Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Can I use digital payments to pay for moving services?

Most local moving companies are likely to accept some form of digital payment. Particularly with the COVID-19 pandemic, more companies are likely to conduct transactions through platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Square Cash, Venmo, Google Pay and more.

To ensure the mover accepts a platform you can use, you can peruse the mover’s online profile and see what is listed there. You can also ask the mover about payment policies during a consultation call.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic?

If you’re trying to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic, make sure to use digital tools to avoid exposure. When searching for movers online, ask if they’d be willing to do a video chat to assess the size of your move. This will be in place of the typical “walk-through” they perform, and they may be able to give you a price quote. You can also discuss safe strategies for completing the job during your call or video chat.

How can I find out if a mover is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Your local city or state’s government website is a great resource if you’re trying to figure out whether a mover is considered an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic.

For a source of national guidelines, visit the CISA website’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. On this page, you’ll find 16 categories of critical infrastructure sectors. But note that some -- not all --  jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Do movers offer remote or virtual services?

Movers generally need to be present to do their job. But if you come across a mover’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, you can contact them to see what those services include.

Does a mover need to enter my home?

A mover will likely need to enter your home -- unless you’ve placed all of your belongings outside beforehand. To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, you might to consider keeping all (or most) of the work outside and/or having at-risk individuals leave the house while the movers work.

You can minimize exposure by doing a preliminary walk-through by video call instead of in person. Discuss your options with the top movers near you before hiring one.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a mover when social distancing?

If you decide to hire a mover, consider making adjustments to accommodate current guidelines. This may involve staying outside while the mover works inside your home or letting the mover handle only parts of the move.

It’s important to follow social distancing guidelines while performing any service work. For example, do not make physical contact with the movers, maintain at least 6 feet of distance between you at all times, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

What is considered a local move vs. a long-distance move?

Local moves are among the most common moves. Unlike a long-distance move, a local move is typically less than 50 miles and does not cross state lines. Generally, a local move only takes one day, and movers tend to charge by the hour.

The definition of a long-distance move may vary depending on the moving company. Generally, a long-distance considered to be any move of 400 miles or more. However, some say a long-distance move is over 50-100 miles.

Local Move

A move under 50 miles

Long-Distance Move

A move over 50-100 miles or over 400 miles; may also be called an “interstate move” or “out-of-state move”

Out-of-State Move

A move that crosses state lines; may also be called an “interstate move” or “long-distance move”

Interstate Move

A move that crosses state lines; may also be called an “out-of-state move” or “long-distance move”

Intrastate Move

A move that begins and ends in the same state, typically beyond 50 miles

Interstate moves require additional legal preparation and will incur additional costs for distance, the amount and weight of your items, the preparation required and various other factors. Moving companies tend to do an initial weighing of the truck, which you should be present for.

A move that crosses state lines is considered an interstate move or an out-of-state move. Contrast this with an intrastate move, which begins and ends in the same state, but is typically above 50 miles.

To determine whether your move is local or long-distance, contact the best movers in your area.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

Can you move furniture by yourself?

You might be able to move smaller items like nightstands, small desks, chairs and small tables by yourself. However, it’s best to get a professional mover near you to move larger items such as couches, dressers, armoires and televisions.

If you do decide to move furniture by yourself, carefully lift and lower items and take your time.

How much does it cost to move a couch?

It costs around $290, on average, to move a couch. However, your actual cost will depend on a variety of factors. Couch movers will often quote the job based on the size of the couch, as well as how far it has to travel. A larger couch, such as a sectional, will likely cost more money to move.

On the other hand, smaller couches typically cost less, as there are fewer sections and fewer people are required to move it. Some couches may be very delicate due to their age, or they may have certain decorative details that complicate the moving process. These may cost more as well.

Earl and team did a great job with our piano move along with moving some extremely heavy furniture within the home. They were very polite and friendly, working carefully so as to not cause any damage to furniture or the home. Arrived slightly early due to light traffic, worked extremely hard, and very reasonably priced (especially when compared to other top name movers)! I would highly recommend The Strategic Movers and will be using them again for any future moves.

The mover knew where the job was and also that it only involved the move of one item when the job was accepted. I asked for a cost estimate and was told $84 per hour.At the very last minute I was told that there was a two hour minimum, moving one refrigerator suddenly became very expensive. Then the moving truck would not start and they could not come. After a heated discussion, the next day the mover rented another truck and came to do the job. Over all, not the best experience, but the workmen who came were very nice and pleasant. A day late and twice the expected charge, but the job is done.

The Just Junk It team was so personable while maintaining timeliness and effectiveness at an affordable price! It almost felt like I hired some friends or family to help me move which is a great feeling when surrounded by the stress of moving. Everyone I called that day was impressed at how quickly I was moved in and the extend that the movers went to in order to make sure I felt comfortable. Not only did they move my things but they put together beds, and lended a helping hand any way they could. I would give them a 10 out of 5 star rating if I could!!! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The guys showed up on time and were very professional. They moved our pool table and relocated it to our new home where they reassembled it. The price they quoted is what I paid and they did a great job. No damage was done which is hard to do when moving things. I was very satisfied.

Winston and his partner are extremely professional, courteous, and efficient as well. They have all the equipment you would expect from a high quality professional mover without the heavy sticker shock. I was pleasantly surprised and relieved that there is none of the other price gotchas movers have tried to sneak and charge in the past. If you want you furniture protected and treated like it was their own, and moved with care, then treat yourself and hire these gentlemen. I'm telling you from experience you won't regret it and will never try and do the heavy lifting yourself anymore. Save your back and your wallet and give them a try.

I messaged these guys 3 hours before I needed them and they showed up as expected. They unloaded my 20 foot truck in an hour, and it was loaded with a lot of stuff. The 2 guys were cool and friendly. The price was real good for a last minute move and the time it took them! Would definitely recommend them!

It took them 5.25 hours to move approximately 30 items 13 miles with three workers. They insisted that it was their policy to send 3 workers to any house with a second story, and I paid to watch the third worker sit outside in the truck for an hour while the other two fumbled around trying to figure out how to move my clothes washer. I had already broken down all of the items in order to help aid the process, but that didn't make a difference to them because they were working by the hour. On top of this, they damaged 4 pieces of furniture due to negligence, like using an unpadded hand truck on finished wood surfaces. I specifically asked for our china cabinet to be handled gently, but they even managed to damage that because they never secured the doors on the front. Don't believe them when they say they wrap your stuff for you. What that really means is that they put your stuff in the truck and then throw a blanket over it. Nothing is secure. It took them half an hour just to park the truck in front of my house as if it were a scene out of the keystone cops. As bad as it was watching them try to park a truck, the fact that it took them almost two hours to move my washer and dryer down a set of stairs and up another, was a new type of painful. When I asked if they brought a harness, they insisted that they wouldn't use it because they would rather try to manhandle the items. In the end, they moved the washer and dryer, but destroyed the paint in both stair wells in the process. As disgusted as I was about the entire experience, when I called, the owner, Amy, returned my call personally and ensured me that they would address my concerns. Their way of addressing my concerns was to send someone out with a paint marker to try to refinish my furniture. Needless to say, it still looks like crap. Oh, and they missed the original appointment time for the repairs, and showed up 30 minutes late on the day they finally did show up. At that point, the owner tried to pawn me off on someone else rather than dealing with me. I somehow feel like I would have gotten a more appropriate response had I withheld payment until my concerns were resolved. So, all in all, expect to pay them twice what your move should take, and if you have anything you really like, just move it yourself. It's a lot easier in the long run.

Tyree was excellent and I would hire him and his team again. They showed up on time and it was obvious that they had plenty of experience loading / packing a truck. They packed our 26' U-Haul perfectly and there was no shifting in the load. Very pleasant and "Hard Working". Tyree and team made the move so much easier. I "Highly Recommend" Tyree.
