Prices will also be affected by where you live in the country. Here are some examples of average pet-sitting prices based on length of time and region:

  • 30-minute visit: $17 in a small Texas town.
  • 30-minute visit: $25 in Southern California.
    • 45-minute visit: $28.
    • 60-minute visit: $32.
  • Overnight stay (10 hours): $50 in Texas.
  • Overnight stay (10 hours): $85 in Southern California.
    • 12 hours: $100.
    • 24 hours: $200. This is a good option for a sick, elderly or brand-new pet that needs constant supervision.

How much does it cost to hire a house sitter?

House-sitting can be a lifesaver when you’re leaving town for any length of time. Whether you work remotely, you’re taking a much-needed vacation, or you just want to road-trip for a few days, it’s wise to have a pro keep an eye on your house and pets while you’re gone. Your home is more likely to stay safe and you won’t have to wrangle the kitty into a kennel to travel with you. The national average pet-sitting price ranges between $20 and $30. Pet-sitting and house-sitting costs will vary based on where you live in the country and regional labor rates. Another factor in cost is how long you want the house-sitter to stay. Some people prefer to have the house-sitter stay the night at their house, perhaps to care for an elderly pet or simply to keep a watchful eye on the home at all times. Overnight stays will cost more, ranging anywhere from $50 to $100, depending on services provided. For day visits, house-sitting and pet-sitting prices will increase incrementally the longer the visit and the more service you want performed. For example, a quick 10-minute visit to feed and walk the pet and bring in the mail could be $12.50, a 25-minute visit could be $18, a 40-minute visit $25, and a 50-minute visit $32.
